This continuous length of extruded polyolefin foam features a non-absorbent outer skin and a resilient interior, ensuring it easily conforms to joint irregularities while remaining non-gassing if damaged. The Sof® Rod is suitable for a wide temperature range, from -45° to 160°F (-43° to 71°C), making it versatile for various applications. Ideal for expansion and contraction joint applications, the SR58B delivers superior performance in EIFS, glazing, curtainwalls, and parking decks. It effectively fills joint dimensions comparable to Closed Cell Backer Rod. Proper installation is crucial; ensure the joint is clean and moisture-free, and use a Sof® Rod with a diameter approximately 25% larger than the joint. For smooth installation, consider using the CRL Cat. No. T607CU605 Backer Rod Insert Tool Set or Cat. No. SBRR Backer Rod Roller. While the Sof® Rod may come in varying shades of gray, its performance remains consistent. Note that it is not recommended for use with hot-applied sealants or adhesives exceeding 160°F (71°C).

CRL Sof® Rod is an advanced sealant backing material that combines the features of open and closed cell backer rods in a single, high-performance product. This dual celled product will not out-gas when the skin is ruptured and prevent sealant bubbling and failure. It consists of a continuous length of extruded polyolefin foam with a non-absorbent outer skin and a resilient internal structure of both open and closed cells. CRL Sof® Rod is chemically inert and compatible with virtually all known cold-applied sealants, including self-leveling types.
CRL Sof® Rod is available for purchase in the following diameters – 3/8" to 2" (10 to 51 mm).

Application:
Backer Rod is commonly used for glazing, curtain wall construction partitions, parking decks, bridge construction, modular home gasketing, and log home chinking.
Size Selection:
When choosing a CRL Sof® Rod, it is important for proper size selection as it controls the depth of the sealant bead and acts as a bond breaker to prevent back-side adhesion. It must be oversized approximately 25-50% wider than the joint to ensure a tight fit.
Storage:
Store in a well-ventilated are. Do not store products in direct sunlight. Keep away from heat sources and open flames.
Joint Preparation:
- New Joints: Clean thoroughly to remove form-release agents, curing compounds, or debris. Ensure the joint is clean and dry before applying sealant.
- Repairing Old Joints: Remove all old sealant or filler. Use wire brushing and air blasting for effective cleaning. If using an air compressor, ensure it has moisture and oil traps.
Installation Instructions:
- Prepare the surface by following the Joint Preparation directions.
- Measure and Select: Choose the correct backer rod size based on the joint width.
- Set Depth: Install the backer rod at the depth recommended by the sealant manufacturer, ensuring the sealant forms an "hourglass" shape.
- Use the Right Tools: Install with a blunt tool or roller. The Cat. No. T607CU605 or Cat. No. SBRR for smooth installation.

Product Warning:
Do not tear, puncture, crease, over-compress, or stretch the Backer Rod during installation. Always select the correct size for the joint. Do not use with hot-pour sealants or hot melt adhesives where surface temperatures exceed 160°F (71°C).
