With the ability to withstand temperatures ranging from -45° to 160°F (-43° to 71°C), Sof® Rod excels in expansion and contraction joint applications such as EIFS, glazing, curtain walls, and parking decks. Its compatibility with virtually all cold-applied sealants, including self-leveling varieties like CRL Vulkem 45 SSL and CRL Tremco® THC900, makes it a versatile choice for professionals. Installation is straightforward: the joint must be clean and moisture-free, and Sof® Rod should be selected in a diameter approximately 25% larger than the joint. For optimal results, use a blunt tool or roller, utilizing the Cat. No. T607CU605 Backer Rod Insert Tool Set or Cat. No. SBRR Backer Rod Roller for smooth application. Available in various shades of black, the product maintains consistent performance regardless of color.

CRL Sof® Rod is an advanced sealant backing material that combines the features of open and closed cell backer rods in a single, high-performance product. This dual celled product will not out-gas when the skin is ruptured and prevent sealant bubbling and failure. It consists of a continuous length of extruded polyolefin foam with a non-absorbent outer skin and a resilient internal structure of both open and closed cells. CRL Sof® Rod is chemically inert and compatible with virtually all known cold-applied sealants, including self-leveling types.
CRL Sof® Rod is available for purchase in the following diameters – 3/8" to 2" (10 to 51 mm).

Application:
Backer Rod is commonly used for glazing, curtain wall construction partitions, parking decks, bridge construction, modular home gasketing, and log home chinking.
Size Selection:
When choosing a CRL Sof® Rod, it is important for proper size selection as it controls the depth of the sealant bead and acts as a bond breaker to prevent back-side adhesion. It must be oversized approximately 25-50% wider than the joint to ensure a tight fit.
Storage:
Store in a well-ventilated are. Do not store products in direct sunlight. Keep away from heat sources and open flames.
Joint Preparation:
- New Joints: Clean thoroughly to remove form-release agents, curing compounds, or debris. Ensure the joint is clean and dry before applying sealant.
- Repairing Old Joints: Remove all old sealant or filler. Use wire brushing and air blasting for effective cleaning. If using an air compressor, ensure it has moisture and oil traps.
Installation Instructions:
- Prepare the surface by following the Joint Preparation directions.
- Measure and Select: Choose the correct backer rod size based on the joint width.
- Set Depth: Install the backer rod at the depth recommended by the sealant manufacturer, ensuring the sealant forms an "hourglass" shape.
- Use the Right Tools: Install with a blunt tool or roller. The Cat. No. T607CU605 or Cat. No. SBRR for smooth installation.
THE PRODUCT CAN COME IN DIFFERENT SHADES / TONES, BUT THIS WILL NOT AFFECT THE OVERALL PERFORMANCE OF THE PRODUCT.
Product Warning:
Do not tear, puncture, crease, over-compress, or stretch the Backer Rod during installation. Always select the correct size for the joint. Do not use with hot-pour sealants or hot melt adhesives where surface temperatures exceed 160°F (71°C).
