John Wright's installation guides and videos

John Wright's Installation Guides and Videos page links two guides:

• Shutter Hardware Installation Details (4 pages): strap, New York, Acme, Lull & Porter, Clark's Tip and Bermuda hinges, offset and throw, lag mounting, shutter dogs and their lag, post and sill mounts, slide bolts, pull rings, the 88-303 fastener and faux hardware. The contents page of John Wright's Hardware Catalog (Catalog Version 19) lists the same title on pages 17-20.
• Selecting Hinges for Functional Shutters (2 pages, undated): planning questions (siding, molding around the window, where the shutter closes, where the pintle goes, the distance from the outside edge of the trim board to the face of the sash, shutter thickness) and a request for close-up photos and a dimensioned sketch.

The same page links a Shutter Installation Worksheet, an online form asking who will install, the shutter length, height and thickness, the hinge style (strap or New York), operating or always open, recessed or flush closing, measurements at the pintle location and the mounting material (brick, wood, stucco, stone or wood trim). Five videos follow: Planning for Installation of Functional Shutters, Selecting Shutter Hardware, Shutter Hinge Installation, Shutter Hinge Accessories and Custom Hardware.

Throw, screws and finish in John Wright's documents

Use one document at a time; they do not always agree. What we found:

• Acme, Lull & Porter #00 (88-378) throw: 6-1/4 inches in Catalog Version 19 (page 6); 6 on the 2023 sheet Acme, Lull & Porter Shutter Hinges 88-372 to 378PCR, which John Wright links from its 088372PC page.
• Screws for those hinges: the 2023 sheet, titled with the PCR numbers that Catalog Version 19 lists as retail packs, reads "Sets of 2 left- and 2 right-hand hinges, shutter fasteners, and all mounting hardware". Our 088372PC page reads "Screws not included but available separately", and our 088372PCR retail pack page reads "Retail packed as one set with matching black zinc screws".
• New York Hinge Style 1 and 2 (88-510, 88-512): the sheets John Wright links today list 28 No. 8 by 1 inch Phillips-head screws.
• Thumb Latch 88-495: John Wright's cut sheet says "Screws for mounting are included" and prints "Finish: raw cast iron with lacquer. Can be painted or used raw. Not recommended for outdoor installation." The 2023 sheet for the Gate Thumb Latch 88-496 lists "Works with gates/doors from 1.25 to 2.5 inches thick" and "Finish: Black-matte TGIC powder coating".

From our item number to John Wright's sheet

1. Take the number from our product title, such as 088510. John Wright's product page shows "Item Number: 088510".
2. On jwright.com, find the product (shutter items are in the Shutter Hardware menu) and check that the Item Number matches.
3. Open the Product Documentation tab. For 088510 it links the NY Hinge Style 1 sheet.

Which products have a John Wright sheet

We opened 25 John Wright product pages on jwright.com. Twenty-one had a Product Documentation tab: hinges (New York, mid range, Acme, Lull & Porter, Clark's Tip, Bermuda, strap, mini strap), scroll and faux shutter dogs, two slide bolts, a pull ring, a bullet catch, shutter fasteners, the magnetic dog holder, the window stop and both thumb latches. Four had none: the forged Charleston (088266) and Georgetown (088267) dogs, Beacon Hill (088269) and JP Style No. 30-L (088261). For the forged dogs, the Installation Details guide names the sill mount for #88-265 through -268. For Beacon Hill and JP Style No. 30-L we found no item sheet, only the guide's general Shutter Dogs section. We did not check every item.
