ASI Stainless Steel Framed Mirrors: Inter-Lok vs Chan-Lok, Sizes and Glass

ASI (American Specialties, Inc.) framed washroom mirrors are ordered by a series number followed by a size code, for example 0600-2436. This page compares the Inter-Lok angle frame and the Chan-Lok channel frame and explains the numbers, standard sizes, glass and mounting parts from ASI's technical data sheets and product pages.

Inter-Lok vs Chan-Lok frame

The 0600 data sheet (revision R4) calls the Inter-Lok a "Roll formed, interlocking frame" with heliarc welded corners, made from a 3/4 x 5/8 inch angle of 18 gauge type 304 stainless steel. The sheet adds: "Mirror is installed on a concealed hanging bracket that locks onto top and bottom of frame by tamper-proof set screws."

The 0620 data sheet (revision R5) describes the Chan-Lok as a 20 gauge type 304 stainless steel channel that "is a one-piece roll formed member that encases mirror and backing revealing a tight mitered corner."

How to read an ASI mirror number

  • The size follows the series number. In the ASI size lists the first two digits are the width and the last two the height, in inches: 0600-2436 is 24 inches wide x 36 inches high, 0620-3624 is 36 wide x 24 high.
  • A letter in front of the size marks a glazing other than plate glass: B for tempered glass (0600-B2430) and C for stainless steel with a #8 mirror finish (0600-C1824).
  • The 0600-41 series is ASI's matte black Inter-Lok mirror; its numbers end in -41, for example 0600-2436-41. ASI describes its Matte Black Collection as powder coated.
  • In 0600-T the T belongs to the series name, for example 0600-T2436.

Standard sizes and custom sizes

Plate glass sizes listed on the 0600 and 0620 data sheets, in inches:

For tempered glass (B) the 0600 sheet lists 8 sizes and the 0620 sheet 3; for #8 stainless steel (C) each sheet lists 6. ASI's Mirror Size Options chart adds: "Custom sizes available upon request." The chart and the data sheets do not match row for row, so check the sheet for your series. Our catalog also lists sizes outside these lists, such as 0600-12026 (120 inches wide x 26 inches high).

Glass, backing and glazing options

According to the framed mirror data sheets, the standard glazing is #1 quality 1/4 inch plate/float glass, silver coated and hermetically sealed with a uniform coating of electrolytic copper plating. They also list a 1/8 inch filler or cushion layer of expanded polyethylene microcell foam. The 0600 drawing shows a corrosion protected 20 gauge steel back, and the sheet says the back plate "is one piece, attached to frame with theft-resistant locking device."

ASI's Mirror Glazing Options sheet says the B, C, D, E and L types are "particularly suited to applications where frequent breakage and/or security problems exist." The data sheets also warn: "The reflective quality of tempered glass, metal mirrors, and plexiglass is not as true as plate glass." and "As the reflective surface size increases, regardless of glazing type, the likelihood of distortion also increases."

Tilt mirrors, mirrors with shelf and frameless

  • 0535 fixed tilt: the 0535 data sheet says it "Offers visibility for wheelchair patients". The frame is 20 gauge stainless steel and the mirror tapers from 4 inches at the top to 1 inch at the bottom.
  • 0537 fixed tilt with shelf: the same tapered design with a shelf 6 inches deep from the wall.
  • 0600-T adjustable tilt: the 0600-T data sheet says it is "Designed to provide easy visibility for wheelchair patients or return to upright position." It tilts a full 6 inches on a full width stainless steel piano hinge at the bottom.
  • 0605 and 0625: an 18 gauge stainless steel shelf welded to the face frame; the 0605 sheet gives the shelf as 5 inches wide, the 0625 sheet as 5 inches deep.
  • 8026 frameless: 20 gauge type 304 stainless steel polished to a #8 mirror finish with a 5/16 inch return, a 1/4 inch concealed tempered Masonite backing and 4 mounting holes.

Mounting parts on the data sheets

  • 0600 and 0605: wall screws (#10 self-threading) are "by others"; the 0600 drawing calls out 10-32 x 1-1/4 inch tamper-proof mounting and locking screws.
  • 0620 and 0625: wall screws (#8 or #10 pan head) are by others; the #6-32 locking screw comes "supplied separately taped to mirror back".
  • 0600-T: #8-32 machine screws for the side brackets are supplied; screws for the piano hinge are by others.
  • 0535 and 0537: keyhole slots in the back hang on four #10 pan head screws (by others); locking tabs lock the mounting flanges onto the screws.

Follow the installation section and drawing on the sheet for your series. The installation section also includes an ASI accessibility note; check it against the code that applies to your project. Data sheets: 0600 Inter-Lok (PDF) and 0620 Chan-Lok (PDF).
