Replacing a Better Home Products (BHP) deadbolt is easiest when the new one matches the door preparation and the way the old one works. This page lists what to read off the old deadbolt and the door before you order, as BHP's own specification sheets and installation guides print it, and explains prefixes in BHP numbers such as UL17688CH or ULSK10688CH.
BHP deadbolt parts: are the latch and strike sold separately?
We do not list BHP deadbolt latches, strikes or cylinders as separate items. The BHP deadbolts we carry are complete deadbolts, and BHP's product pages for its non-electronic deadbolts state that the adjustable latch and all standard installation parts are included. This page is therefore about choosing a complete replacement deadbolt. Nothing here means that a BHP part fits another maker's lock, or the other way around.
1. Single cylinder, double cylinder or keyless
Start with the inside of the door. BHP's specification sheets describe three functions:
- Single cylinder (for example 10611DB): locked or unlocked by key outside or by the turn-piece inside. The sheets add "Inside always free".
- Double cylinder (for example 10711DB): locked or unlocked by key outside or inside.
- Keyless (for example UL10811DB): locked or unlocked by the turn-piece inside. BHP calls it a one-side deadbolt.
In the chrome deadbolt sheet, for example, 10688CH is the single cylinder, 10788CH the double cylinder and 10888CH the keyless model. General differences between the types are in our deadbolt types guide.
2. Backset, bore and door thickness
BHP's deadbolt installation guide (Manual 04) defines the term: "The backset is the distance from the door edge to the center of the hole". Measure it on your door. The BHP guide listed as Manual 01 (Commercial Deadbolt) also notes that the backset on the door face must be the same as the backset of the lock. Except on the electronic sheets, the latch is listed as adjustable for a 2-3/8 or 2-3/4 inch backset.
Apart from the electronic models, the keyed deadbolts list a 2-1/8 inch crossbore and a 1 inch edge bore. The keyless models list a 2-1/8 inch half-bore, printed on the low-profile sheet as a one side bore. Door thickness and face bore as printed, in inches:
| BHP deadbolt | Door thickness | Face bore |
|---|---|---|
| Keyed: standard, UL, SK, TIB, M | 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 | 2-1/8 cross bore |
| Keyless, e.g. UL10811DB | 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 | 2-1/8, one side |
| Grade II, e.g. 30611DB | 1-3/8 to 2 | 2-1/8 cross bore |
| Electronic (EL) | 1-3/8 to 2 | not on sheet |
3. Latch, faceplate and strike
Every sheet except the electronic ones lists a 1 inch throw. Apart from the Commercial Grade II sheet, they also list a radius corner faceplate as standard; where the latch face size is printed, it is 1 x 2-1/4 inches. The strike is listed as packed with one 1 x 2-1/4 inch radius corner strike and one full lip radius corner strike (the 2003 UL sheet lists one radius corner strike plate).
The Commercial Grade II sheet (30688CH, 30615SN, 30611DB, 30644BLK) is different: a 1-1/8 inch wide square corner faceplate, a 1-1/8 x 2-3/4 inch square corner strike, a radius corner wooden frame reinforcing strike, two 3 inch screws and a dust box. Note the width of your old faceplate and whether its corners are square or rounded before you order.
Handing: the standard deadbolt sheets print Non-handed (for example for 10611DB, 10711DB and 10811DB); the electronic deadbolt sheets list auto door handing detection.
If the failed latch belongs to a BHP knob or lever set, check that set's sheet instead; the Soma and Dillon Beach lever sheets, for example, list a 1/2 inch throw.
4. Keyway and keys as printed
- Standard single and double cylinder deadbolts, with or without the UL prefix: a 5 pin cylinder in the Kwikset KW1 keyway.
- Low-profile (SK, TIB) and modern (M) deadbolts: 5 pin KW1 keyway; the sheets add "Other options available".
- Electronic deadbolts (EL): 5 pin KW keyway, with password and smartphone app entry besides the mechanical key.
- Commercial Grade II (for example 30611DB): 6 pin Schlage C keyway.
The sheets do not describe keyed alike or master keyed options. If several doors must open with one key, call us before you order.
5. UL, SK, TIB and other prefixes in BHP numbers
BHP's catalog and sheets do not explain the letters. Next to the numbers they print:
| Prefix | BHP's description |
|---|---|
| UL | On BHP's UL Listed sheets (see below) |
| SK | Low-profile round deadbolt (Skyline Blvd) |
| TIB | Low-profile square deadbolt (Tiburon) |
| M10 / M20 | Modern round / modern square deadbolt |
| EL | Electronic deadbolt |
| 30 (deadbolts) | Commercial Grade II single cylinder |
BHP's 2026 catalog prints the UL number next to the same number without UL, for example 17688CH and UL17688CH, or SK10688CH and ULSK10688CH. The finish is printed with the number, for example UL17688CH Chrome, ULSK10615SN Satin Nickel, UL10611DB Dark Bronze, UL10644BLK Matte Black and SK10604SB Satin Brass. DC also appears: a 2003 BHP UL sheet calls UL10626DC Dull Chrome, the 2023 sheet Satin Nickel.
6. UL listing and fire rating: read the sheet for your number
The UL prefix alone does not tell you the rating. As printed on BHP's specification sheets (checked October 2026):
- UL10611DB, UL10626DC, UL10644BLK and UL17688CH (UL Listed deadbolt sheet, file dated 08-2023): "UL Approved 3-hour fire rating".
- UL10811DB, UL10815SN, UL10844BLK and UL10888CH (UL Listed keyless deadbolt sheet): "UL Approved 3-hour fire rating".
- ULSK and ULTIB low-profile models (Low-Profile Deadbolt Specifications, revision R3): "90 Minute Fire Rating".
- 30688CH, 30615SN, 30611DB and 30644BLK (Commercial Grade II sheet, no UL prefix): "UL listed. 3 hour fire rating".
An earlier revision of the low-profile sheet prints a different rating, so go by the current sheet. Grades as printed: Grade III on the standard, UL Listed and UL keyless sheets, Grade II on the Commercial Grade II sheet. If the deadbolt goes on a fire-rated door, confirm the listing with BHP and your local code official before you order.

BHP publishes installation guides on its website, with separate guides for deadbolts, commercial deadbolts, keyless and keypad deadbolts. Follow the guide for your model.
