BHP Installation Instructions and Templates: Levers, Knobs, Handlesets, Deadbolts

If you are installing a BHP lever, knob, handleset or deadbolt, the first job is finding the right document. Better Home Products (BHP) publishes its lockset installation instructions as numbered PDF manuals and its door prep data on specification sheets. Below we show what each document contains and how to get from the item number in our product title to the right file.

Where BHP keeps its installation instructions

From our product title to the BHP document

In our product titles the BHP item number follows the brand, as in BHP SK10615SN. On the four BHP product pages we checked (Twin Peaks passage lever, Tiburon handleset, round low profile deadbolt, electronic deadbolt), each page shows an Item# with two links: Specifications opens a specification sheet, Installation Guides opens the general list. The page for SK10615SN links the Low-Profile Deadbolt Specifications sheet, which lists SK10615SN. Pick the manual from the list by product type.

Manuals 07 and 14 are both headed Instruction for Installing Lockset, with the same five steps: mark door, drill two holes, install strike on door jamb, install outside knob (or lever), install inside assembly. They differ in the adjustment panel. Manual 07 (marked H001-002) says to slide the spindle cam to the 2-3/4 inch markings, and Manual 14 (marked H001-001) says to pull the rear part of the latch out or in. The BHP pages we checked do not say which collection has a half-moon or a square spindle, so ask BHP if unsure.

Manual 03 is headed Installation Instructions Commercial Key-in-Lever, for doors 1-3/8 to 2 inches thick. For a replacement installation it lists steps 3C, 4C and 5 to 9. The West Portal and Park Presidio Commercial Grade II lever sheets (Dark Bronze) list the same door thickness for their passage, privacy and keyed sets and a 5/16 inch thru-bolt.

BHP deadbolt installation instructions

  • Manual 04, listed for deadbolts other than keyless, electronic and commercial: single and double cylinder deadlocks, doors 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inches. It has six steps, a double cylinder panel and a fold-over template, plus a Selecting the Proper Backset page (marked H001-003).
  • Manual 01, listed as Commercial Deadbolt: single or double cylinder deadbolts, doors 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inches; six steps and a fold-over template. BHP's Commercial Grade II Single Cylinder Deadbolt sheet (30688CH, 30615SN, 30611DB, 30644BLK) lists 1-3/8 to 2 inch doors, so for a door over 1-3/4 inches ask BHP which instructions apply.
  • Manual 10, Keyless Deadbolt: one-sided (keyless) deadbolt, doors 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inches; five steps and a template drawn for a 2 inch hole. BHP's UL Keyless Deadbolts sheet lists a 2-1/8 inch half-bore, so confirm the hole size with BHP.
  • Manual 11, Keypad Deadbolt: a user manual with a template, installation steps 1 to 9, programming and troubleshooting. It says up to 6 user codes can be saved. The Smartphone Operable Electronic Deadbolt sheet (EL20688CH, EL20615SN, EL20611DB, EL20644BLK) lists up to 30, so ask BHP which manual fits your model.

BHP door handle sets: handleset door prep and videos

The Installation Guides list has no handleset manual. Instructional Videos lists How to Install a Thick-Kit and How to Install a Handleset and Trim. The Product Specifications page lists six handleset sheets, including these four:

Each entry has a dimension drawing, door prep, thickness, function, strikes, latches and handing. On the Tiburon, Fisherman's Wharf and Skyline Boulevard sheet the door prep is a 2-1/8 inch cross bore, 1 inch edge bore, 1 x 2-1/4 inch latch face and 3/8 inch bottom bolt hole, for doors 1-5/8 to 2 inches thick (up to 2-1/4 inches with the optional BHP thick door kit). That sheet lists Chrome, Satin Nickel and Dark Bronze item numbers only. The Pacific Heights, Twin Peaks and Nob Hill sheets list handleset trim items (18911DB, 75911DB, 69911DB) whose door prep reads See BHP handleset door prep.

Interconnected and pocket door locks

Manual 09 (interconnected locks, marked IL-2) has seven steps and no printed template. Manual 13 (round pocket door lock, marked H001-004) has a template and a strike template. Manual 15 is headed Combination Sliding Doorpull and Lock.

The BHP 18000DB PDF on our site

18000DB.pdf is a one-page BHP specification sheet, not an installation guide. It covers the Pacific Heights lever items 18111DB (passage), 18211DB (privacy), 18311DB (dummy), 18511DBRT/LT (entry) and 18911DB (handleset trim lever), with drawings, door prep, function and handing. It is headed Pacific Heights VIII Collection Specifications and is not the sheet BHP links today. BHP's Pacific Heights Lever DB sheet describes the privacy set differently (outside lever locked by a push button inside, inside lever always free) and lists the entry set as 18511DB.

Notes printed on the templates

  • Height: Manuals 05, 07 and 14 recommend a centerline 36 inches from the floor, Manual 03 starts at 38 inches, and Manual 13 shows 36 to 40 inches from the bottom of the door.
  • Handing: BHP's Door Handing Guide says to face the door from the outside (or less secure) side; hinge on the right means right handed, on the left, left handed. See our door handing chart and door prep guide.
