Before you order a Schlage or Emtek knob, lever, deadbolt or handleset for a home door, check the holes, the backset, the door thickness and the strike in the frame. Below we compare the numbers printed in the manufacturers' instructions and templates and show where the installation steps are.

Schlage: door preparation instructions 115799 (no holes) and 115798 (existing holes), both on Schlage's residential door preparation page, and the B60/B62 deadbolt and F-Series handleset instructions. Emtek: the guides for passage and privacy sets and for UL single cylinder deadbolts, the tubular entry set template, product pages and the Emtek FAQ.
Schlage backset: 2-3/8 or 2-3/4 inch
Schlage's existing-holes instructions say that if the backset is not 2-3/8 or 2-3/4 inches, the lock will not fit properly. How the latch or bolt is set:
- F-Series knobs and levers: Schlage's F10 and F40 product pages describe a universal latch for either backset that needs no tools or manual adjustments, with radius and drive-in faceplates. In the Quick Start Guide, an edge with only a round hole calls for the circular faceplate.
- B60 and B62 deadbolts: step 3 shows either no change or twisting the faceplate to extend the bolt. Step 4 removes a ring when the cross bore is 1-1/2 inches.
- F-Series handlesets: step 1b says no adjustment is necessary at 2-3/8 inches; at 2-3/4 inches the "Adjust deadbolt" panel shows the latch or bolt pulled out to the long setting.
Emtek backset: chosen when you order
Emtek's FAQ says its locks fit a standard American-style tubular door prep and come in 2-3/8 and 2-3/4 inch backsets. Its pages for the Stuttgart lever, Round knob, Regular and Modern deadbolts and Melrose entry set state that the standard latch is for a 2-3/8 inch backset and that 2-3/4 inches must be specified if required. For replacement locks, the FAQ says the existing door prep will most likely be correct. You only need to determine the backset. For a new door, it recommends choosing the lock first, because entry set hole locations depend on the lock and design.
Door thickness and thick-door kits
Schlage
- Knobs and levers: if the door is thinner than 1-3/8 or thicker than 1-3/4 inches, the door preparation instructions say the lock will not fit properly.
- B60 and B62 deadbolts: the instructions show 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inches; Schlage's current product pages list 1-3/8 to 1-7/8. The B60 Thick Door Kit instructions (P516-065) cover four ranges from 2-1/4 to 4 inches, with cut marks on the driver bar and two mounting screws (no cut for the thickest range).
- F-Series handlesets: the instructions show 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inches; Schlage's F60 product page lists 1-1/2 to 1-7/8 standard and a thick door kit for doors up to 2-1/4. The F60 Thick Door Kit instructions (P516-366) add longer screws and a longer tailpiece, plus a thick-door chassis for square style handlesets.
Where instructions and product pages differ, check the instructions packed with your lock.
Emtek
- Knobs and levers: the Stuttgart lever and Round knob pages give 1-1/4 to 2 inches, or 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inches with the Concealed Fastener (CF) mechanism; thicker doors must be specified. Emtek's door thickness sheet lists extended ranges for the brass Stuttgart lever (STU) up to 3 inches, with extended components such as longer rosette screws and an extended full-lip strike.
- Entry sets: Emtek's brass tubular entry set specifications list the Melrose (4212) single cylinder set at 1-3/4 to 2-1/8 inches standard, with extended ranges up to 3 inches.
- Deadbolts: the FAQ lists extension kits for doors up to 3-3/8 inches.
Strike preparation in the door frame
- Schlage knobs and levers (115799, steps 6-7): strike centered opposite the latch hole, a 1 inch hole 1/2 inch deep and a 1/16 inch mortise extending to the edge of the jamb for the latch lip.
- Schlage B60 and B62 (step 7): strike hole at least 1-1/4 inches deep.
- Emtek passage and privacy sets: reference strike dimensions for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors; actual jamb prep varies, so the strike is located from its outline and the jamb center line.
- Emtek UL single cylinder deadbolt and monolithic entry set guides: deadbolt strike mortise 2-3/4 by 1-1/8 inches, 3/16 inch deep.
Where the installation steps are
- Schlage 115799 (no holes): steps 1-4 door, step 5 latch mortise, steps 6-7 strike; 115798 (existing holes): steps 1-3 measure, step 4 jamb.
- Schlage B60/B62 instructions, including the B62 double cylinder deadbolt: step 1 door, step 3 bolt, step 7 strike.
- Schlage F-Series handleset (F60, F62, F93): step 1 door dimensions, including a 3/8 inch hole for the bottom of the handle; step 9 strikes.
- Emtek passage and privacy guide: sections 1-3; entry set guides: sections 1-2. The entry set template places the 3/8 inch handle hole by model (Melrose: model B, 8-5/8 inches below the lower bore center).
