The HES 1006, 1500, 1600, 5000 and 5200 electric strikes are ordered as a strike body with separate faceplates or as a complete pack, and the faceplate depends on the lock and the frame; the surface mounted 9600 needs none. This page shows how HES builds these order numbers, which faceplates HES lists for each body, and what to note before you order.
How an HES electric strike number is built
HES How to Order charts read left to right, as in the sample row of the 1006 chart: 1006 - F - 630 - LBM.
| Part | What it means | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Series | Strike body family | 1006, 1500, 5000, 9600 |
| Model | Blank = body only; a code = complete pack | C, CS, CLB, CDB, CAS |
| F | Fail safe, in the 1006 chart | 1006-F |
| Finish | Finish number or code | 630, 613E, BSP |
| Option | Monitor switch | LBM, LBSM, LM, DLM |
- Complete packs: C for the 1500, 5000 and 5200; CS, CLB and CDB for the 1600; CS, CLB, CDB and CAS for the 1006. The charts say Complete Pacs are only available in the 630 finish; HES's FAQ adds that other finishes are a custom product, or the body and faceplates can be ordered separately. See our finish codes chart.
- Monitors: LBM (latchbolt monitor) and LBSM (latchbolt strike monitor) for the 1006 (not with the CS, CDB or CAS packs), 5200 and 9600, LBM only for the 5000, and LM, DLM, LMS and DLMS for the 1500 and 1600. Per the FAQ, LBM and LBSM switches cannot be bought separately; for the 1500 and 1600, LM and DLM also come as OPT-1LM and OPT-1DLM kits.
- Voltage: per HES's FAQ, all six series take 12 or 24 volts out of the box, the 1006 and 9600 on DC only; the charts have no voltage position.
Fail secure or fail safe
In HES's electric strike FAQ, fail secure means that if the power fails, the strike stays secure; fail safe means that it unlocks. HES asks you to confirm with the local authority having jurisdiction which function is required.
- 1006: the number tells you; per HES, the 1006 is fail secure only and the 1006-F fail safe only.
- 1500, 1600, 5000, 5200 and 9600: HES lists them as field selectable, so the number does not show how an installed strike was set. The 1500/1600, 5000 and 9400-9800 instructions say those units ship in fail secure mode.
- The 1500 data sheet lists its UL 10C fire ratings as fail secure only, and the 9400-9800 instructions warn that fail safe mode should not be used in fire rated or windstorm resistant applications.
Which faceplates HES lists for each body
| Body | Faceplates in the HES documents |
|---|---|
| 1006 | J, KD, KM, HM, HTD, ND, NM, E, R, Z, LB, DB, CAS; J-2, KM-2, DB-2, CAS-2 for wood |
| 1500 | 1LB kit (1J, 1K, 1KD, 1KM) |
| 1600 | 1LB kit; 1DB kit (1N, 1ND, 1NM, 1NTD, 1H bracket) |
| 5000, 5200 | 501, 501A, 502, 503, 504 |
| 9600 | None: "no faceplates required" |
1006 faceplates
- The catalog names the lock type for each faceplate, for example J for cylindrical locksets up to a 3/4 inch throw. KD and KM both cover mortise locksets up to a 3/4 inch latchbolt but list different locks, for example Schlage under KD and Corbin Russwin under KM. HES calls this "For use with" information a recommendation only and refers you to the lockset manufacturer.
- Legacy faceplates remain available; the catalog suggests HM for H, HTD for HD and HT, KM for K.
- The CAS faceplates and brackets are factory installed and not sold separately; the DB brackets come only in the DB kit.
1500 and 1600 faceplate kits
- The 1500 data sheet says all faceplates are interchangeable between the 1500 and 1600.
- The 1500 is for locks without a deadbolt; the 1600 is larger to accommodate deadbolt locks and has the 1DB kit.
- For a wood jamb, the 1500/1600 instructions show 1LB-2 for mortise or cylindrical locks without a deadbolt and 1DB-2 for mortise locks with a deadbolt.
- Retrofit kits that cover gaps in an older prep: 1600-106 for a 1600 where a 1006 was, 1500-106 for a 1500 where a 4500C was.
5000 and 5200 faceplates and lip extensions
- Both charts list faceplates for cylindrical locksets only: 501 for ANSI metal frames, 501A, 502 and 503 for aluminum, and 504 for wood. The 501 has square corners, the 501A round corners for aluminum (FAQ).
- The 5000C and 5200C packs include the 501 and 501A only.
- Stackable lip extensions: 5104-1/2, 5104-1 and 5104-1-1/4 for the 5000, and 5204 in the same sizes for the 5200.
- The 5000 takes 1/2 or 5/8 inch latchbolts; the 5200 is slightly larger and takes up to 3/4 inch.
9600 and other surface mounted strikes
The 9600 is a surface mounted strike for rim exit devices with a 3/4 inch throw Pullman latchbolt (see our exit device types guide), and its cover is not sold separately. HES's selector guide lists more surface mounted models: 9400 (rim latchbolts up to 1/2 inch throw), 9700 (Squarebolt) and 9800 (Adams Rite Starwheel or interlocking latchbolts).
Other HES strike parts
- 1000-110 replacement strike plate: covers the prep left when a 1006 is removed.
- 1006-103 full keeper shims. HES's FAQ says the 1006, 1500 and 1600 have no lip extensions; the 1000-104, 1500-104 and 1600-104 lip extension trim adapters add 1/2 inch of trim around the cutout.
- Solenoids: per the FAQ, the 1006, 5000 and 5200 solenoids cannot be replaced; for the 1500 and 1600 HES lists the MOD-1SOL replacement module.
What to note before ordering
HES's selector guide says the existing locking hardware determines the compatible electric strike and asks whether the frame is hollow metal, aluminum or wood. Have ready:
- the HES number or series
- fail secure or fail safe (the F on a 1006)
- finish and monitor option
- the supply voltage, AC or DC
- the faceplate letters or number, the lock make and model, and the frame material
HES strikes and faceplates at The Builders Supply
- HES - all HES products; Electric Strikes - strikes of several brands
- Our titles do not always follow the chart: HES 1006-F-613E-LBSM does, while HES 1006LBM630 puts the monitor before the finish.
- Faceplates, parts and a surface strike: KM630, 1LB630, 501A630, 5104-1/2IN, 1000-110, 9600-613E-LBM
