When you order a new or replacement door lock, the first thing to check is its function. It says what each side of the door does: whether the outside lever is always unlocked, locked by a button on the inside, or opened only with a key. The name alone is not always enough, since one name can cover more than one lock. Below are the common functions (passage, privacy, entrance or office, storeroom and classroom) with the function codes and ANSI numbers that Sargent and Schlage print in their catalogs and service manuals.
What a lock function is
Schlage and Sargent list their functions in tables: a function code, a name and a description of how the lock works. Schlage's ND-Series service manual describes the outside and the inside of each function in separate columns; Sargent's catalogs give one function description per code. Both tables have an ANSI number column, empty or marked with a dash for some functions.
Common lock functions at a glance
From the function table for Schlage ND-Series cylindrical locks (mortise locks can differ, see below):
| Function | Outside lever | Inside lever |
|---|---|---|
| Passage | Always unlocked | Always unlocked |
| Privacy (bath or bedroom) | Locked by the inside button; emergency release from outside | Button locks outside; turning lever or closing door releases it |
| Entrance or office | Locked by the inside button; key unlocks | Button locks outside; turning lever releases it |
| Storeroom | Fixed; entrance by key only | Always unlocked |
| Classroom | Locked or unlocked by key | Always unlocked |
| Classroom security | Locked or unlocked by key in either lever | Key locks or unlocks the outside lever |
In all six rows the manual describes the inside lever as always unlocked or always free. The functions differ in the outside lever: never locked (passage), locked by a button inside (privacy, entrance or office), locked and unlocked by key (classroom, classroom security), or fixed, with entrance by key only (storeroom).
Sargent and Schlage cylindrical lock functions
Function codes for cylindrical (bored) locks, with the ANSI number in parentheses as printed in Schlage's ND-Series service manual and Sargent's 10X Line catalog:
| Function | Schlage ND Series | Sargent 10X Line |
|---|---|---|
| Passage | ND10 (F75) | 10XU15 (F75) |
| Privacy | ND40 (F76) | 10XU65, 10XU66 (F76A) |
| Entrance or office | ND50 (F82) | 10XG24 (F82A) |
| Storeroom | ND80 (F86) | 10XG04 (F86) |
| Classroom | ND70 (F84) | 10XG37 (F84) |
| Classroom security | ND75 (F110) | 10XG38 (F110) |
Schlage's ALX Series service manual uses the same ANSI numbers for ALX10S passage, ALX40 privacy, ALX50PD entrance or office, ALX70PD classroom and ALX80PD storeroom.
Sargent and Schlage mortise lock functions
From Schlage's L Series service manual and Sargent's 7800 and 8200 Series mortise lock catalog:

Same name, different lock: read the description
- The ANSI number depends on the lock type. Passage is F75 for both brands' cylindrical locks above and F01 for both brands' mortise locks. Schlage prints its ND table under ANSI/BHMA A156.2 and its L Series table under A156.13.
- Entrance or office. Sargent's 10X catalog lists two functions named Entrance or Office: 10XG24 (F82A), where a push button locks the outside lever, and 10XG05 (F109), with a push and turn button that must be released manually once it is turned. In Schlage's ND manual, F82 is the ND50 entrance or office lock and F109 is the ND53, which the manual calls an entrance lock.
- Closet. Sargent's mortise catalog uses the word in more than one function name, for example 8215 Passage or Closet, where the trim on either side always retracts the latchbolt, and 8204 Storeroom or Closet, where the outside trim is locked at all times.
- Privacy release. Sargent's 10XU65 and 10XU66 share F76A and differ in the emergency release in the outside lever: a coin turn (tool not provided) or an emergency release key or tool (provided). Schlage's ND40 opens from outside with a small screwdriver or an emergency release tool; the L9040 uses an emergency thumbturn, which is furnished.
- Thumbturn instead of a button. Schlage's L9040 privacy and L9050 entrance or office mortise locks are locked by a thumbturn inside. On the L9050 the key outside also locks the outside lever, and turning the inside lever does not unlock it (L Series manual). Sargent's 8205 and 8265 also use a thumbturn.
Names and codes are a shortcut. The exact behavior of a lock is in the manufacturer's function description for that series.
Sargent how to order: the function in the model number
Sargent's how-to-order charts show where the function goes:
- 8200 Series mortise locks: series 82 plus a two-digit function, so 8204 is the storeroom or closet function and 8237 is classroom. The catalog's example 10- 82 71 12VDC TR MJ 15 RHR reads: options, series, function, voltage, rose or escutcheon, trim, finish and hand.
- 10X Line cylindrical locks: the Lock and Function field holds the whole code, such as 10XG05, followed by rose, lever, hand and finish.
- 8800 Series rim exit devices: series 88 plus a function, as in the catalog's example F1-83-56 88 13 F ETL RHR (options, series, function, rail length, trim, hand), followed by finishes and door width.
Sargent 8800 exit device functions
Exit devices have their own function list. In the 8800 table, 04 is a night latch (key retracts latch), 06 means the key unlocks the trim and the trim relocks when the key is removed, 10 is no outside operation, 13 means the key outside unlocks and locks the trim, and 15 is passage only. The same two digits can mean different things: 04 is storeroom or closet on an 8200 mortise lock and night latch on an 8800 exit device. The ANSI number is a separate code: the catalog lists 8813 as ANSI 08. Hand codes such as RHR are explained in our door handing chart.
