Knape & Vogt Drawer Slides and Shelf Standards: How to Identify a Part and Find a Replacement

When a Knape & Vogt (KV) drawer slide, shelf standard or bracket has to be replaced, start with its part number and with the old part itself. Below we show how to read KV part numbers and what to check on the old part before you order a replacement.

How a Knape & Vogt drawer slide part number is built

In the guide's ordering tables for the 1300, 8400, 8450FM, 8500 and TT100, a part number is made of the series, a pack letter, a finish code in some tables, and the size:

• 8400B 14 - 8400 series, Bulk pack, 14 inch size, from the Anochrome (ANO) table.
• 8400B EB 14 - the same size from the Ebony Black (EB) table.
• 1300P ZC 14 - 1300 series, Poly pack, Zinc (ZC) finish, 14 inch size.
• TT100B 450 - Tru-Trac TT100, Bulk pack, listed under the 450mm size.

The pack letters are explained in the Configurations box above these tables. On the 8400 page, Bulk (B) is 10 pairs per carton without screws, Poly (P) is 1 pair per bag with screws, and Quantity (Q) is 50 pairs without screws. These are the manufacturer's packs; ask us what one unit on a product page contains.

FM in 8450FM stands for the Force Management soft-close technology. The 8400RV, listed as 8400BRV in its ordering table, is a self-closing slide with a stronger spring for mobile applications.

The Product Guide says these pound classes are general guidelines for slide selection and not the same as actual load ratings, which vary with slide length, application and case goods construction. It also describes travel. A 3/4 travel slide extends to approximately 75% of the slide's length, a full travel slide brings the drawer's back wall even with the front of the cabinet, and an over travel slide extends beyond the front of the cabinet frame by 1 to 2 inches. In the pairs 8400/8405, 8450FM/8455FM, 8500/8505 and 8810/8815, the second number is the over travel version.

What to check before replacing a drawer slide

KV installation sheet 300834 for the 8400, 8405, 8407 and 8409 tells anyone replacing existing drawer slides to confirm four things about the new slide:

• its load rating will accommodate the anticipated drawer load,
• it uses a similar mounting style,
• it is the correct length,
• it will fit within the available clearance between drawer and cabinet.

The series pages print the figures to compare. The 8400 page lists side mounting, a height of 1.79 inches (45.5 mm), a clearance of .50 inch on each side (tolerance +.03 and -0 inch) and a recommended maximum drawer width of 24 inches. The guide describes operating clearance as the space between the drawer and the case and says it must be held within the specified tolerances.

Drawer slide removal and front mount or rear mount brackets

For drawer removal, look up the slide's disconnect type. The quick reference guide lists a lever release for the 8400, lift out for the 1805, a quick disconnect rail for the 8500 and 8505, and no disconnect for the 8900. For the steps, follow the manufacturer's installation sheet for your series.

Mounting brackets have their own part numbers. The 8400 page lists rear brackets 8401 and 8402 and front bracket 8404; the installation sheet says rear mounting brackets 8402 are included with model 8409 and optional on models 8400, 8405 and 8407. The Product Guide does not list an 8409.

KV shelf standards and brackets: 80/180, 82/182, 85/185, 87/187

Standards and brackets have separate part numbers and are paired by series. The Product Guide gives each system's slot design, vertical slot adjustment and standard size.

The table covers only these systems. The guide also lists a narrow 71/170 system, a stainless steel 87/186/187 system and pilaster standards with 1/2 inch vertical slot adjustment: mortise-mount 255 with 256 shelf supports and surface-mount 233.

In the part numbers, 80 WH 48 is a 48 inch 80 series standard in White (WH), 180 WH 10 is a 10 inch 180 series bracket, and 82BP BLK 48 is a Black (BLK) 82 series standard from the Builders Pack (BP) table, a pack the guide lists with no UPC labels.

To identify an existing standard, compare its width, depth, slot design and length with the guide; the 82 series is listed in lengths of 12, 16.5, 28, 39, 48, 63, 78 and 94 inches. The guide prints notes on mixing series. One says that 180 Anochrome brackets and all other KV 1 inch adjustable brackets can be used with 85 series double-slotted standards. That note names KV parts only; we cannot confirm that a KV bracket fits another maker's standard.

Screws and anchors are separate items: the guide lists packs 80-88DP for 80 series standards and 82DP SCREW ZC for the 82 series.
