Rixson Pivots and Floor Closer Parts: How to Identify 117, 147, 180 and 340 Pivots and Replacement Parts

This page shows how to identify Rixson pivot sets, top pivots and intermediate pivots by model number (117, 147, 180, 340, 370, M19) and how the manufacturer's documents list Rixson floor closer replacement parts: closer body, bottom arm package, floor plate, cement case and top pivot.

Rixson pivot sets: 117, 147 and 370

The catalog divides pivot sets into offset hung and center hung. A selection of the sets it lists:

The 117 (interior doors) and the 147 (exterior or interior doors) are handed, and for both the catalog notes that door size and weight guidelines are determined using the appropriate number of intermediate pivots. The 370 and the 117-3/4 are non-handed. The bottom pivot of the 117 and of the 117-3/4 is mortised into the floor; on the 147 and the 370 it mounts directly to the floor.

Four entries in the catalog's contents start with 117: besides the 117 and the center hung 117-3/4, the 117-1/4 (offset, bottom pivot mortised into the side jamb) and the 117-1/2 (offset, door weight to 650 lbs).

Top pivots: 180 and 340

• 180 - offset hung top pivot, full mortise and non-handed. The catalog calls it the standard top pivot for most offset pivot sets and floor closers. For extra wide or high traffic the catalog adds the prefix H: the H180 has heavy-duty needle bearings.
• 340 - center hung top pivot, fully concealed and non-handed. It is the standard top pivot for the 370 and 117-3/4 sets and is also used for 28, 30, 40 and 50 Series floor closers. The heavy-duty H340 is the standard top pivot for the H117-3/4 set.

A set ordered without its top pivot carries the suffix LTP (less top pivot).

Intermediate pivots: 119, M19 and M190

All three models below are handed.

• 119 - not load-bearing, 3/4 inch offset only. Used with 117, 117-1/4 and 195 pivot sets and 127 and 427 floor closers.
• M19 - not load-bearing. The 147 pivot set and the model 27 floor closer require it; it is sold separately.
• M190 - lateral load-bearing. Used when the frame condition does not allow a standard top pivot.

Prefixes and suffixes in a Rixson pivot number

• x 1-1/2 (1-1/2OS in the price book) - 1-1/2 inch offset instead of the standard 3/4 inch. The 117 x 1-1/2 is listed for a door weight of 150 lbs.
• F - fire rated model (F117, F180, FM19); -20 - 20 minute label.
• L - for lead-lined, heavy or high traffic doors (L147, L180, ML19). The door thickness must be specified.

Rixson floor closer parts: body, arm, floor plate, cement case

The parts drawings in the floor closers catalog show a model 27 or 28 closer as a top pivot, a bottom arm package, a floor plate, the closer body and a cement case. The price book says the packages below are included with the closer models, except LAP, and can be ordered separately.

The cement case for both is 253000-PKG. R and L are right hand and left hand; N models are non-hold open, S models selective hold open. Top pivots, arm packages and floor plates also need a finish code, as in 252050R 626. The closer body is ordered by its complete model number with LAP (less all parts). In the parts drawing, the 27 bottom arm package includes the arm cap and screw, the 3/4 inch offset arm with locking screw, the spindle shoulder collar and attaching screws.

Some numbers differ in other series; the price book lists cement case 253001 for the L27 and H28, for example.

The spindle and the threshold are not listed as separate parts of the 27 or 28. The catalog states that extended spindles cannot be added in the field. Both closers are available with floor plate or threshold installation; LFP (less floor plate) is the option when a threshold or cover pan is used.

Rixson floor closer adjustment

For the 27 and 28 the catalog lists separate and independent valves for closing speed, latch speed and backcheck. How to adjust them is in the installation instructions; for the 27 and 27-180 that is the Closer Adjustment section on page 4 of sheet 2700T (Rev 3, 01/22). The same sheet states that repairs, parts replacement or internal adjustments must be done by a Norton Rixson authorized repair agency. Norton Rixson publishes its installation instructions in its document library.

Before you order: hand, offset, door weight

• Hand. Both catalogs list two hands, RH and LH. The floor closers catalog: "Face a door swinging open away from you. If it opens to the right, it is right handed. If it opens to the left, it is left handed." Our door handing chart explains all four door hands.
• Offset. According to the pivots catalog, extended offsets should not be used unless there is cladding on the face of the door or trim to clear on the frame, and the greater the offset, the less weight the pivot can carry.
• Door weight and height. The door weights above are the catalog figures. For the 147, the catalog says doors 60 to 90 inches in height should use one intermediate pivot, and each additional 30 inches warrants another.
