A Pfister faucet that drips, a pull-down spray head with a cracked face, an aerator that lets only a trickle through: each repair ends with a Pfister part number. The way to it starts with the faucet's model number, and the letters at the end of a part number matter as much as the digits.
Find your Pfister faucet model number first
Pfister prints the model number on the product package and on the instruction manual, right below the product name. Its own example is F-529-7AYY.
No box and no manual? Pfister's online catalog includes discontinued faucets. Open Kitchen or Bathroom on pfisterfaucets.com, choose your faucet type and narrow the list by finish and style. For a faucet more than 5 years old, Pfister's support articles suggest switching on the show discontinued button.
Pfister's FAQ lists the documents in the Installation and Support section of each faucet page:
- Parts Diagram: a detailed parts explosion for identifying and ordering replacement parts.
- Instruction Sheet: the installation guide supplied with the faucet.
- Maintenance Guide: common jobs such as cartridge removal.
- Specification Submittal: dimensions, flow rate, code compliance and certifications.
How Pfister part numbers are written
On Pfister's parts pages the part number sits on a line labeled Model, for example Model: 974-0980 for the shear valve with seat and springs. On the parts we looked up that come in several finishes, a letter at the end gives the finish. 950-397A is the Pfirst Series sprayhead in polished chrome; 950-397S is the same sprayhead in stainless steel.
Pfister's 973-030 shower arm page lists seven finishes, and the stainless steel sprayhead adds an eighth letter. Other parts may use letters not shown here.
| Letter | Finish |
|---|---|
| A | Polished Chrome |
| B | Matte Black |
| BG | Brushed Gold |
| D | Polished Nickel |
| J | Brushed Nickel |
| S | Stainless Steel |
| U | Rustic Bronze |
| Y | Tuscan Bronze |
Finished parts we checked in our catalog use the same letters, for example the 962-240A polished chrome collar nut and the 941-503U rustic bronze aerator. A faucet model can use another letter for the same finish: Pfister's Montay bar and prep faucet in polished chrome is GT572-MTC, so choose parts by the finish name. The cartridges and the O-ring we looked up carry no letter (974-0980, 960-8020, 950-1990), and Pfister lists the 974-5319 cartridge as Unfinished.
What the 974-, 950-, 941- and 962- numbers cover
The first three digits do not name a part type. On the Pfister pages we read, the four prefixes covered these parts:
| Prefix | Parts on Pfister's pages |
|---|---|
| 974- | Shear valve 974-0980, 0X8 cartridge 974-5319 |
| 950- | Sprayheads 950-397A and 950-260S, O-ring 950-1990 |
| 941- | Aerator insert 941-4480, handle buttons 941-7830 |
| 962- | Cartridge retainer nut 962-0420 |
Cartridges do not always start with 974- either. Pfister also lists the ceramic disc 1/4 turn cartridges 960-8060 (hot side) and 960-8020 (cold side), and the 910-3050 Roman tub reversible cartridge for the 0X6-040R and 0X6-140R valves. Search by the full number, letter included, never by the prefix alone.
Collar nuts and retainer nuts
Nuts follow the same pattern. Pfister's 962-0420 cartridge retainer nut has no finish letter, while the 962-240A collar nut in our catalog is polished chrome. Find the nut in your faucet's parts diagram and take the letter for your finish from the table above.
Pfister cartridges: hot side, cold side and valve series
Pfister's FAQ gives two routes to a cartridge. With the model number, open the faucet's page, go to Installation and Support and find the cartridge in the parts diagram. If the old cartridge is already out, go to Parts and Support, then Replacement Parts, then Cartridges, and filter by cartridge type. According to the FAQ, each cartridge page shows approximate dimensions and, further down, exact specifications.
Some cartridges have a hot side and a cold side version under separate numbers, like 960-8060 and 960-8020, so check in the parts diagram which side yours is. For a tub or shower valve in the wall, the cartridge name can carry the valve series: 974-5319 is Pfister's 0X8 Cartridge. The FAQ names 0X8, 0X6, 0X9 and JX8 as example valve series.
Pfister spray heads and pull-down hoses
The two sprayheads we looked up carry a Pfister collection name: 950-260S is the Lita Kitchen Pull Down Sprayhead in stainless steel, and 950-397 is the Pfirst Series Sprayhead. The hose is a separate part with its own number, for example 951-1840, the kitchen pull down hose with quick connect for the 529 Lita.
Pfister's hose article says nylon pull-out and pull-down hoses wear with daily use and may well need replacing during the faucet's life. To get the right one, find your faucet in Pfister's kitchen catalog under Pull-Out or Pull-Down and note its name and model number.
Pfister faucet aerators and aerator inserts
Pfister's FAQ separates threaded aerators you can see from hidden or cache aerators, which sit recessed. A cache aerator needs a Pfister aerator key, or on some models a coin or flat screwdriver. On pull-out kitchen faucets the cache type sits flush with the spray face, and Pfister says it will send a key if the one supplied with the faucet is lost.
For the size, the FAQ points to the Specifications on the faucet's page or to measuring the thread of the old aerator. It names M21.5, M24 and M28 as common references, and 15/16 inch male and 55/64 inch female as typical inch sizes. Pfister asks you to confirm the faucet model and the aerator size before you buy.
Low flow does not always mean a new part. Pfister's troubleshooting page calls the aerator a common cause of low water pressure, and its FAQ on low pressure starts with cleaning the aerator before it turns to the cartridge.
Is the faucet still under Pfister's warranty?
Pfister's lifetime limited warranty covers function and finish for as long as you own your home; commercial use limits its duration. If your faucet is covered, Pfister asks you to contact its customer service for the part at 1-800-PFAUCET (1-800-732-8238), and to call before buying parts if you are not sure. Its replacement parts page lists what a warranty claim needs, proof of purchase included.
