A pry bar has chewed the edge of a door, a lock change has left holes the new lock does not cover, or the latch of an outswinging door needs a guard. Three Don-Jo product families come up in these repairs: latch protectors, wrap-around plates and door reinforcers. Which number fits depends on the door swing, the lock, the backset and the door thickness.
Latch protector, wrap-around plate or door reinforcer
Two Don-Jo catalogs cover these parts: the latch protector catalog (PDF) and the wrap-arounds catalog (PDF), which also lists the 10-FE and 20-FE door reinforcers.
- Latch protector - a steel or stainless steel plate for the latch side of the door. The catalog describes the LP-111, LP-211 and MLP models as covering the strike plate completely.
- Wrap-around plate - listed by lock and hole size, then by backset and door thickness.
- Door reinforcer - the 10-FE and 20-FE for deadbolts and key-in-knob locks, 4-1/2 by 1 inch. There is no backset to choose, only the door: 1-3/8 inch for the 10-FE, 1-3/4 inch for the 20-FE.
Latch protectors: start with the door swing
Of the 25 product headings in the latch protector catalog, 16 name outswinging doors. One names inswinging doors: the Interlock, ILP-206 and ILP-212. Its instruction sheet shows a two-piece design and says it does not interfere with the working function of the door or the lock. The 6 inch ILP-206 is listed for key-in-knob and deadbolt locks; the 12 inch ILP-212 for mortise locks, Simplex 1000 series, Alarm Lock DL-2500, DL-2700 and 3000 and card access systems, among others.
The KLP-110 for electronic locks and the GLP-307 for aluminum entrance doors come in LHR and RHR versions, so check the hand in our door handing chart first.
Latch protectors by lock and backset
A selection from the catalog:
| Lock | Models | Catalog note |
|---|---|---|
| Key-in-knob | CLP-106, NLP-106, ALP-206 | 6 in. |
| Mortise lock | CLP-110, NLP-110, ALP-210 | 10 in. |
| Lock rose up to 3-3/4 in. | SLP, OSLP, DLP | Offset 3/8, 3/4, 1-1/8 in. |
| Key-in-lever | BLP | Escutcheon up to 3-3/4 in. |
Three more groups are listed as fitting most models, not every one: TLP-110 and TLP-210 for exit device and mortise lock trims, KLP-110 for access control locks, and ELP-208, LELP-208 and MELP-210 for electric strikes.
The LP-111, LP-211 and the pin models PLP-111 and PLP-211 are listed for 2-3/8 and 2-3/4 inch backsets. The PLP and PMLP carry a solid steel pin welded on the back. The LP-312 is listed for an Adams Rite latch lock on an outswinging door, with a 1-1/8 inch backset.
EBF special fasteners, made to prevent interference with the frame, are an option on selected models. In the finish codes DU stands for Duronatic brown coated, CP for chrome plated and 630 for brushed stainless steel.
Wrap-around plates: lock holes, backset and door thickness
For a cylindrical lock with a 2-1/8 inch hole, the 1-CW to 4-CW follow one grid:
| Number | Backset | Door |
|---|---|---|
| 1-CW | 2-3/8 in. | 1-3/8 in. |
| 2-CW | 2-3/8 in. | 1-3/4 in. |
| 3-CW | 2-3/4 in. | 1-3/8 in. |
| 4-CW | 2-3/4 in. | 1-3/4 in. |
These plates measure 4 by 9 inches, or 4-1/4 by 9 for the 2-3/4 inch backset. The same four combinations repeat in the 5-CW to 8-CW for deadbolts with a 1-1/2 inch hole and in the 51-CW, 61-CW, 71-CW and 81-CW for cylindrical locks, both 4-5/16 inches instead of 9. Our door prep guide covers backset and door thickness.
Plates for double lock combination locksets go by hole sizes and center distance (a selection):
| Holes | Centers | Models |
|---|---|---|
| 2-1/8 and 2-1/8 in. | 3-5/8 in. | 151, 261, 481-CW |
| 1-1/2 over 2-1/8 in. | 4 in. | 154, 264, 484-CW |
| 2-1/8 and 2-1/8 in. | 4 in. | 942, 943-CW |
| 2-1/8 and 2-1/8 in. | 5-1/2 in. | 256, 258-CW |
Within a row the number changes with the backset and the door: the 256-CW is listed for a 2-3/8 inch backset, the 258-CW for 2-3/4 inches. Other groups in the catalog include:
- Thicker doors: 200-CW for 2 inch, 214-CW for 2-1/4 inch and 212-CW for 2-1/2 inch doors, with C versions for a 2-3/8 inch backset.
- Extended backsets: 33-CW for 3-3/4 inches and 55-CW for 5 inches.
- Heavy duty grade 1 and 2 key-in-levers: 1-2-CW to 4-2-CW and 81-2-CW, listed for Schlage, Arrow, Yale, Sargent, Corbin Russwin and Falcon T.
- Specific locks, among them Best and Sargent lever locks (5K-CW, 9K-CW), Marks levers (75-CW, 95-CW) and Alarm Lock 2700/T2, 3000 and DL4100 (27-CW).
- Lock changes: 14-CW for converting Simplex 1000 and Alarm Lock DL2500, 2700/T2 and 3000 series locks to cylindrical locks, 4U-2-CW for unit locks to lever locks.
- Mortise locks with an 86 cut-out: 504-CW and 514-CW, the latter with a 2-3/4 inch backset. The catalog notes that the spindle and thumb turn holes are drilled in the field.
For the wrap-arounds in both tables above, the catalog lists finishes as a letter code with a number: 10B (613), AB (609), BZ (612), PB (605) and S (630). Some other groups offer only 10B, PB and S. In product names such as 2-PB-CW the finish sits in the middle, so this is the 2-CW in PB.
Strike side, hinge side and the FE parts
The 478 and 234 wrap-arounds are made for the inactive door, prepared and reinforced for a 4-7/8 inch ASA strike or a 2-3/4 inch T-strike, sold separately. Don-Jo describes the 45-CW and 50-CW as wrap-arounds to repair the hinge side, prepared for a 4-1/2 inch or 5 inch commercial hinge.
Every FE number in the catalog (10, 20, 45, 50, 234, 478 and 504) has a 1 inch dimension, while the CW plates measure at least 3 inches on their smaller side. The catalogs give no rule for choosing a reinforcer over a wrap-around, so if old holes or damage on the face of the door have to be covered, compare them with the plate dimensions.
Templates and installation instructions
Don-Jo's website lists templates by model number for wrap-arounds and latch protectors. Its installation instructions page has sheets for the Interlock and for the 45 and 50 hinge side plates; follow them when you mount the part. When no table fits your door, the wrap-arounds catalog ends with a quote form for custom wrap-arounds up to 20 inches high and 6-1/2 inches wide.
