Reese Thresholds Explained: Saddle, Half Saddle, Panic, Thermal Break, Interlock and Assembly Components

Ordering a Reese threshold, or replacing one? Start with the product ID that Reese Enterprises, Inc. gives each threshold, such as S205 or S483. If the order leaves out the insert letter, the result depends on the ID: Reese's catalog says a vinyl insert is shipped for some IDs, a neoprene insert for others and no insert for five half saddles. Below we explain the Reese threshold groups we carry, how to read a profile size such as 5 x 1/2, which panic thresholds take an insert and what Reese says about assembly components.

The Reese documents behind this page

The facts below come mainly from the Thresholds section (pages 8-22) of the Reese 2024 Door Hardware Catalog (PDF) and the threshold lists on reeseusa.com. For threshold types in general, see our guide to NGP threshold types.

Reese threshold groups and how many we list

Reese's thresholds page lists these groups: Saddles, Offset Saddles, Half Saddles, Panic Bumper, Thermal Break, Assembly Components, Interlock Thresholds, Ramps, and Transitions. We have about 1,900 Reese threshold pages, one per product ID, finish, insert and length or size (S205A: 36 to 96 inch lengths):

  • Panic: about 730 pages (catalog pages 16-18)
  • Saddle: about 460 (pages 8-13 and 22)
  • Assembly component: about 290 (page 20)
  • Half saddle: about 190 (pages 14-15)
  • Ramp and transition: 100 (pages 21-22)
  • Thermal break: 48, the S567, S569, S570 and S571, printed as Offset Thermal Break Thresholds (page 13)
  • Interlock threshold: 48 (page 19)
  • Offset saddle: 36, the S512, S514 and S714 (page 11)
  • Hospitality thresholds, six IDs from 1010B to 1021B: 11 (page 41)

The website files some IDs in several lists, while each of our product names carries one group. The Thermal Break Thresholds of pages 12-13 (S282, S471, S472, S473, S475, S478, S479, S481) are named Saddle here, and the Thermal Break Panic Thresholds of page 18 are named Panic.

Reading a Reese profile size: S205 is 5 x 1/2

Reese's website gives the S205 saddle a profile size of 5" x 1/2", and our S205A page shows the same pair as Profile Dimensions. The S205 drawing on page 10 marks 5 inches as the overall width and 1/2 inch as the height.

The table is a selection. Sizes are from reeseusa.com, and the insert letters are the ones the catalog prints for that ID. Where it prints no insert option, the table says none shown.

In all 11 drawings behind the table the first figure is the overall width. Six print two vertical dimensions; the size repeats only one: the S239 and S483 are drawn with 1/2 and 1/4 inch, the S484 and S498 with 7/8 and 1/2 inch, the S512 with 3/4 and 1/2 inch, the S569 with 1 inch and 1/2 inch. When a height matters, check the drawing.

Panic thresholds and their inserts

The catalog's panic pages are Panic Type Thresholds (16-17), Offset Thermal Break Panic Thresholds (17) and Thermal Break Panic Thresholds (18). Its ordering examples read part number, finish, insert: S485DV is the S485 in dark bronze with a grey vinyl insert (page 16). Each insert note applies to the IDs it is printed for:

  • S483 and S257 (page 16): a box of insert options for these two IDs lists U (polyurethane), V (vinyl), PR (polyprene) and S (silicone) and says a vinyl insert is shipped if no insert is specified. We list both IDs with all four letters.
  • S484 to S488 (page 16): a column beside them shows Grey Vinyl (add V), Black Polyprene (add PR), Black Polyurethane (add U) and Grey Pile (add P), under the same note that a vinyl insert is shipped if no insert is specified. Page 18 shows the same four for the S281, S474 and S476, with the same note beside the S281.
  • S498, S500, S501, S502 (page 18) and S598 (page 17): N Neoprene or S Silicone, with a note beside the S500 and S598 that a neoprene insert is shipped if no insert is specified.
  • S248 and S568 (page 17) are drawn with an insert, with no insert options printed; S255, S256 and S258 without one.

Five half saddles follow a different rule. Page 14 marks the S470, S482, S283, S284 and S285 with the insert option S Silicone and says: "Please specify S insert on thresholds S470 through S285. Inserts will not be included in orders if not specified."

Assembly components and the undrilled note

Page 20, Threshold Assembly Components, draws the 232 to 236 and 277 to 280 profiles at half size (2 to 10 inches wide, 1/4 inch high) and others such as the E1, E2, S247 and 480. The E1 also appears on page 22 among the Surface Applied and Elevator Stop Strips.

Four Assembly Examples on the page carry no part numbers. Each shows grooved plates with an edge piece at both ends and the overall width marked Varies. The heights shown are 3/8, 1/4 and 1/2 inch, and one two-level example has 3/4 inch on one side and 3/8 inch on the other. The note beside them reads: "Threshold Plates and accessories are furnished undrilled unless drilling instructions are furnished with order. Ordering fasteners only will not constitute drilling."

Interlock thresholds and hooks

Page 19 draws the T040, T150 and T550 thresholds and the TL4, 203 and TJ3A hooks, and says that for applications requiring a threshold and an aluminum hook, both parts must be specified on your order.

The ratings line

On Reese's website, the ratings line for the IDs listed below reads:

  • S205: "Fire Rated UL10B, Handicapped Thresholds ANSI A117.1"
  • S285 and S483: "Fire Rated UL10B, Handicapped Thresholds ANSI A117.1, Positive Pressure UL10C Category J"
  • S512, S569, T150, E1 and 544: "Fire Rated UL10B"

The catalog shows ratings as symbols beside the drawings (explained on page 4), and the two sources do not always match: the S569 drawing carries the positive pressure (10C) symbol, while the website line for S569 lists only Fire Rated UL10B. Confirm a rating with Reese for the exact product ID. Whether a threshold suits a particular opening is decided by the project specifications and the authority having jurisdiction.
