Replacing a Reese Door Sweep, Door Shoe or Perimeter Seal: Profile, Insert, Finish and Length

To replace a worn door sweep, door shoe or perimeter seal from Reese Enterprises, Inc., you need the details Reese prints for it: the group, the profile, the insert, the finish letter and the length. This page shows where Reese's documents print each one and where our product pages show it.

The Reese documents behind this page

The main source is Reese's 2024 Door Hardware Catalog (PDF): the letter key on page 4, weatherstripping on pages 23-35, door bottoms on pages 36-40. Reese's product pages print the group, available inserts and size of each number; pages such as the 815 and DB595 link installation instructions (the 323 page links only a CAD drawing). For fitting, follow those instructions.

Sweeps, shoes and perimeter seals in general are in our door gasketing guide and NGP door bottom guide; astragals in our astragal guide.

1. The group and where it goes

  • Perimeter seals: Reese describes them as sealing the door header and jambs; the catalog's perimeter strip pages (23-26, 30-31) are arranged by insert.
  • Hardware compatible (page 27): the page's illustration is captioned "Closers and holders mounted on weatherstrips."
  • Adjustable door stops (page 28) and self-adhesive strips (page 29): notes below.
  • Interlocking weatherstrip (page 35): "ideally suited for metal doors with transoms."
  • Door bottoms: door sweeps (page 36), door shoes and extenders (page 37), rain drips (page 40). The R201 is "Especially designed for overhead installations."

Our titles name the group after the part number. A number can sit in two groups: Reese lists the DB595 under Door Shoe/Extender and Rain Drip; our title calls it a door shoe and extender.

2. Profile number and size

In 323C, the profile is 323 and C is the finish; our Specifications show the profile as the Product ID.

Reese's product pages give a size in two numbers, such as 3/16 x 1-3/4 inches for the 323; on the ten numbers we checked, our Profile Dimensions line matches. The order of the two numbers varies: the 33 door stop is listed as 1-5/16 x 1/2 and the 633 as 1/2 x 1-5/16, though page 28 draws both with the same dimensions.

Page 4 calls the drawings "full size cross-section profiles, unless noted", but a dimension marked on one is not always the overall size: the 815 drawing marks 7/8 inch, while Reese's 815 page lists 1-3/16 x 1/4.

3. The insert

Reese names the insert on its drawings and in the Available Inserts line of its product pages (letters: page 4; pages: contents):

InsertLetterPages
PolyurethaneU23
PolyprenePR24
SiliconeS24
NeopreneN25
VinylV26
PileP26
Nylon brushnone30-31

Page 4 calls polyprene "a thermoplastic rubber compound developed by Reese"; its sponge neoprene is "closed cell", and its vinyl weatherstrips use "cold weather" vinyl.

Some numbers add an insert letter after the finish letter, as in 128CV (vinyl) and 128CP (pile) on page 26; the 815BLK and 323C, each listed with one insert, have none.

For door shoes, page 37 says all products on that page are available with F, "U.L. rated, vinyl insert with fingers"; P, "Pile insert"; or U, "U.L. rated, smooth, polyurethane insert". It adds, in capitals: "Orders with no suffix will automatically receive fingered vinyl inserts." Reese's DB595 page lists fingered vinyl and polyurethane; our DB595DF title reads "Dark Bronze Anodized Aluminum - Fingered Vinyl". This F suffix is not the F- prefix described below.

4. The finish letter

Page 4 lists A mill finish aluminum, B architectural brass, BLK black anodized aluminum, C clear anodized aluminum, D dark bronze anodized aluminum, G gold anodized and SS stainless steel. The 985 brush sweep, for example, is printed as 985C, 985D and 985G (page 31), and our 985C title spells out "Clear Anodized Aluminum - Nylon Brush". On page 29 the letters after self-adhesive numbers are colors, as in 797B Black and 797W White. Reese lists the R201 with "No Insert", and our R201D title gives only the finish.

5. The length, including 797B rolls

Our Reese seals, stops, sweeps, shoes and rain drips are listed in lengths from 36 to 96 inches; the length ends the title and has its own Length line. Self-adhesive strips come in the lengths Reese prints on page 29, such as 17, 19, 21, 25 and 500 ft rolls for the 797 and 798. In our part number 797B-17, the 17 is the 17 ft roll; its Length line reads 204 inches.

Page 29 notes: "All self adhesive weatherstrips must be applied on clean, dry frames between +50 degrees and +100 degrees F. Smoke seals have a pre-installation shelf life of 6 to 9 months."

Adjustable door stops: page 28

  • Maximum adjustment printed beside the drawings: 1/4 inch for the 33, 59 and 633; 7/16 inch for the 99 and 399. The 599 and 659 drawings carry no figure.
  • "These products have been fire rated for use as perimeter seals only and shall not be used in lieu of an integral pressed steel stop on fire rated installations."
  • Beside the 99: "99 cannot be used on existing frames with a stop".

Fire-rated doors and the F- prefix

Pages such as 25, 27 and 37 are headed "To receive UL label on parts, add prefix 'F-' when ordering", and page 5 states: "Materials are not shipped with the UL label unless specified by ordering with the prefix 'F-'." Our pages, such as 815BLK and DB595DF, list Reese part numbers without that prefix. A fire-rated opening is an assembly of labeled door, labeled frame and listed hardware, so a rating printed for a seal does not by itself show that your opening complies. If the door is fire or smoke rated, contact us before you order.
