To replace a National Guard Products (NGP) automatic door bottom, door sweep or door shoe, you need the details NGP prints for it: the mounting, the profile number, the seal and the length. This page shows where NGP's documents print each one and how our product titles show them.
The NGP documents behind this page
The main source is the Gasketing & Automatic Door Bottoms catalog (NGP-CAT-GAS-0926-A) on NGP's Catalogs page: automatic door bottoms on pages G32-G35, door shoes on G36-G42, sweeps on G43-G46 and stainless steel versions on G29. NGP's product pages also link installation sheets, such as:
- 320 automatic door bottom (PDF, marked 8.25)
- 220, 222 and 229SS surface mounted (PDF, marked 8.25)
- 225 and 335 mortise (PDF, marked 3.26)
- 423NA and 423STC heavy duty mortise (PDF, marked 4.26)
- Door sweeps (PDF, marked 8.25)
How NGP numbers are built, the seal and finish letters, the length range and the handing notes are in our NGP model number guide. Pemko's door bottoms are covered in our Pemko automatic door bottom guide.
NGP automatic door bottoms: mounting and size
The catalog sorts NGP automatic door bottoms into four groups: Surface (page G32), Heavy-Duty Surface (G33, with photos labeled "Surface Mounted" and "Half-Mortise Mounted"), Mortise (G34, including the 320 for hollow metal doors) and Heavy-Duty Mortise (G35). The drawings print the profile size of surface models, the mortise required for mortise models and the channel the 320 fits:
| Model | Printed size, in. | Max drop, in. |
|---|---|---|
| 220 | 5/8 x 2-3/8 | 3/4 |
| 222 | 5/8 x 2-1/8 | 3/4 |
| 229 (stainless) | 5/8 x 2-9/16 | 3/4 |
| 420, 520, 680 | 3/4 x 2-1/4 | 3/4 |
| 225, 335 | Mortise 5/8 x 1-1/2 | 3/4 |
| 423, 683 | Mortise 3/4 x 1-11/16 | 3/4 |
| 320 | Channel 1-5/8 x 3/4 | 5/8 |
The seal is part of the number. The catalog lists the 220, 222 and 225 with neoprene (N), silicone (S) or a drop bar with nylon brush (WH); the 229 as 229NSS, 229SSS and 229WHSS; the 335 with N or S; the 320 with N, S or V (vinyl); the 420 and 520 with neoprene; the 423 with neoprene (423NA); the 680 and 683 with nylon brush and an EPDM insert. For the 320, page G34 adds "End Caps Not Available".
The plunger end and the hand
All four door bottom sheets above place the plunger (adjusting nut) on the hinge side. The 220/222/229SS, 225/335 and 423 sheets add: "plate with hex hole is used on plunger side, plate without hex hole is used on lock edge of door".
For the 220, 222 and 229SS, the sheet states: "Door Bottom is handed for RH doors from the factory; plunger is on the hinge side when mounted on the push side of the door." Some of our titles carry the hand, such as NGP 220NA 48 RH; see our door handing chart.
How much can be cut off
Pages G32-G35 and all four door bottom sheets say a door bottom 12 to 18 inches long can be cut down 1/2 inch, and one 20 inches or longer up to 1-1/2 inches; the 320 section on page G34 gives only the 1-1/2 inch limit. The 225/335 and 423 sheets say to cut the case "only from the non-plunger side", and the 320 sheet says "Do not cut from end with adjusting rod".
Replacement seals: what NGP lists separately
The 220/222/229SS, 225/335 and 423 sheets describe two seals that slide into the drop bar from the plunger end. Catalog pages G32-G35 and the Auto Door Bottoms list on ngp.com show only complete door bottoms, no seals as separate parts. In the whole catalog, the only item marked "Sold Separately" is the end cap for the 92 and 99 extended door shoes (pages G37, G41 and G42), printed without its own part number.
NGP door sweeps: profile, seal and length
The catalog shows NGP sweep profiles in dimensioned drawings. Sweeps and shoes in general are explained in our door gasketing guide. A selection of NGP sweeps, finish letter left off (198N stands for 198NA, 198NB and 198NDKB):
| Seal | Examples | Page |
|---|---|---|
| Neoprene | 200N, 198N, 197N | G43 |
| Silicone | 200S | G43 |
| Vinyl | 96V, 97V, 101V | G44 |
| Brush, concealed fastener | 673, 674, 678 | G44 |
| Nylon brush | 600, 601, C627 | G45 |
| Brush, EPDM insert | C697, D698, C699 | G46 |
| Stainless steel | 200NSS, 200SSS | G29 |
Rating symbols can carry footnotes, such as "*except 203N" on page G43 (legend on page G4). NGP's door sweep sheet starts with "Cut sweep to fit." Our titles give the length after the number, as in NGP 198NA 36".
NGP door shoes: profile, insert and door thickness
A selection of NGP door shoes and door bottom seals, finish letter left off:
| Catalog type | Models | Page |
|---|---|---|
| Extended | 92 and 99 series | G37 |
| Smooth vinyl | 5V, 6V, 12V, 19V | G38 |
| Neoprene | 15N, 113N, 118N | G39 |
| Double fin | 331 | G39 |
| Finned vinyl | 35V, 312V, 319V | G40 |
| Thermoplastic | 12T, 13T, 344 | G42 |
| Door bottom seal | 14R, 136N | G47 |
The 92 and 99 extended shoes are listed by insert, such as 92VA, which NGP names "Extended Door Shoe with Vinyl Insert"; the drawings dimension the 92 shoe 2 inches high and the 99 shoe 2-3/4 inches, with the insert below that. The thermoplastic door shoe pages give a maximum length of 48 inches, and the 331 is "Designed for Hollow Metal Doors with Inverted Bottom Channel", for 36 and 48 inch door widths (page G39).
On pages G36-G47, door thickness is part of the number only for the 14R door bottom seal, offered for 1-3/4 inch doors (14RA-1 3/4) and 2-1/4 inch doors (14RA-2 1/4). The drawings of U-shaped shoes such as the 5V, 19V, 92 and 99 are dimensioned 1-3/4 inches between the two sides.
The NGP 9590 is a different product: the Gapguard catalog (NGP-CAT-GAP-0926-A, page GAP9) calls it a "FIRE DOOR BOTTOM GAP SOLUTION", made of a stainless steel neoprene sweep (pull side), an intumescent shoe (push side) and end caps, in 36 and 48 inch lengths.
