National Guard Products (NGP) lite kits and door louvers are listed by model and size, such as L-FRA100 24 x 32 or L-700-RX 18 x 18. This guide explains what the models and the two numbers mean in NGP's documents, what glass the kits take, and what to give when you order.
The NGP documents behind this page
This page uses NGP's Lite Kits & Louvers catalog (NGP-CAT-LIT-0926-A) and Glass catalog (NGP-CAT-GLA-0926-A) on NGP's Catalogs page, plus the instructions and cut sheets on the model pages of NGP's Lite Kits & Louvers page. Page numbers are the printed ones. For NGP threshold and gasketing numbers, see our NGP model numbers guide.
NGP lite kit and louver models on our pages
| Model | NGP name | Page |
|---|---|---|
| L-FRA100 | Low Profile Lite Kit | L5 |
| LO-PRO | Low Profile Lite Kit | L7 |
| L-700-RX, AFDL | No Vision Door Louver | L37 |
| L-1900, FLDL | Fire-Rated Fusible Link Louver | L43 |
On ngp.com the LO-PRO, AFDL and FLDL are named as Anemostat products. NGP's glazed versions of the L-FRA100 include L-FRA100-TG-GT-118 (tempered glass), L-FRA100-PRO3-GT118 (Protect3 glass) and L-FRA100 PYRAN F-GT118 (Pyran F glass).
What the two numbers mean: order size and door cutout
NGP's How to Order example (page L4) gives the size as "Cutout Size (width x height)", and on the drawings of all four models the order size is the door cutout. On the lite kit drawings the glass is smaller than the order size by these amounts (inches):
| Model | Cut glass | Exposed glass |
|---|---|---|
| L-FRA100 | Size minus 1 | Size minus 2 |
| LO-PRO | Size minus 1 | Size minus 2 |
So a 24 x 32 L-FRA100 takes 23 x 31 inch cut glass and has 22 x 30 inches of exposed glass. The LO-PRO drawing calls these the glass size and the visible lite, and puts the outside of the frame at order size plus 1 inch. Both louver drawings read "Undersized 1/8" for Clearance"; on the L-1900 and FLDL the outside of the frame (O.D.) is order size plus 1/2 inch.
Two older NGP installation sheets on our site, marked 10.14 (English and Spanish), give the same size rules as the current catalog: L-FRA100 and L-GLF100-SP-TB (PDF), a thru-bolted kit for 3/8 to 1-1/4 inch glass whose cut glass is order size less 5/16 inch and exposed glass less 1-1/16 inch (catalog page L16). Their fire-rated glass and tape notes differ from NGP's current sheets, marked 8.26; where they differ, go by the current sheets.
NGP low profile lite kits: frame and glass thickness
According to pages L5 and L7, the L-FRA100 is 18 gauge cold rolled steel with welded reinforcing clips at the corners, the LO-PRO 20 gauge cold rolled steel; both have mitered and welded corners. Both are for 1-3/4 inch doors and 3/16, 1/4 or 5/16 inch glass, with a 3/8 inch glazing space, in uneven and fractional sizes from 3 inches to 88 inches (L-FRA100) or 86 inches (LO-PRO) in width or height. Glass and glazing tape are an option on the plain kits. The glazed L-FRA100 versions, as NGP describes them:
- TG: 1/4 inch clear heat treated glass, "NOT Fire-Rated" and "Can NOT be Cut After Manufacturing".
- PRO3: 1/4 inch (6 mm) Protect3, fire-protective safety-wired glass (page GL6).
- PYRAN F: 3/16 inch (5 mm) Pyran F glass ceramic.
- Tape in all three: closed cell PVC foam, 3/8 inch wide x 1/8 inch thick, adhesive both sides (L-GT-118, page GL14).
Fire-rated doors and glass: what NGP prints
- Page L2: "Lite Kits installed in fire-rated doors require fire-rated glass and glazing tape."
- Page L2: "IBC requires all individual glazed areas in swinging doors to be impact safety-rated to comply with the CPSC 16CFR 1201 Category I or II."
- The L-FRA100 installation sheet (8.26): "Maximum size is determined by the glass listing (in doors) and door manufacturers listing."
NGP no vision and fusible link door louvers
The L-700-RX and AFDL (page L37) are no vision louvers for 1-3/4 inch doors: 18 gauge cold rolled steel, inverted "V" design, 24 gauge steel blades and 55% free area, from 6 wide x 4 high to 46 wide x 88 high (inches). The optional aluminum insect screen is "Installed on Exterior Side Unless Requested Otherwise".
The L-1900 and FLDL (page L43) are headed "FOR 1 3/4" THICK DOORS UP TO 90 MINUTES", with the line "Blades Close When Activated By Fire/Heat". They have an 18 gauge cold rolled steel frame and adjustable Z blades, a stainless steel spring, a 165 degree F fusible link and 40% free area, in whole inch sizes from 10 x 6 to 24 x 30. Their installation sheet (9.25) cautions: "NGP is not responsible for customer painted louvers, due to possible changes to the operating condition during a fire."
Finishes
All four models list a Gray Primer (GPZ) powder coat finish, with other colors as an option. Page L3 lists the standard colors GPZ, T tan, BPR beige primer, DKB dark bronze, PTY putty and CAB California bronze; here DKB is a powder coat color. In our titles GPZ appears as Prime Coat or Gray Primer. For zinc electroplating under the powder coat (an option on pages L5, L7 and L37), page L4 says to write Zinc EL-Plate and the color on the order.
What to give when you order
NGP's How to Order example (page L4) has five columns: quantity, model number, finish, cutout size (width x height) and options. Have ready:
- Model, with the glass version if you want glass.
- Size: width x height of the door cutout.
- Door thickness: these models are drawn for 1-3/4 inch doors.
- Glass thickness, if it is not 3/16, 1/4 or 5/16 inch: for its L-FRA100-SP (page L8), NGP asks for the glass thickness, and the door thickness if it is not 1-3/4 inch.
- Finish: GPZ, DKB or another color from page L3.
- Options, such as Torx security screws or a louver insect screen.
- For a fire-rated door: the rating on its label.
