Door Gasketing Explained: Perimeter Seals, Adhesive Gasketing, Door Sweeps and Door Shoes (Pemko and Zero)

Door gasketing seals the gaps around a door: along the head and jambs of the frame and at the bottom of the door. This page shows how Pemko and Zero International name the types (perimeter or head and jamb gasketing, adhesive gasketing, door sweeps, door shoes) and how to read numbers such as 303AS84, S88W17, 8198AA and 188S.

Types of door gasketing: head and jamb, door sweeps, door shoes

Sources: Zero's Door Sealing Systems catalog (Rev. 07/25), linked from Allegion's Zero perimeter seals page, and the Markar and Pemko Catalog (back cover marked 09/26); see also Pemko's gasketing page.

  • Head and jamb gasketing is installed along the top (head) and sides (jamb) of a door frame (Zero, page 67). Pemko's catalog section is perimeter gasketing; it describes the standard models, such as the 303, as rigid jamb weatherstrip (page 172).
  • Adhesive gasketing. Pemko's S88, S773 and S44 are adhesive-backed silicone seals, drawn on the hinge jamb, header and strike jamb (page 188). Zero's name is self-adhesive weatherstripping (page 138).
  • Door sweeps are installed at the bottom of a door, usually on the interior or exterior face, to seal the gap between the door and the floor (Zero, page 67).
  • Door shoes are U-shaped or L-shaped and fit around the bottom edge of a door, which typically requires removing the door from its hinges (Zero, page 67). Pemko's 216 is on catalog page 143.
  • Brush seals. Pemko's brush seals are densely compressed nylon filaments in an aluminum retainer (page 164). Zero's nylon brush pages note: "Not effective against water penetration" (page 77).

Automatic door bottoms are covered in our Pemko automatic door bottom guide; thresholds and NGP numbers in our NGP model number guide.

Seal materials: silicone, neoprene, vinyl, brush

Pemko prints the seal as an insert letter after the finish letter. S, PK, V, R, NB and P are explained in the Pemko guide linked above; catalog page 12 adds N (neoprene or EPDM), E (solid EPDM), SB (soft brush), Q (kerf-in foam) and M (magnetic). Its ANSI/BHMA table groups Eco-V (V) with vinyl (page 16).

Zero's catalog sorts sweeps, shoes and head and jamb gasketing by seal material, such as synthetic rubber blend, polypropylene brush (pile), nylon brush, vinyl and silicone.

How to read Pemko gasketing numbers: 303AS84, S88W17, S773BL21

The catalog's ordering page (page 11) asks for profile number, finish, insert and size or length:

NumberReads as
303AS84303, A mill finish aluminum, S silicone, 84 in.
303AS3684Same, one 36 in. and two 84 in. pieces
18100CNB4818100, C clear anodized, NB nylon brush, 48 in.
S88W17S88, W white, 17 ft coil
S773BL21S773, BL black, 21 ft coil
  • Adhesive gasketing numbers, in the catalog's examples, have no insert letter and give the length in feet; their letters are colors (pages 11-12): BL black, C clear, D dark brown, GR light gray, TAN tan, W white. On metal products C is clear anodized and D dark bronze anodized aluminum.
  • Seal depth is printed on each standard perimeter gasketing drawing; the catalog's example is the 303 with a 1/4 inch seal, which can seal up to a 1/4 inch gap (page 172).

Where the catalog says an adhesive seal begins compressing (page 188; a selection, not the full list):

S88Compression bulb1/4 in.
S773Triple-fin design3/8 in.
S44Designed for tighter frames5/16 in.

How to read Zero numbers: 8192AA, 8198AA, 188S

Zero's Gasketing Order Guide (page 68) has six fields: model, finish, options, length or width, height, metric. Its example is 39 A 48 in.: the 39 sweep in aluminum mill finish.

  • Finishes include A (mill finish), AA (clear anodized; C at Pemko), BK (black anodized) and D (dark bronze anodized).
  • Options: S is a door set (width given first, head and jamb only); PSA is pressure sensitive adhesive.
  • 8198AA is the 8198 nylon brush sweep, "Surface-mounted with rain drip" (page 78), in clear anodized aluminum.
  • 8192AA is the 8192 nylon brush sweep (page 77). The catalog prints the 8192 again under split meeting stile gasketing (page 118); our store names the 36 inch length a door sweep and the 96 inch length a meeting stile.
  • 188S BK 17, the example in the Weatherstripping Order Guide (page 131), is the 188S silicone seal in black on a 17 ft roll; our part number 188SBK204 gives that length in inches.

Fire, smoke and sound ratings: check the exact model

Both catalogs print test and rating symbols model by model and explain them at the front (Pemko pages 13-14, Zero page 5).

The Pemko catalog states (page 8): "Pemko S88 and S773 silicone seals are also smoke and fire rated gaskets that meet UBC7-2 positive pressure testing and are Category G gaskets for edge sealing systems for use with Category B doors." A fire-rated opening is an assembly of labeled door, labeled frame and listed hardware, so a rating printed for a gasket does not by itself show that your opening complies.

Pemko S771, S772 and S773: tech specs and instructions (PDF)

These sheets date from 2008 and 2010 and differ from the current catalog. The S772 sheet lists finishes D and W; the current catalog adds BL and C (pages 158, 189 and 193). The S773 sheet lists a dark brown S773D; the current catalog lists S773 in BL, GR and W (page 188). The S771 sheet gives the type as "Self-Adhesive Meeting Stile Seal"; the current catalog lists S771 and S772 under adhesive astragal/meeting stile seals (page 158). Both tech specs carry the line: "Category J - Doors - gasketing that has been tested on a positive pressure fire door and frame but is not required for the door to obtain its fire door rating."

The S773 sheet says the product must be used within 6 months of purchase and stored between 50 and 100 degrees F; for installation, follow the sheet.
