Replacing an ABH Door Stop: Wall, Dome and Floor Stops (AB403, AB409, AB441H, AB481H) and Their Fastener Packs

The rubber has split, the base spins on a stripped screw, or a floor stop is gone and only the holes are left. To order the ABH replacement you need to know where the old stop was fastened, what its bumper and base look like and which screws held it. ABH can sell the same stop with different fastener packs under different numbers, so the screws matter as much as the shape.

What to read off the old stop

  • Where it mounts: wall or floor.
  • The bumper face: concave or convex.
  • The base size and the height or projection, as ABH prints them for that model.
  • For a floor stop, whether the door has a threshold.
  • The screws and anchors, if they are still in the wall or floor.

ABH wall stops AB400 to AB416

In ABH's Price List No. 15 (version 2.11), each wall stop from AB400 to AB416 has one row naming its body, bumper and fastener pack; more wall stops and holders follow on later rows.

ABH abbreviates the screws. Where ABH's page for the AB480H floor stop says FH WS and FH MS, the AB480H cut sheet (PDF) writes flat head wood screws and flat head machine screws.

AB403, AB404 and AB405

ABH's page for the three gives each a concave bumper, a 2-7/16 inch base and a 1 inch projection. The AB403 is wrought and comes with a #6 x 1-1/2 inch FH SMS and a plastic toggle. The AB404 and AB405 are cast: the AB404 with a #8 x 1 inch RH WS and plastic anchor, the AB405 with a #8-32 x 1 inch TH MS and anchor. The convex AB400, AB401 and AB402 use the same three packs in that order, and ABH lists a security Torx screw option for both groups.

AB409 and AB426

The AB409 is a wrought concave stop with a 2-1/2 inch base, a 1 inch projection and a #8 x 1-1/4 inch TH SMS with plastic toggle. One spec line on its ABH page reads Bumper: Convex, but the title and the price list say concave; we follow the price list. The AB426 is solid cast and concave, 1-7/8 inches in diameter with a 1 inch projection; its ABH page lists a #8 x 1-1/4 inch TH SMS with plastic toggle and anchor.

Dome stops: low, high and the AB441H

ABH lists dome stops with the floor stops. The low dome AB440 and AB441 stand 1-1/8 inches high on a 1-7/8 inch base; ABH marks the AB440 for doors without thresholds. The high dome AB442 stands 1-1/2 inches high and is marked for doors with thresholds.

Again the pack sets the number. The price list gives the AB440 and AB442 a WS and plastic anchor, and the AB441 and AB443 a WS with plastic anchor plus an MS with anchor. Each of the four also comes as an EXP version with an exterior mounting pack and a T version with Torx screws, such as AB442EXP or AB441T.

The AB441H, which ABH calls a cast universal dome stop, is 1-11/16 inches high on a 1-7/8 inch base. ABH marks it for doors without thresholds and gives it a stabilizer pin. Its page lists a #12 x 1-1/4 inch FH WS with plastic anchor and a #12-24 x 1 inch FH MS with anchor, and states that a threaded concrete anchor is included. ABH lists it in US26D (satin chrome) and custom finishes; see our finish codes chart.

To raise a dome, the price list has the AB444, a 3/8 inch cast riser for the AB440 and AB441, and the AB449 carpet riser for the AB440 and AB442, ordered by thickness from 1/4 inch to 1 inch. The AB441CU is a dome stop sold with a cast riser.

Floor stops: AB470, AB480H, AB481H and AB465

The AB470 and AB471 are floor stops with a bumper, 3 inches high on a 2-1/2 inch base. The price list packs the AB470 with a WS and plastic anchor and the AB471 with an SMS and plastic anchor plus a stud and anchor. Both come as EXP versions; the AB470H hook and AB470E eye are listed for the series.

On ABH's cut sheet the heavy duty AB480H, AB481H, AB481HEXP and AB481HT all have a base 1-3/4 inches long and 2-1/2 inches wide and a 2-1/4 inch projection. The fasteners differ, as printed:

  • AB480H: three #12-24 x 1-1/4 inch flat head wood screws, three plastic anchors
  • AB481H: three #12-24 x 1 inch flat head machine screws, three anchors
  • AB481HEXP: the same product as the AB481H, with an exterior mounting pack
  • AB481HT: the same product as the AB481H, with Torx screws

The cut sheet lists the AB481H and AB481HT in US26D only. Without the H, the AB480 and AB481 have the same base size and, on ABH's page, a 1-5/8 inch projection.

The AB465 heavy duty door stop, also a floor stop, has a 3-1/4 inch base and stands 2-5/8 inches high, with a 1/2 x 4-1/2 inch lag bolt and shield for the body and a #8-32 x 3/8 inch RH MS for the cap.

Door holders: AB490, AB491 and AB494

If the old unit also held the door open, look at the holders ABH lists with its wall stops: the AB490 door holder and stop and the AB491-RKW and AB494-RKW automatic holders. Both automatic holders come in T versions with Torx screws and in R and S versions with R or S fasteners. ABH's price list does not say what the R and S packs contain, so match the letter from the old order or ask us. ABH's AB494 page calls for 3-3/4 inches or less between the door and the wall.

Wall, floor or overhead?

Our guide to door stops and holders compares wall, floor, overhead and electromagnetic types; our ABH overhead stop and holder templates cover ABH overhead stops. The ABH products we offer are on our ABH Manufacturing brand page, other stops in door stops and bumpers.
