ABH Kick, Mop and Armor Plates (PP0050, PP0062, PP0125): Thickness, Sizes, Finishes and Screws

A door schedule calls for an ABH PP0062 kick plate, or a reorder shows PP0125 where the last one said PP0050. What changes between these three numbers is the thickness. The three ABH cut sheets list the same standard heights, widths, finishes, mounting options and fasteners, so once the thickness is settled, the rest of the order is the same for each.

PP0050, PP0062 and PP0125: the number is the thickness

ABH names the three series by duty:

ModelThicknessABH name
PP0050.050 in.Standard Duty
PP0062.062 in.Heavy Duty
PP0125.125 in.Extra Heavy Duty

Each series has its own cut sheet on abhmfg.com: PP0050 (PDF), PP0062 (PDF) and PP0125 (PDF). If the page 1 heading of the PP0062 or PP0125 sheet shows .050 in., go by the size tables on page 2, which give each series its own thickness. The cut sheets give no rule for choosing one duty over another. When a specification names a series, order that series.

Mop plate, kick plate or armor plate: which height

In the cut sheets each plate type has its own standard heights, the same for all three thicknesses:

PlateStandard heights
Mop plate4 and 6 in.
Kick plate8, 10, 12 and 16 in.
Armor plate34 in.

If you need a stainless steel armor plate, ABH's standard height is 34 inches, in five widths from 22 to 46 inches. The ordering pages at the back of ABH Price List No 15 give wider ranges for common uses: mop plates 4 to 6 inches high, kick plates 8 to 24, armor plates 26 to 48, plus a stretcher plate at 6 to 8 inches. The standard plate tables in the same price list have no separate stretcher plate line.

ABH's product pages describe the purpose of each type. Mop plates protect the bottom of the door from moisture and cleaning equipment, kick plates take scuffs and knocks from foot traffic and carts, and armor plates reach higher up the door where carts, gurneys or material handling cause heavy abuse. For the height ranges other makers print, see our guide to kick, push and pull plate sizes.

Standard widths and how a size is written

Every standard height comes in five widths: 22, 28, 34, 40 and 46 inches. Seven heights and five widths make 35 standard sizes in each series.

ABH writes the height first, as in 10"H X 34"W, and our product names use the same order. The Part Number on our cards, for example ABH_PP005010X34US32D, is our own number. It combines the model PP0050, the size 10X34 and the finish US32D.

For a door that needs another size, the price list has a custom ordering page. It allows plates up to 48 x 48 inches, with a width of at least 22 and at most 48 inches. Custom sizes cannot be ordered through our cart. To ask about one, email [email protected] with the plate height, the finish and any notches or holes. The cut sheets and the plate pages of the price list give no rule for working out the plate width from the door width, so if you are unsure, send the door width as well.

Finishes and the limit on 16 and 34 inch plates

The cut sheets list 13 finish codes and note that custom finishes are available. The names below are the ones in ABH's finish table:

CodeABH finish name
US3Polished Brass
US4Satin Brass
US5Satin Oxidized Brass
US10Satin Bronze
US10BSatin Oil Rubbed Bronze
US15Satin Nickel Plated
US26Polished Chrome Plated
US26DSatin Chrome Plated
US28Clear Anodized Aluminum
US32Bright Stainless Steel
US32DSatin Stainless Steel
US32316Polished 316 Alloy
US32D316Satin 316 Alloy

One limit is printed right under the finish list: US15, US26 and US26D are not available for plates 16 or 34 inches high. A 16 inch kick plate or a 34 inch armor plate needs one of the other finishes. For the BHMA numbers behind the codes from US3 to US32D, see our door hardware finish codes chart. The price list gives 629316 and 630316 for the two 316 alloy finishes.

Screws, adhesive and countersunk holes

A plate is either screwed on or mounted with adhesive. The standard fastener in the cut sheets is a #6 x 5/8 inch oval head metal screw (SMS). In the price list, plate screws come in packs of 20:

  • SMS - #6 x 5/8 inch oval head metal screw, the standard pack
  • SDS - #6 x 3/4 inch self-drilling, thread forming machine screw
  • SEC - #6 x 3/4 inch pin-in-Torx security fasteners

One pack is listed per plate for plates 4 to 14 inches high, two packs for plates 15 to 48 inches high, in both cases up to 48 inches wide.

The cut sheets describe the self-drilling screws as used for hollow metal or steel doors, with no pre-drilling required. They also list a tamper-resistant option for public or high-abuse areas, and a countersunk screw option (CSK) for plates with countersunk holes instead of the standard beveled holes, still typically with #6 screws matched to the finish. The PP0050 cut sheet also lists B4E, beveled 4 edges, among its features.

Notches, extra holes and rounded corners

ABH's product pages list the same five options for PP0050, PP0062 and PP0125, and the price list prints them on its plate options page:

  • Self-adhesive mount
  • Hardware notch, listed for armor plates
  • Louver notch
  • Added mounting holes, with the quantity and location specified
  • Rounded corners

For a notch or added holes, have the positions measured on the door before you contact us.

Plates on fire rated doors

Under features, all three cut sheets print this line, quoted here word for word:

UL Listed for use on Fire Rated Doors for Stainless Steel, Up to and Including 48" x 48"

That is ABH's wording, and it names stainless steel and a size limit. If your plate goes on a labeled door in another material or size, ask us before you order.
