ABH Continuous Hinge Numbers Explained: A110HD079, A210HD083 and A500078 - Series, Duty and Length

You have a number like A110HD079, A210HD083 or A500083 from a hardware schedule or an old order, and you need the same hinge again. Read it in three parts: the series, any duty letters and a three-digit length code. The series also tells you the mount and which ABH instruction sheet to open.

How to read an ABH continuous hinge number

In ABH's current Price List No 15, each hinge row starts with the series and carries a three-digit length code:

  • A110HD079: series A110, a full mortise aluminum geared hinge with no inset, flush mount; HD for heavy duty; 079 for a 79 inch hinge.
  • A210HD083: series A210, a full surface aluminum geared hinge listed as swing clear; HD; 083 for 83 inches.
  • A500078: series A500, a full mortise stainless steel pin and barrel hinge, 14 gauge, 1/8 inch inset; no duty letters; 078 for a 78-3/4 inch hinge.

ABH's BHMA certification sheet (PDF) defines the duty letters. HD denotes a heavy duty hinge, and LL a heavy duty hinge with extra screw holes for the lead in lead-lined doors. The A110HD and A110LL cut sheet (PDF) gives a 450 lb maximum door weight, and 1,000 lb for lead-lined doors.

Other letters can sit inside the number: WT (wide throw) in A110WTHD079, RB (raised barrel) in A500RB083. Count the digits on stainless numbers. A5500083 is the 12 gauge A5500 in the 083 length, while A500083 is the 14 gauge A500.

Length codes: read the inches from ABH's table

The code is close to the length, not always equal to it. In the stainless rows, 078 means 78-3/4 inches, and the aluminum A120HD rows list 079 as 79-3/8 inches.

Which mount do I have? ABH series by mount

The price list groups the hinges by mount. ABH's product pages and installation sheets also call its full mortise hinges full concealed, and its BHMA sheet calls them edge mounted. Our door hinge types guide explains the mount names.

  • Full mortise, aluminum: A110HD, A110WTHD, A111HD, A111WTHD, A120HD, A130HD, A135HD, A140HD, A150HD, A160HD, A170HD, A240HD, A260HD, A270HD, A280HD and A410HD; the price list has LL rows for eleven of them.
  • Full mortise, stainless: 14 gauge A500, A505, A510, A511, A515, A525, A526 and A529; 12 gauge A5500, A5505 and A5515; plus RB, AC and WT versions of some.
  • Full surface: aluminum A210HD, A570HD, A571HD and A575HD; stainless A502, A512 and A501.
  • Half surface: aluminum A211HD, A213HD, A450HD, A460HD, A530HD, A540HD and A550HD; stainless A503.
  • Half mortise: aluminum A520HD; stainless A504 and A506.
  • Double acting: aluminum A507HD; stainless A508, center hung.

Swing clear has no heading of its own in the price list. It appears in the descriptions of A210HD, A211HD, A410HD, A410LL and the stainless A510, A511, A525, A526 and A529, and ABH's BHMA sheet has swing clear edge mounted groups.

Finishes

On ABH's pages for these models, the aluminum hinges come in US28 (clear), 314 (dark bronze) and 315 (black), the stainless ones in US32 and US32D. Our finish codes chart explains US28, US32 and US32D.

Option codes

This selection comes from ABH's pages for A210HD and the eight series in the inset table; All means all nine.

CUT, SPLICECut to custom length; spliced hingeAll
SLSheared leafAll except A570HD
LLLead-lined cover, door leaf onlySurface mounted aluminum

So LL has two meanings: in A110LL079 it is the lead-lined hinge model, on a surface hinge the option for a lead-lined door leaf cover. ABH's aluminum pages give the fire ratings with and without FR. For electrical options, follow ABH's instructions for the option you order.

For CUT and SPLICE the price list asks for the length and the handing. ABH's half surface sheet says the hinge becomes handed after cutting, and its full concealed sheet says not all hinges do. Our door handing chart explains the hands. For one model ABH is direct: "ABH DOES NOT RECOMMEND CUTTING THE A507 IN THE FIELD".

BHMA Grade 1 on ABH's certification sheet

The sheet lists models under the line "ANSI/BHMA A156.26-2017 Certified Continuous Hinges", every group marked Grade 1. It names, among others, A110 (HD and LL), A210HD, A530HD and A570HD, and the stainless A500 and A505. It lists model numbers only, with no lengths or options, and A575HD, A5500 and A507 are not on it.

Which ABH instruction sheet goes with which hinge

The A500 sheet warns that failure to use "the fasteners supplied by ABH will void the UL fire rating", and the A5500 sheet reads "FAILURE TO USE THE FASTENERS SUPPLIED WILL VOID THE UL FIRE RATED LISTING". A520HD, A120HD, A110WTHD and A111WTHD have their own templates on abhmfg.com.
