ABH Offset Pivots: Which Top, Bottom and Intermediate Pivot Goes With the 0117, 0147, 0195 and 07212 Sets

A worn pivot on an ABH offset-hung door does not always mean a new set. For the 0117, 0147 and 0195, ABH's cut sheets say each pivot in the set can be purchased separately. To order one you need the set, the offset, the finish and usually the hand.

Rixson uses similar numbers (117, 147, 180) for its own pivots, covered in our Rixson pivots guide.

Offset or center hung?

ABH's offset pivot memo puts the pivot point in front of the door with the knuckle visible. The offset is normally 3/4 inch or 1-1/2 inch, and offset pivots are single acting only. On a center hung pivot the pivot point is centered in the door thickness, and the parts are different (see our guide to door hinge and pivot types).

The memo gives two examples for the 1-1/2 inch offset: a decorative panel on the push side of the door, or a trim projection that keeps the door from opening 180 degrees. ABH lists separate parts for that offset, such as the 0147-1.5 set with a 0180-1.5 top and a 0147-1.5B bottom.

What is in an ABH offset pivot set

Take the 0117. Its cut sheet lists the 0180 top pivot, mortised into the header and the top of the door, and the 0117B bottom pivot, mortised into the floor and the bottom of the door. The 019 intermediate pivot is not included.

ABH's product page for the 0180 lists it as the top pivot of the 0117, 0117.25, 0117.50, 0147, 0165, 0173 and 0195 sets, and for use with a floor closer. In ABH's price list, bottom pivots sold alone carry the set number plus B, such as the 0117B, 0147B or 0195B.

ABH pivot sets by door weight and width

ABH's offset pivot comparison chart gives each set a maximum door weight and width, for a standard 1-3/4 inch door (other thicknesses: contact ABH). Nine of its eleven sets:

SetMax weight, widthBottom pivot
0117300 lb, 42 inMortised into floor
0117.25250 lb, 42 inSide jamb
0117.50650 lb, 48 inMortised into floor
0147600 lb, 48 inOn the floor
0173150 lb, 36 inInto concrete floor
0195450 lb, 48 inSide jamb
0147-1.5350 lb, 48 inOn the floor
L01171750 lb, 48 inMortised into floor
L0147800 lb, 48 inOn the floor

ABH's pivot set configurations memo adds that the capacity of a set depends on the intermediate pivots used with it. The two sets left out of the table differ: the 0165 has a 0180 top and two 019s but no bottom pivot, for doors with a floor closer or without a bottom pivot, and the 0547 has two 019s and a 0147B bottom but no top.

When ABH calls for an 019 intermediate pivot

The chart and the 0117 cut sheet agree: one intermediate pivot for a door 60 to 90 inches tall, and one more for each additional 30 inches. The chart and ABH's product pages mark at least one as required for the 0117.50, 0147, 0147-1.5, L0117 and L0147 (the 0147 cut sheet says recommended). For the 0117, 0117.25, 0173 and 0195 the chart says recommended.

The intermediate is ordered separately, except in the 0165 and 0547. The 019 mortises into the side jamb and the hinge edge of the door. The 0147-1.5 takes the 019-1.5, and the lead lined L0117 and L0147 take the L0180 top and the L019 intermediate.

Does LH or RH matter?

For most parts, yes. ABH's price list has RH and LH versions of the 0117, 0147, 0195 and 07212 sets, of the 0117B, 0147B and 0195B bottom pivots and of the 019 and 07212INT intermediates, and their cut sheets say to specify the hand. The 0180 top pivot is the exception: its cut sheet says non-handed and the price list shows no -RH or -LH. Give the hand of the door (see our door handing chart) with any offset set, bottom or intermediate pivot.

07212 sets and the 07212INT

The 07212SET pairs a 07212 top with a 07212V bottom pivot. The 07212VSET has a 07212VB bottom and a jamb mounted top, which ABH describes for openings where header mounting is not possible. Both are listed for doors up to 200 lb, and the 07212SET cut sheet adds a 48 inch maximum width and 1-3/4 inch doors.

For taller or heavier doors ABH lists the 07212INT for the 07212SET and the 07212VINT for the 07212VSET. The 07212INT cut sheet says to use one for every additional 100 lb. Other sets in this numbering, such as the 07215 and 07222, have their own INT pivots.

Electrified intermediate pivots

ABH's 3/4 inch electrified intermediates include the E019 (power transfer), E019U (two wires, for high inrush), EL019 (lead lined doors), CM019 (concealed door position switch, no power transfer) and CME019 (switch plus power transfer), each in RH and LH. Leave the wiring to a qualified installer working from ABH's documents for the model and local code.

Extended spindle, extended pin and security fasteners

Besides B (bottom pivot only), the 0117, 0147 and 0195 cut sheets list EXT-SPIN, an extended spindle for the bottom pivot, and EXT-PIN, an extended pin for the top pivot, both for additional clearance. SEC adds Torx security fasteners. The extension bottom spindle memos for the 0117, 0147 and 0195 give each length its own ABH drawing number.

Center hung: 0320 top pivot, 0127 and 0128 sets

ABH's 0127 and 0128 center hung sets share the 0320 top pivot. The 0127 bottom pivot goes into the side jamb; the 0128 bottom pivot sits on the finished floor. ABH lists them for doors up to 200 lb and 250 lb respectively, 42 inches wide and 102 inches tall, both non-handed with no intermediate pivot required. ABH overhead stops in the 1000, 4000 and 9000 series are sized differently for offset and center hung doors; see our ABH overhead stop guide.
