When you order a Burns door pull, push plate or vertical pull, two codes decide what you get. The Burns model number gives the style and size; the finish is a separate Burns code. Below we read both with Burns' full line catalog, vertical pull brochure and website, so you can pick the right variant among our Burns pages.
What Burns makes
Burns Manufacturing, Inc. of Erie, Pennsylvania makes architectural door trim: door pulls, push and pull plates, push bars, vertical pulls, kick plates, door stops and other door accessories. Most of our Burns items are vertical pulls, pull plates and door pulls. Each Burns page is one model in one finish, named at the end of the title.
Burns door pulls: the letter is the center-to-center size
For straight and round pulls, the catalog says the code letter after the part number of each pull gives the center-to-center dimension of that item: A = 6 inches, B = 8, C = 10, D = 12 and G = 18. The offset pull tables use the same letters.
So the 26B is a 1 inch round pull on 8 inch centers; the 26G has 18 inch centers. In the catalog tables, each M number (M26D, M39G, M422 and others) is the 1-1/4 inch version of the 1 inch item without the M. Other codes:
- HCP after the number: 2-1/2 inch clearance (catalog example: 26B x HCP).
- 39 and 39-1: offset pulls with a 90 degree and a 45 degree offset.
- 10 to 19: cast pulls.
Example: our Burns 26B round door pull in satin stainless steel (8 inch centers).
Push plate and pull plate numbers
For push plates, the series gives the plate type: 50 series .050 inch thick, 70 series .125 inch, both with 4 beveled edges; 80 series .125 inch with a round bevel top and bottom; 90 series .125 inch plastic laminate. The last digit gives the size the same way in each series (the 90 series has no 91 or 92; 58 is a forged raised plate, 3-1/2 x 15 only):
| Last digit | Plate size (inches) |
|---|---|
| 0 | 3 x 12 |
| 1 | 3-1/2 x 14 |
| 2 | 3 x 15 |
| 3 | 3-1/2 x 15 |
| 4 | 4 x 16 |
| 5 | 4 x 20 |
| 6 | 6 x 16 |
| 7 | 8 x 16 |
A pull plate number joins a plate number and a pull number. The 5426B pull plate is the 54 plate (4 x 16 inches, .050 thick) with the 26B pull, and our page lists both parts in its Attributes (Plate# 54, Pull# 26B). Plate options have letter codes, for example CC (cut for a 1-1/4 inch cylinder) or RC (round corners).
Push bars and push-pull sets
The 422 is a 1 inch round push bar, the 422-3/4 a 3/4 inch bar and the M422 a 1-1/4 inch bar. The catalog asks for the center-to-center dimension (the door width minus the width of one stile; on solid doors, the door width minus 5 inches), a wood, metal or glass door and its thickness, the finish and the handing of the door (see our door handing chart).
A set number names the push bar and the pull: the 422 x 26B push/pull bar set is a 422 push bar with a 26B pull on 8 inch centers.
VP Series vertical pulls
In a VP number, the first of the four digits is the series. The brochure names them 4000 Vertical, 5000 Collar, 6000 Wood, 7000 Flat Oval and Elliptical Oval, and 8000 Square; VP9000 are locking pulls. The 4000 series in the brochure:
| Numbers | Style |
|---|---|
| VP4220-4222 | Round profile, top and bottom radius bends |
| VP4240-4242 and VP4340-4342 | Straight post mount |
| VP4250-4252 and VP4350-4352 | Offset post mount |
| VP4260-4262 and VP4360-4362 | Straight post mount, step-down posts |
| VP4270-4272 and VP4370-4372 | Straight post mount, oversize posts |
In the rows with two ranges, VP42 numbers have square ends and VP43 numbers round ends. The last digit gives the diameter: 0, 1 and 2 stand for 1, 1-1/4 and 1-1/2 inches, and in the oversize post rows for 3/4, 1 and 1-1/4 inches.
Burns' page for the VP4260 asks you to specify both the center-to-center and the overall dimension, and recommends an intermediate post for spans over 80 inches (suffix IP). Other suffixes in the brochure: SF split finish (polished ends, satin center), PC powder coat, W wood (6000 series) and L leather wrapped.
On our vertical pull pages (4000 to 8000 series) the title adds the diameter or bar size, a length range and the finish, as on the VP4260 in satin stainless steel, 1 inch. Our VP4260 pages cover five length ranges, from up to 20 inches to 85 to 108 inches. Have both dimensions ready and ask us which page fits.
Burns finish codes
Burns prints a finish as the older US code followed by the BHMA number, for example US32D/630. The table follows Burns' finishes page, with the names from Burns' product pages that also end our titles.
| Burns code | Finish name | Base metal |
|---|---|---|
| US3/605 | Bright Brass | Brass |
| US4/606 | Satin Brass | Brass |
| US5/609 | Antique Brass | Brass |
| US10/612 | Satin Bronze | Bronze |
| US10B/613 | Dark Bronze Oxidized | Bronze or brass |
| US26/625 | Bright Chrome Plated | Brass |
| US26D/626 | Satin Chrome Plated | Brass |
| US28/628 | Satin Anodized Aluminum | Aluminum |
| US32/629 | Bright Stainless Steel | Stainless steel |
| US32D/630 | Satin Stainless Steel | Stainless steel |
| Flat Black | Flat Black Powder Coat | Stainless steel or aluminum |
| Dark Bronze | Dark Bronze Powder Coat | Stainless steel or aluminum |
Burns prints no BHMA number for the powder coats, and not every finish is offered on every model: Burns' page for the 100 cylinder pull lists no chrome finish; the 10 cast pull lists both.
To match another brand's hardware, check each maker's finish chart and the base metal. The color name or number alone is not enough; our door hardware finish codes chart explains why.
The ANSI column in Burns' tables gives codes such as J401 (pulls) and J501 (push bars). Such codes name a product type in ANSI/BHMA A156.6, the door trim standard; they are not a grade.
What to have ready when you order
The model number and finish from our page title, and the door material (wood, metal or glass) and thickness: Burns supplies fasteners to suit the door and asks to be told when it is not 1-3/4 inches thick. For push bars, add the center-to-center dimension and the handing; for vertical pulls, both dimensions.
