CRL Pass-Thru Windows, Speak-Thrus and Deal Trays: Sharyn or Self-Closing Service Window, 834 or SST7, Tray or Drawer

You are fitting out a counter where staff and customers deal through glass: a pharmacy pickup, a ticket booth, a teller line. The window has to open, the clerk has to hear the customer, and cash and papers have to cross the counter. C.R. Laurence (CRL) makes a piece for each job. Here is how the pieces differ and which CRL document goes with which.

Frameless Sharyn pass-thru or sliding service window

CRL's specification calls the Sharyn a frameless interior pass-thru sliding service window. The sliding panels hang from clamp-on roller assemblies that CRL calls "No Hole", and the side walls of the double track header hide the rollers, so no valance cover is needed. In CRL's instructions, the standard kits come with two glass panels and fit openings of 36 x 48 or 48 x 48 inches, width by height. They also include a push button lock and bumpers, which CRL adds for soft closing.

The DW Deluxe and SCDW Self-Closing service windows are framed units. CRL ships them fully assembled, factory glazed or ready to glaze, and designs them for heavy-duty commercial use such as drive-thru or walk-up service. The DW opens and closes by hand. The SCDW opens by hand and closes itself, powered by a hydraulic mechanism concealed in the header.

On the service windows, a half-track leaves no track under the sliding panel, for clear passage across the counter. The stainless steel step-sill has a water-dam, and CRL offers it for exterior applications. CRL gives the DW4844X0GDU a 47-1/2 x 43-3/4 inch frame that fits a 48 x 44 inch opening, and the SCDW3636X0GA a frame that fits a 36 x 36 inch opening.

Before you order, read two CRL notes. Both service window pages warn: "Heavy Duty Service Windows; not designed to be primary building seal for severe weather conditions." The Sharyn instructions say: "Sharyn is designed for 1/4" (6 mm) tempered glass only. Counter provided by others."

XX, OX and XO: reading the letters

The Sharyn specification defines them: X is a sliding panel and O a fixed panel, as viewed from the clerk's side. An XX window has two sliding panels, while OX and XO have one of each. For XX windows, the instructions add that the right hand sliding door is closest to the clerk side unless otherwise specified.

In the item numbers the O is printed as a zero. CRL's SH36480XA is a 36 x 48 OX window, and the instructions list SH4848X0 as the 48 x 48 XO and SH4848XX as the XX. The letters at the end are the finish: on CRL's SH3648XX page, A is Satin Anodized, BA Brite Anodized and BRZ Duranodic Bronze. The DW page also marks the sliding panel with X, but there Duranodic Bronze is DU, as in DW4844X0GDU. Our guide to CRL part numbers and finish codes covers more of these letters.

Speak-thrus: 834 No-Draft or SST7 stainless

CRL designs its No-Draft speak-thrus to let voice requests be heard at ticket windows, box offices and similar counters, to prevent tampering from the outside and to stop drafts. The 834 Series is aluminum, 5-5/16 inches in CRL's titles, in Satin Anodized, Brite Anodized, Brite Gold Anodized and Duranodic Bronze; the 549 Series is brass. The SST7 is CRL's 7 inch speak-thru in brushed 11 gauge stainless steel, with offset slots front and rear that CRL says prevent tampering and stop drafts.

Each page gives its own glass range. The 834A page says each unit comes with gaskets and mounting screws "for installation on glass from 1/4" (6 mm) to 1/2" (12 mm) thick" and adds: "For glass up to 3-3/4" (95 mm) thick you can use the optional Cat. No. 8324 4" (102 mm) screws." The SST7 page says: "Two sets of screws accommodate glazing from 1/4" to 1-1/4" (6 to 32 mm) thick."

CRL lists glass fabrication as required for both. For the 834 and 549, the document CRL links on the 834A page is the No Draft Speak-Thrus Fabrication Template. The template and the 834A page do not give the same recommended hole diameter, so settle the size with CRL before the glass is ordered. For the SST7, CRL says the instructions come with the speak-thru.

Deal tray or deal drawer

CRL's drop-in deal tray is a stainless dish that sits in a rectangular cutout in the counter top; CRL calls the design flush. The Standard Drop-In Deal Trays come polished (CTD numbers) or brushed (CTDB numbers), in three widths up to 16 inches, with a 1-1/2 inch deep dish and a 1 inch lip all around. Our CTDB12 is the brushed 12 x 10 x 1-9/16 inch tray. CRL's Standard Deal Tray installation instructions give the cutout for each width and two mounting methods, clear silicone sealant or screws. Outdoors, mind CRL's warning: "Deal Tray does not have drain holes, so an awning or overhang is recommended when used in an exterior application."

The DD1616 deal drawer is recessed into the counter along its front edge; CRL notes that glazing above its flat hood does not obstruct the drawer. A full width handle at the rear pushes it along ball bearing glides, and the Lexan lid will not open while the drawer is extended. It ships fully assembled; inside, it measures 12-3/8 inches wide, 13-1/4 deep and 2-7/8 high. The DD1616 installation instructions show the counter cutout and the same two mounting methods.

Window documents and Sharyn replacement parts

The Sharyn installation instructions open with parts identification, then specifications and glass fabrication, then separate steps for XX models and for OX and XO models. Specifiers can use the SH3648 3 Part-Spec, a Word file written as Section 08 56 19. For a worn roller, lock or guide, the parts identification gives the number; where CRL prints an underscore, as on the window kits, tell us the finish when you order. A selection:

For the DW, CRL's page links CAD drawings of the DW4844 and DW4836 windows. Ask us before you plan the opening.
