Hager Hinge Numbers Explained: Series, Sizes, Finish Codes and Options

Hager Companies (Hager) specifies a hinge by series, size, finish code and option letters. This guide explains each part as Hager's catalogs print it and shows how the parts appear in our Hager item numbers.

Hager hinge series: 1279, BB1279, 1191, BB1168, BB1199

The Hinge Selector on page 11 lists full mortise and half mortise hinges by weight, bearing and material. A selection of five knuckle series:

SeriesWeight, bearingMaterial
1279Standard, plain bearingSteel
1191Standard, plain bearingBrass or stainless
BB1279Standard, 2 ball bearingsSteel
BB1191Standard, 2 ball bearingsBrass or stainless
BB1168Heavy, 4 ball bearingsSteel
BB1199Heavy, 4 ball bearingsBrass or stainless

A table on page 3 matches frequency of use to a series: low 1279, medium BB1279, high BB1168. The 1279 model entry adds: "Use ball bearing hinge when door closer is installed on door". Page 4 notes: "Brass material may not be used on fire rated or labeled openings because of the low melting point."

According to page 2, only full mortise hinges carry two dimensions, such as 4-1/2 x 4-1/2 inches: the height first, then the width with the hinge open. Hinge types are compared in our guide to door hinge types.

Prefixes and option letters

  • BB - ball bearing; AB - anti-friction nylon bearing, standard on three knuckle hinges (page 5).
  • WT - wide throw, as in WTBB1279 or WTBB1199. Page 3: a full mortise hinge wider than it is high, such as 4-1/2 x 6 inches.
  • HT - Hospital Tip. The note under the selector says Hospital Tip hinges are available on all architectural hinges except anchor hinges. Page 5 adds: "Using a Hospital Tip on spring hinges voids the UL listing."
  • EC and ECBB - models such as EC1100 and ECBB1100, listed under "Full Mortise - Ecco".
  • NRP (Non-Removable Pin), SH (Safety Stud), RSS (Reverse Security Stud) - page 6 says "These features are intended as deterrents only."
  • EMN, ETW, ETM - concealed electric modifications added to the product number, for example BB1279 EMN.
  • RH and LH - page 5 notes that most manufacturers use these suffixes for handed hinges (see our door handing chart).

For round corner hinges, a note under the selector asks for a 1/4 inch or 5/8 inch radius; if none is specified, 1/4 inch is supplied.

ANSI numbers such as A8112 are a separate system

Hager's model pages print ANSI numbers such as A8133 for 1279 and A8112 for BB1279. The "ANSI NUMBERING SYSTEM" key on page 2 reads the letter A as section A of the ANSI standard; the four numerals give material (for example 2 wrought brass or bronze, 5 stainless steel, 8 wrought steel, forged steel or malleable iron), type (1 full mortise), function (1 anti-friction bearing, 3 plain bearing) and grade classification. Page 17 lists BB1191 as A2112 in brass and A5112 in stainless steel. Hager's catalog number does not contain the ANSI number, so read each system on its own, and if a product page differs from the catalog, go by the catalog.

Hager finish codes and BHMA numbers

The finish table on page 4 lists Hager codes with BHMA numbers by base material (brass here means the Brass and Bronze column). A selection:

CodeNameBHMA
10BAntique Bronze, Oiled640 steel, 613 brass
10DBlack Nickel, Oiled640 steel, 613 brass
15Satin Nickel646 steel, 619 brass
26DSatin Chromium Plated652 steel, 626 brass
32DStainless steel630 stainless
L1Flat Black693 steel, 693 brass

The same page says Hager only warrants the US10B finish over brass and recommends US10A lacquer finish when a steel base is necessary. 10B and 10D share 640 and 613, which Hager's General Information table gives only to US10B (dark oxidized satin bronze, oil rubbed), so the BHMA number alone does not identify 10D. For BHMA numbers across brands, see our door hardware finish codes chart.

The finish table in Hager's General Information section (pages 4-5) adds a Residential column; some of its codes differ from the US codes. A selection, brass and steel bases only:

ResidentialUS equivalent; BHMA
10RUS10B; 613 brass, 640 steel
1DUS19; 622 brass, 631 steel
ANUS15A; 620 brass, 647 steel

How our Hager item numbers are put together

In these hinge examples the parts run together: series, then digits that match the size in the title, then finish code and options:

  • Hager BB1279410D: BB1279 + 4 (4 x 4 inches) + 10D
  • Hager BB1199532DNRPEA: BB1199 + 5 (5 x 5 inches) + 32D + NRP + EA
  • Hager WTBB1279412526D: WTBB1279 + 4125 (4-1/2 x 5 inches) + 26D
  • Hager 125041215.1: 1250 spring hinge + 412 (4-1/2 x 4-1/2 inches) + 15 + .1 (a single box, per the page)
  • Hager RC184231210REA58: a residential hinge in which 312 (3-1/2 x 3-1/2 inches), 10R, EA and 58 (5/8 inch radius in the title) can be seen

Hager's catalog confirms the commercial series, finish codes and option letters. Everything else is a pattern visible in these examples, not a rule: size digits (4, 412, 312), endings such as .BX (1191410D.BX is a 3-pack), .BG (2817191D.BG is a bag of 100 screws), EA or .1, radius digits such as 58 and the RC prefix. For residential hinges, check size, corners and pack quantity in the title.

Hager Roton continuous hinge numbers

The HOW TO ORDER line on page 2 of Hager's Roton price book (March 2026) reads 780 (series), 112HD (profile), 119" (length), CLR (finish), 1 PK (standard single pack). Our title Hager 780-224HD 95 CLR follows that order without the pack: series 780, profile 224HD, 95 inches, finish CLR.

Hager locks, exit devices, closers and trim

These groups have their own Hager catalog sections; this guide does not decode their numbers.

  • Locks such as 3440, 3453, 3510 and 3580: Hager 3510AUG26D passage lock
  • Exit devices of the 4500 series: Hager 4501 SVR exit device
  • Door closers 5100, 5200, 5300 and 5400: Hager 5100-PAR door closer
  • Trim: Hager 190S kick plates and 30S push plates are covered in our guide to kick, push and pull plates.
