Replacing a Residential Essentials Cabinet Knob or Pull: Hole Spacing and Sizes

To replace a Residential Essentials cabinet knob or pull, you need its item number or the sizes to match. This guide shows what the maker's four dimension sheets print for each kind of piece and lists the center-to-center spacings of the pulls.

The Residential Essentials cabinet hardware dimension sheets

Residential Essentials publishes its cabinet hardware sizes in four one-page PDFs on its home page, under Product Dimensions: Cabinet Hardware Dimensions 1, 2, 3 and 4. Each row shows a photo, the item number and the sizes in inches. Together the sheets cover 108 numbers, from 10201 to 10452 - the same 108 numbers as our Residential Essentials cabinet hardware pages.

The sheets print the number without a finish. On our pages, and on the labeled photos of the maker's finish pages, the number ends in two finish letters: AP (Aged Pewter), BK (Black), PC (Polished Chrome), SB (Satin Brass), SN (Satin Nickel) or VB (Venetian Bronze). To look up 10204SB, read the row for 10204. Not every number comes in every finish: the maker's cabinet hardware page counts 20 styles of knobs and pulls in Satin Brass and 88 in Satin Nickel, and its finish pages show 10223, for example, in Polished Chrome, Satin Nickel and Venetian Bronze.

Pull sizes: center to center, L x W x D and foot diameter

All 64 numbers that we sell as pulls have a center-to-center spacing and an overall size printed as length (L) x width (W) x depth (D). The 10223 pull, for example, reads 5-7/8" (L) x 3/4" (W) x 1-1/8" (D), Foot Diameter 3/4", 5" Center to Center. A foot diameter is printed for 61 of the 64; the rows for 10204, 10225 and 10251 give only the size and the spacing.

For what center to center, length and projection mean, and how to measure an old pull, see our guide to cabinet pull sizes. Some spacings are only 1/16" or 1/8" apart: the sheets print 6-1/4", 6-5/16" and 6-3/8" for different pulls, and 12-9/16", 12-5/8" and 12-3/4" for others. And pulls with the same spacing can differ in length: at 5" center to center, 10281 is 5-3/8" long and 10239 is 7" long.

Knob sizes: diameter, projection and base diameter

For most knobs the sheets print the diameter, the projection and the base diameter. The 10297 knob reads 1" (Dia) x 1" (Projection), Base Diameter 7/8". Of the 32 numbers we sell as knobs, 25 are printed this way, and so is 10316, which our pages call a ring pull: 1-1/2" (Dia) x 5/8" (Projection), Base Diameter 3/8".

The other seven knobs are printed differently:

  • 10318: 1-3/8" (L) x 1-3/8" (W) x 1-1/8" (D), Base Diameter 7/8" and 5/8" Center to Center - the only knob with a spacing on the sheets
  • 10360: 15/16" (Dia) x 1-7/16" (Projection), plus Length 1-3/8" and Base Diameter 1/2"
  • 10396: 1-1/4" (L) x 1-1/4" (W) x 1-1/16" (D), Base 7/8"
  • 10213 and 10320: length x width x depth with a base diameter, for example 1" (L) x 1" (W) x 15/16" (D), Base Diameter 3/4" for 10320
  • 10221: 1-1/4" (L) x 15/16" (Projection), Base Diameter 11/16"
  • 10381: 1-1/2" (L) x 5/8" (W) x 1-3/8" (D) with Foot Diameter 3/8", but no spacing

Check which sizes a knob's row gives before you compare.

Backplates, mock keys and the ring pull with backplate

Two rows carry notes. For 10227, 6" (L) x 3/4" (W) x 1" (D), the sheet says: "Mock key is included with Backplate and can be used seperatley" (spelling as printed). For the 10247 ring pull with backplate, 2-5/8" (L) x 1" (W) x 3/4" (D), it says: "Ring is included with backplate" and "Can be mounted horizontally or vertically".

The eight backplates numbered 10402 to 10416 and the mock key 10452 have no L, W or D labels. Their sizes are printed as plain figures - 15/16" x 4-1/2" x 1-1/4" for the 10402 mock key with backplate and 1-5/16" x 1" for 10452 - so the sheet does not say which figure is the length, the width or the depth. These nine numbers appear only on the maker's Venetian Bronze pages; 10227 is shown in Aged Pewter and Venetian Bronze, and 10247 in Aged Pewter, Black and Venetian Bronze.

Some words in our titles are ours, not the maker's

Apart from the two notes above, the sheets identify each piece only by its photo, number and sizes. Words in our product titles such as thin pull, fluted pull, thin knob, egg knob and ring pull are our own descriptions, so compare by the five-digit number.

Before you order a replacement

  • The five-digit number and the two finish letters, if you know them
  • For a pull: the center-to-center spacing, and the L x W x D and foot diameter for a match in size
  • For a knob: the sizes its row gives - in most cases the diameter, the projection and the base diameter
  • On the drawer or door front: the hole spacing, measured as our cabinet pull sizes guide describes

Apart from the two notes above, the sheets print sizes only; they give no screw sizes, drilling instructions or installation steps.
