Before you prepare the frame for an HES 1006, 9600 or 5000 electric strike and wire it, you need the frame preparation drawings and the wiring steps from the HES installation instructions. Below are links to the editions published on the HES website. For each one we show where it prints the cutouts, dimensions and electrical ratings, and what it says about fail secure and fail safe operation.
HES electric strike installation instructions (PDF)
- 1006 Electric Strike Installation Instructions - document 3062006.006_3, copyright 2025, 8 printed pages
- 9400, 9500, 9600, 9700, 9800 Electric Strike Installation Instructions and Frame Preparation - document 3026006.004_3, copyright 2024, 4 pages
- 5000 and 5300 Series Electric Strikes Installation Instructions - document 3019006.003_7, copyright 2025, 4 pages
Each installation section opens with a warning to verify the input voltage with a multimeter: "Any input voltage exceeding 10% of the solenoid rating may cause severe damage to the unit."
HES 1006 installation instructions and cutout dimensions
The HES catalog page presents the 1006 for cylindrical and mortise locksets with or without a deadbolt (up to 1 inch) and lists metal and wood frames. In the instructions:
- Page 1: components and electrical specifications
- Page 2: preparing the strike, monitor wiring table (LBM and LBSM), wiring diagrams, preparing the frame and finishing
- Pages 3-4: deadbolt options E and R and the brackets for the H, HD, HM and H2 options
- Pages 5-6: cutout dimensions
- Pages 7-8: faceplate options
Page 5 shows the strike position relative to the centerline of a mortise or cylindrical lockset. Page 6 has three cutout drawings:
| Cutout drawing | Faceplate options listed |
|---|---|
| Metal jamb, 1006LB series faceplates | J, K, KM, N, NM, H, Z, R, E |
| Metal jamb, 1006DB series faceplates | KD, ND, HM, HTD, N, NM |
| Wood jamb, 1006-2 series faceplates | J2, K2, KM2, N2, H2, DB2 |
The notes on page 6 say the 1006LB cutout is normally used with mortise locks without deadbolt, but not with Schlage L9000 or ASSA ABLOY Accentra 8700 Series (formerly Yale Commercial) locks. The 1006DB cutout is normally used with mortise locks with deadbolt, and also with those two series. Both metal jamb drawings show two 12-24 UNC threaded holes 4-1/8 inches apart, and the wood jamb drawing is dimensioned 9 inches overall.
Fail secure or fail safe: the catalog's How to Order chart lists fail secure as standard and F for fail safe, as in 1006F. Diagram 4 on page 2 shows typical wiring for the 1006F (fail safe) and the 1006 (fail secure); the instructions contain no mode conversion steps.
HES 9600 installation instructions, dimensions and template kit (9000 family)
The 9600 shares one document with the 9400, 9500, 9700 and 9800. HES's 9600 catalog page describes a surface mounted strike for rim exit devices with a 3/4 inch throw Pullman latchbolt (see our exit device types guide), lists metal and wood frames and says no cutting on the frame is required.
- Page 1: components, electrical specifications and performance tables
- Page 2: preparing the strike, 12 to 24 VDC conversion, fail secure and fail safe diagrams
- Page 3: converting the operation mode, monitor wiring, preparing the frame, horizontal adjustment, optional lockdown screw (with a windstorm warning for the 9600 and 9700)
- Page 4: a 9400 on a hollow metal frame and on an aluminum frame with a blade stop, and the dimension drawing
The dimension drawing is marked not to scale. It shows a 9 x 1-3/4 inch strike with holes for two 1/4-20 UNC mounting screws 4-1/8 inches above and below the latchbolt centerline, a 3/4 inch clearance hole for power wiring and a 1/2 inch hole for LBM or LBSM wiring. Page 3 says an HES 9000-ASB is necessary on an aluminum frame with a blade stop, and page 4 says the HES 9000-MTK should be ordered for easy installation.
Fail secure or fail safe: the catalog calls the 9600 field selectable. According to the instructions, the unit ships in fail secure mode, and in fail safe operation both keepers are unlocked without power and locked when power is applied. Page 3 warns that fail safe operation mode should not be used in fire rated or windstorm resistant applications.
HES 5000 installation instructions and faceplate cutouts
The 5000 and 5300 share one document. HES's catalog page describes the 5000 as a low profile strike for openings with limited space behind the jamb, for cylindrical locksets with up to a 5/8 inch throw latchbolt. Page 1 has the components and electrical data, page 2 the installation steps and monitor wiring table, page 3 the fail safe conversion and two wiring examples, and page 4 the cutout templates by faceplate:
| Faceplate | Size, inches | Printed use |
|---|---|---|
| 501 | 4-7/8 x 1-1/4 | Cylindrical locksets in ANSI metal jambs |
| 501A | 4-7/8 x 1-1/4 | Cylindrical locksets or spring latches in aluminum frames |
| 502 | 7-15/16 x 1-7/16 | Same as 501A |
| 503 | 6-7/8 x 1-1/4 | Same as 501A |
| 504 | 10 x 1-3/8 | Cylindrical locksets, four-point mounting for wood |
Page 4 also mentions the HESCUT-MTK reusable metal template kit. The catalog calls the 5000 field selectable; page 3 says the unit ships in fail secure mode and notes that conversion to fail safe negates the fire rating on the 5300.
Electrical data printed in the HES instructions
Each document selects the voltage by plug in connector, marked 12 VDC or 24 VDC. Continuous duty ratings as printed (each document adds that solenoids are rated at plus or minus 10% of the indicated value):
| Series | 12 VDC | 24 VDC |
|---|---|---|
| 1006 | 0.48 A, 25 ohms | 0.24 A, 100 ohms |
| 9400-9800 | 500 mA, 24 ohms | 250 mA, 96 ohms |
| 5000, 5300 | 0.24 A, 50 ohms | 0.12 A, 200 ohms |
The 5000 and 5300 document adds intermittent duty ratings at 12, 16 and 24 VAC. Minimum wire gauge for runs of 200 feet or less, 200-300 and 300-400 feet, lengths based on round trip:
| Series | 12 VDC | 24 VDC |
|---|---|---|
| 1006 | 18, 16, 14 | 18, 18, 16 |
| 9400-9800 | 18, 16, 16 | 22, 22, 20 |
| 5000, 5300 | 18, 16, 14 | 20, 18, 16 |
An older 1006 edition, 3062006.005, prints the same gauges with "(One Way)" in the table heading.
