The paperwork for a door says 2103, or MLR-2103-1703A, and the device now needs something: a kit for electric latch retraction, a dogging part, an alarm kit or a harness. The number gives the device type and the function; the ELR, dogging and alarm kits are also ordered by stile and door width.
How to read a Precision 2000 exit device number
The How to Order page of the current price list splits a number such as 2108 into three parts. The first digit, 2, is the Precision 2000 Series, the second is the device type and the last two are the function. Options are letters in front (TS2108, ELR2108, FL2108) or after the number (2103CD).
| Series | Device | Stile |
|---|---|---|
| 2100 | Rim, reversible | Wide |
| 2200 | Surface vertical rod | Wide |
| 2300 | Mortise, handed | Wide |
| 2400 | Rim, non handed | Narrow |
| 2600 | Concealed vertical rod | Narrow |
| 2700 | Concealed rod, wood door | Wide |
| 2800 | Concealed rod, metal door | Wide |
Our exit device types guide explains each type. On the 2100 rim page of the Precision 2000 Series catalog (PDF) the function digits read like this:
| Code | Function |
|---|---|
| 01 | Exit only, cover plate |
| 02 | Dummy trim |
| 03 | Key retracts latchbolt |
| 05 | Key locks or unlocks thumbpiece |
| 08 | Key locks or unlocks lever or knob |
| 10 | Double cylinder, handed |
| 14 | Lever or knob always active |
| 15 | Thumbpiece always active |
2103 is therefore a wide stile rim device with the 03 function, and FL2108 a rim device with the 08 function built as fire exit hardware. The 2400 narrow stile rim is listed with fewer functions: 01, 02, 03, 08 and 14.
Parts marked Apex 2000 belong to the same series, which the price list says will now be known as the BEST Precision 2000 Series.
Trim numbers: 1703A, 4908A, V4908A
In the catalog's 2100 table, the outside trim number repeats the function digits of the device, 1703A for 2103 and 4908A for 2108, with one exception: the double cylinder 2110 takes 4908A or V4908A. The catalog calls 1700 its pull trim (grip A, B or C) and 4900 its lever trim (lever A to D or knob K). The 2400 narrow stile rim takes 2900 lever trim (2908A).
Prefixes change the trim, for example V for the vandal resistant lever, R for retrofit trim made for other manufacturers' installations on wide stile devices, BF for Barrier Free and M for mortise trim.
In a catalog order line the trim follows the device, then hand, finish, strike and door size. Precision writes the hand as RHRB or LHRB (see our door handing chart), and our finish codes chart covers 630, which the catalog pairs with US32D. On our product pages MLR-2103-1703A-630-48 reads as an MLR 2103 with 1703A trim, 630 finish, 48 inch.
ELR kits: adding electric latch retraction
An ELR device retracts the latchbolt with solenoids and can work with card readers, push buttons, door operators and fire alarm systems. To retrofit a standard device, the catalog lists ELRK conversion kits for wide stile and NELRK for narrow stile (table below), plus ELRKF and NELRKF versions. On the ELR page, a size 3 device is for doors from 2 ft 7 in to 3 ft and a size 4 device for doors from 3 ft 1 in to 4 ft.
ELR devices and kits require a power supply from the ELR150 series. The ELR150 has no control modules, ELR151 to ELR154 come with one to four, one per device, and BT adds battery backup (ELR151BT). ELR is not offered on delayed egress devices.
Looking for a circuit board? For the ELR150 the catalog names two cards: the CM150-08 control module, which controls one ELR device, and the BT150-07 battery backup card.
MLR motorized latch retraction and the RPMLR-K kit
MLR retracts the latch with a motor. RPSMLR2 power supplies, each for up to two MLR devices, are available but not required. MLR devices for 2 ft 6 in and 3 ft openings fit those openings only and cannot be cut in the field; a 4 ft device may be cut down to a 3 ft 4 in opening.
The catalog offers MLR as a field retrofit kit, MLR-K, for existing Precision 2000 devices, ELR devices included; the current price list orders it as RPMLR-K, or RPBFMLR-K for Barrier Free devices. The catalog names mechanical dogging as one option MLR does not work with and refers other options to the factory; for a device with hex key or cylinder dogging, the price list recommends adding a blank hinge filler.
Dogging parts: hex key and cylinder dogging kits
Quarter turn hex key dogging is standard on all seven device types in the catalog, but not on fire exit hardware. Cylinder dogging, suffix CD, lets a key hold the touchbar down so the door works push and pull. To convert hex key dogging in the field there is a cylinder dogging kit, CDK for wide and NCDK for narrow stile, with a channel filler, blocking ring, cylinder locator and lock nut. The 1-1/4 inch mortise cylinder is not included. Cylinder dogging is not offered on fire exit hardware or delayed egress devices.
Alarm kits, monitoring kits and the WH495 harness
Exit alarm kits retrofit existing devices: ALK kits use an included 9 volt battery, ALW kits 12 to 24 VDC remote power. The WH495 wiring harness is required to arm or disarm the alarm remotely and to sound it from an external input.
Monitoring kits include TSK309 (touchbar switch) for any Precision device and LSRK298 (latchbolt switch) for wide stile rim devices. E2103K converts a 2103 or FL2103 into an E2103 or FLE2103, which locks and unlocks the outside trim remotely and is fail secure as standard (see our fail safe vs fail secure guide). The catalog adds that an E device needs outside lever trim with the 08 or 14 function, such as 4908A or 4914A.
Wide or narrow stile: kit numbers side by side
A selection from the catalog and price list:
| Part | Wide stile | Narrow stile |
|---|---|---|
| ELR kit | ELRK-3, ELRK-4 | NELRK-3, NELRK-4 |
| Dogging kit | CDK-3, CDK-4 | NCDK-3, NCDK-4 |
| Alarm kit, battery | ALK-3, ALK-4 | NALK-3, NALK-4 |
| Touchbar assembly | TBA-3, TBA-4 | NTBA-3, NTBA-4 |
| End cap | EC992 | NEC993 |
For the double cylinder function, the catalog lists these field conversion kits by starting device:
- RDC-10: 2103 or 2108 to 2110
- RDC-10VI: 2103, 2108 or 2110 to 2110VI
- FRDC-10VI: FL2103, FL2108 or FL2110 to FL2110VI
- MDC-10: 2308 mortise device to 2310
When a 2103 or FL2103 is converted, the catalog says the trim must also change to 4908A or V4908A. The catalog does not recommend hex key or cylinder dogging with the 2110 and 2110VI.
