If you are replacing a Hager Companies (Hager) butt hinge or spring hinge, start with the old hinge on the door. Below we go through what to read off it in the terms of Hager's Commercial Hinges catalog, where each detail appears in our product names, and the Hager hinge parts we list.
What to read off the old Hager hinge
- Type: full mortise, half mortise, full surface or half surface (see our door hinge types guide).
- Size, corners, weight, bearing and base material (below).
- Knuckles: the catalog lists two, three and five knuckle hinges.
- Pin and tip, finish code and, for a handed hinge, the hand.
Hager's examples name a hinge by series, size and finish, such as BB1279 4-1/2 x 4-1/2, US26D.
Hinge size: height x width
According to Hager, only full mortise hinges carry two dimensions: the first is the height and the second is the width with the hinge open. The table below relates the door to the hinge height. These are only examples, Hager notes, and job situations will offer many more variables. Sizes are in inches:
| Door thickness | Door width | Hinge height |
|---|---|---|
| 1-3/8 | to 32 | 3-1/2 |
| 1-3/8 | 32 to 36 | 4 |
| 1-3/4 | to 36 | 4-1/2 |
| 1-3/4 | 36 to 48 | 5 |
| 1-3/4 | over 48 | 6 |
| 2, 2-1/4, 2-1/2 | to 42 | 5 heavy weight |
| 2, 2-1/4, 2-1/2 | over 42 | 6 heavy weight |
Corners, weight, bearing and material
Hager offers round corners in a 1/4 inch (standard) or 5/8 inch radius; its hinge selector notes that if the radius is not specified, 1/4 inch is supplied.
Hager places hinges in three groups. The factors it names are the weight and width of the door and the frequency of use, and it gives a minimum cycle requirement for each hinge type:
- Heavy weight ball bearing (example BB1199): 2,500,000 cycles
- Standard weight ball bearing (example BB1279): 1,500,000 cycles
- Standard weight plain bearing (example 1279): 350,000 cycles
The catalog also lists concealed anti-friction bearing hinges, such as the three knuckle AB700. Its selector pairs these steel full mortise series with brass or stainless steel ones:
| Hager selector | Steel | Brass or stainless |
|---|---|---|
| Std. wt., plain bearing | 1279 | 1191 |
| Std. wt., 2 ball bearings | BB1279 | BB1191 |
| Heavy wt., 4 ball bearings | BB1168 | BB1199 |
All six are five knuckle hinges. Hager says both steel and stainless steel hinges may be used on listed fire rated or labeled door openings. Brass, Hager adds, may not be used on fire rated or labeled openings because of its low melting point.
Pins, tips, finish and handing
Hager lists the 1279, BB1279 and BB1199 with a non-rising removable pin with button tip and plug. On an NRP (non-removable pin) hinge, a set screw in the barrel holds the pin; on a safety stud (SH) hinge, a stud on one leaf locks into the other leaf when the door is closed. Hager says these features are intended as deterrents only. Hospital Tip hinges are ordered with the prefix HT, and Hager names acorn, ball, steeple and urn as decorative tips.
Hager's finish table gives the number by base material: its 26D, satin chromium plated, is 652 on steel and 626 on brass and bronze. See our finish codes chart. Hager also notes that on some applications it will be necessary to order handed hinges. See our door handing chart.

Hager spring hinges
We list Hager's 1150, 1250 and 1251 single acting spring hinges (Hager: 1150 square corner, stainless steel; 1250 square corner and 1251 1/4 inch radius, steel), the 1303 double acting spring hinge and residential spring hinges such as the 1752. Hager prints these notes with its single acting series (1150, 1250, 1251 and others), word for word:
- UL approved for use on doors 4'0" x 8'0", but Hager does not recommend using spring hinges on doors over 7'0" in favor of hydraulic door closers.
- Doors over 3'0" x 7'0" or over 100 lbs. require three spring hinges. Doors 150-180 lbs. require four spring hinges.
- For maximum versatility use all spring hinges or a combination of spring hinges and ball bearing or anti-friction hinges. Do not use plain bearing hinges.
Hager adds that using a Hospital Tip on spring hinges voids the UL listing. The catalog describes the 1303 as steel, adjustable, for wood doors only, and gives the maximum door for three hinges (example: Hager 130326D5, 5 inch, satin chrome):
| Model | Max door weight | Max door width |
|---|---|---|
| 1303-3 | 35 lbs | 2'-8" |
| 1303-4 | 75 lbs | 3' |
| 1303-5 | 90 lbs | 3' |
| 1303-6 | 100 lbs | 3' |
