Sargent 80 Series Exit Device Trim and Parts: How to Identify What You Need

If you are replacing trim or a part on a Sargent 80 Series exit device, the new piece has to match the device it goes on. The same function can carry a different trim number on an 8800 than on an 8900. Below is how Sargent numbers its ET, pull and PE80 trims, and which common replacement parts its 80 Series catalog lists.

Start with the exit device number

In the 80 Series catalog the device series is followed by a two-digit function: 8806 is an 8800 rim device with function 06, and MD8613 is an MD8600 concealed vertical rod device for metal doors with function 13. Our exit device types guide explains the device types, and our lock functions guide the basic 8800 functions.

In the catalog's How to Order legend, ET stands for Sargent External Lever Trim and NB for no bottom rod. With a device, the lever letter follows ET, as in ETL; the 8800 page lists A, B, E, F, J, L, P and W as ET lever designs.

Sargent 8800 trim: 700 Series ET trim numbers

ET trim ordered without a device has its own number. The catalog's example 775-8 ETL 26D RHR 12VDC reads: 7 for a 700 Series auxiliary control, 75 for the function, -8 for a suffix determined by the exit device, ETL for the L lever, then finish, hand and voltage.

One function can have different trim numbers. Examples from the catalog's device pages:

DeviceFunction 06Function 13
8800 rim706-8713-8
8900 mortise706713
8700 SVR706713
MD8600, AD8600706-4713-4
LP, LR, LS8600706-6713-6

On the 8800 the 04, 10, 16, 40 and 44 trims take no suffix: 704, 710, 716, 740 and 744. According to the catalog, -8 means a cross type spindle, -4 offset mounting tabs at the top and bottom, and -6 an offset mounting tab at the top only. Replacement spindles for 06, 13, 15, 16 and 73 to 76 trims come as 730 retrofit kits, by trim series (700, 700-4 or 700-8) and door thickness.

Functions 40, 43, 44 and 46 are freewheeling trims: the lever rotates when the door is locked. The 8800 table lists the cylinder supplied with each keyed function, such as #34 for 04, #41 for 06 and 13, and #34 outside with #44 inside for 16. For LFIC and SFIC (70-) cylinder options, the catalog says 700 Series ET controls require 97-0351 cylinder rings (see our SFIC vs LFIC guide).

On our site: 704-ETL26D, 713-8-ETL-26D RHR and 710-4-ETL-26D RHR.

Electrified ET trim: 73, 74, 75 and 76

  • 73: fail safe, power off unlocks the lever (no cylinder)
  • 74: fail secure, power off locks the lever (no cylinder)
  • 75: as 73, plus a key that retracts the latch (#34 cylinder)
  • 76: as 74, plus a key that retracts the latch (#34 cylinder)

Voltage must be specified as 12VDC or 24VDC, and for 775 or 776 trim the catalog asks for either a rim or a mortise cylinder. It lists a McKinney QC8 hinge as required for these EcoFlex ET trims and for the 54- lever monitoring option. Other electric options go before the device number: 53- latchbolt monitoring, 55- request to exit, 56- remote latch retraction, 58- electric dogging, 59- delayed egress and AL- alarm. Example: 775-8 ETL 12V 26D fail safe trim.

Pull and thumbpiece trims

With a device, pull trims are ordered by three letters (FLL, FLW, MAL, PTB, STS); trim alone by the full designation, such as 866-MAL. The number depends on the function: 814 for night latch (04), 810 for pull only (10), 828 for passage (28) and 866 for thumbpiece functions 63 and 66. The catalog calls the 63 and 66 trims identical. FSL, FSW, MSL and PSB are the FLL, FLW, MAL and PTB pulls with the cylinder hole 3/8 inch lower; the catalog lists them for the 8804 and 8888 only, including HC- and 12- versions. Example: 866 STS RHR 32D thumbpiece pull trim.

Sargent PE8800 trim (PE80 Series)

The PE80 Series device codes are PE88 and PE85 (rim), PE87 (SVR), PE86 and PE84 (CVR) and PE89 and PE83 (mortise). Lever trim is WE (wide stile) or NE (narrow stile) plus the lever letter, and trim alone has a P in front: the PE8800 table lists P706-8 as the trim-only number for function 06, in NE and WE versions. If your device number starts with PE, use the trim tables of the PE80 catalog. Example: P713-8-NEL-26D RHR.

Sargent 80 Series parts: strikes, rods, end caps and dogging

  • Strikes: for the 8800 the catalog lists the 649 as standard and the 642 (mortised), 644 (surface applied, for pairs of doors without a mullion) and 613 (half mortised) as optional. Example: 649 standard strike.
  • Rods: rod replacement kits are 670T and 670B for all 8700 devices and MD660T and 660B for the MD and AD8600. Top rod kits need the door height and rail location. Example: 670T 32D 84 top rod kit.
  • Surface mounted top rod extensions: 571 kits are for devices made before November 2002, 687 kits for later ones.
  • End caps: the 565 metal end cap kit includes a mounting plate and screws; the 665 flush end cap kit is listed for retrofit or replacement.
  • Dogging: hex key dogging is standard on non-fire-rated devices. Cylinder dogging (16-) is also sold as an 816 kit chosen by rail size and narrow or wide rail, for example 816-3 for a G wide rail; it is not available on fire-rated devices, the FM8700 or some electrical options, and needs a door at least 27 inches wide. Example: 816-3 32D cylinder dogging kit.
  • Touchpad: the 809 kit is a Lexan touchpad replacement for all 80 Series push rails.

What to match before you order

  • The full device number, including prefixes such as PE, MD or NB, and the function
  • Door width (rail size) and, for vertical rods, the opening height
  • Hand: Sargent's How to Order page uses RHR or LHR (see our door handing chart)
  • Door thickness, finish and, where the catalog splits a part by date, when the device was made

Sargent's 80 Series page carries the catalog, templates, installation instructions and parts manuals, and its PE80 Series page the PE80 catalog. Install any part according to Sargent's instructions for your device.
