Von Duprin Exit Device Strikes and Dogging Parts: 299, 1409, 338 and Dogging Kits

This page shows which strikes Von Duprin lists for its 98/99 Series exit devices (299, 1409, 338, 385A and others), what the strike templates show, and which hex and cylinder dogging kits and parts the Von Duprin documents name.

Sources: Von Duprin's 98/99 Series catalog, price book 16 (2026) and strike templates. Device types are explained in our exit device types guide.

Strikes for Von Duprin 98/99 rim, vertical rod and mortise devices

Strikes named on these device pages of the 98/99 catalog (-F marks the fire exit hardware version; XP rim and concealed vertical cable devices use other strikes, such as 909, 249 and 349):

DeviceTop or rim strikeBottom strike
98, 99 rim299-
98-F, 99-F rim299F; 499F with mullions-
9827, 9927 SVR299248L-4 and 304L
9827-F, 9927-F SVR299F; 499F for LBR304L

9847WDC, 9947WDC338; 283 with wood frames385A
9875, 9975 mortise575-

The 299 serves rim devices and the top of surface vertical rod devices; its template has a rim and a vertical application drawing. When another strike replaces the standard one, the price book says to "check catalog for compatibility".

Von Duprin 1409 strike and other rim strikes

Besides the 299, 299F and 499F, the catalog's "Strikes for rim devices" page shows the 264, 1408, 1410, 1439, 1606 and 1609, but not the 1409. The price book's rim strike table lists the 1409 as non-finished, standard for 55 Series panic devices and optional for the 22 Series, and Von Duprin's 98/99 strike template index lists a 1409 template (30022) for 98, 99, 98-F and 99-F rim devices. The 1409 template's table gives a minimum stile width per device series, for example 3-13/16 inches for 98/99 rim and 1-3/4 inches for 33/35 rim.

Vertical rod strikes: 338 top strike and 385A bottom strike

In the price book, the 338 is the standard vertical rod top strike for concealed vertical rod devices of the 33A/35A, 75, 78 and 98/99 Series, including the WDC (wood door) versions. For the bottom, it lists the 304L as standard for surface vertical rod and three-point devices, the 248L-4 as standard for their panic versions, and the 385A for concealed devices; a footnote recommends the 385A over the 304L for wood door applications "based on its adjustability".

The 338 template is for hollow metal frame preparation. Its application schedule lists the 33/3547, 33/3547A, 98/9947, 5547, 94/9547, 7547 and 7847 Series. The 385A template says the strike "has two pieces" and lists the 98/9947, 98/9948 and 98/9947WDC among its devices.

Von Duprin strike templates: 299, 1409, 338 and 385A

Each strike template below is a one-page drawing with dimensions, a template number and a date, and refers to master sheet #10001 for suggested reinforcing.

If your device and strike are not listed together in the template index, ask Von Duprin or us before you order.

Hex dogging and cylinder dogging (CD)

Dogging holds the latch bolt retracted, in what the 98/99 catalog calls the "dogged (unlatched) position". The catalog lists these options:

  • Hex key dogging "comes standard on 98/99 rim exit devices", and the SVR, CVR and mortise device pages list it as standard too. The catalog shows two dog keys: 222 (7/32 inch hex) and 227 (5/32 inch hex).
  • Cylinder dogging (CD) is "available on all 98/99 Panic exit devices to replace the standard hex key dogging". It needs a standard 1-1/4 inch mortise cylinder with an inverted straight cam; the catalog says cylinders are not furnished and must be specified. Example: CD99L.
  • Less dogging (LD) removes the dogging option. Further options: special center case dogging (SD) and dogging indicators.

On fire exit hardware: the catalog's -F rim, vertical rod and mortise device pages show "No mechanical dogging", the price book heads its dogging options "Not for use with fire exit hardware", and the catalog marks its conversion kits "Cannot be added to fire exit hardware."

Cylinder dogging kits, hex dogging shaft and dog keys

The catalog lists field conversion kits, ordered as 99CDK or 98CDK (hex key to cylinder dogging) and 99HDK or 98HDK (cylinder to hex key dogging). The price book's parts pages list:

Part numberPrice book description
05011499 or 33A hex dog conversion kit
05011798 or 35A hex dog conversion kit
05011599 or 33A CD conversion kit
05013298 or 35A CD conversion kit
090040Hex dogging shaft, pack of 2
090005, 090085227 dog key 5/32, pack of 2 or 10

The 33A/35A parts list uses the same kit numbers for its 33A and 35A kits, and our kit names below read 33A/99 or 35A/98. The 090040 shaft has the same number in the parts lists of the 98/99, 33A/35A, 22, 75 and 78 Series.

Von Duprin's cylinder dogging to hex dogging conversion instructions (941907-00, PDF) list a dogging shaft (old design prior to 9/97, and current design), a hex key dogging cover plate and a hex key, with separate steps for devices made before and after 9/97.

How these parts appear in our product names

  • In the strike names shown below this post, the model number follows the brand, sometimes with the finish, as in 299 26D. Finish codes are explained in our door hardware finish codes chart.
  • In the kit names, the finish is attached to the part number: 050115-628, or run together as 05011428 (050114 plus 28, as in US28).
  • Device names can start with a dogging prefix, CD- or LD-: CD-98EO-711-48 LS is a cylinder dogging 98 rim device, exit only, 48 inch, and LS is Von Duprin's code for Less Strike.

Product names are short summaries: before you order, match the device series, type and panic or fire version to the catalog or the template application schedule.
