When you replace an Adams Rite deadlock, deadlatch or exit device, every digit and suffix of the old number matters. A number such as MS1850S-310-628, 4900-36-201-628 or 8801EL-36-24V is a row of codes for faceplate, backset, bolt, hand, strike, options and finish. Below we decode them with Adams Rite's How to Order tables and 2026 Parts Manual, so you can find the right page in our catalog.
MS1850S deadlock: how to read MS1850S-310-628
From the MS1850S catalog page:
| Part | Codes |
|---|---|
| Faceplate | MS1850S flat, MS1851S radius, MS1851SW radius with weatherstrip, MS1852S bevel |
| 1st digit: backset | 1 = 7/8, 2 = 31/32, 3 = 1-1/8, 4 = 1-1/2 inch |
| 2nd digit: bolt | 1 = straight bolt, 5 = hookbolt |
| 3rd digit: hand | 0 = non-handed, 5 = LH or RHR, 6 = RH or LHR |
| Finish | 313 dark bronze anodized, 335 black anodized, 628 clear anodized |
So MS1850S-310-628 is a flat faceplate, 1-1/8 inch backset, straight bolt, non-handed deadlock in clear anodized, and MS1850S-350-313 is the same with a hookbolt in dark bronze anodized. Some of our titles drop the dashes, as on our MS1850S310628 page.
- Only bevel faceplates take a hand; flat and radius ones are non-handed (except the Schoolhouse version). Our door handing chart explains the letters.
- The catalog describes the hookbolt version (MS1850S-X5X) for sliding narrow stile aluminum doors.
- A 2 as the bolt digit is the 1850S-X2X short throw deadlock, not available with the 7/8 inch backset.
- The cylinder is separate: a 1 inch long, 1-5/32 inch diameter mortise cylinder with MS cam, such as the Adams Rite 4036, or a 4066 thumbturn (catalog page).
Searching for the MS1850A? The 2026 Parts Manual lists one installation sheet (80-0180-5) for the MS1850S and MS1850A, and the 4900 catalog page calls its stile preparation identical to both.
4900 and 4510 deadlatches: how to read 4900-36-201-628
Deadlatch numbers add the strike (4900 catalog page):
- Faceplate: 4900 standard, 4911W radius with weatherstrip, 4913 without faceplate or strike plate.
- Backset digit: 2 = 31/32, 3 = 1-1/8, 4 = 1-1/2 inch.
- Hand digit: 5 = LH or RHR, 6 = RH or LHR.
- Strike size: 1 = 4901 strike (4-5/8 inch), 2 = 4902 strike (2-5/8 inch).
- Strike shape: 01 flat (standard jamb), 02 radius (standard stile), 17 or 21 flat for center hung doors in a 4 or 4-1/2 inch jamb.
- Finish: 313, 335 or 628.
Our 4900-36-201-628 is a standard faceplate, 1-1/8 inch backset, RH or LHR deadlatch with a flat 4902 strike in clear anodized. The 4510 uses the same table with one faceplate digit (4510 flat, 4511 radius, 4511W radius with weatherstrip, 4512 bevel, 4513 without faceplate or strike) and backsets from 7/8 to 1-1/2 inch: our 4512-36-101-313 is a bevel faceplate, 1-1/8 inch backset, RH or LHR deadlatch with a flat 4901 strike in dark bronze anodized.
The 4900 needs a door at least 1-3/4 inch thick. Both series let you reverse the latchbolt hand without special tools, yet both catalog pages ask for backset, faceplate shape, strike, hand and finish when ordering. They also state that the deadlatch is interchangeable, without stile modification, with an MS1850S deadlock of the same backset and faceplate shape.
8800 and 8600 exit devices: how to read 8801EL-36-24V
The 8800 is a narrow stile rim device, the 8600 a narrow stile concealed vertical rod (CVR) device (see our exit device types guide). Both numbers start with the series (88 or 86) and a push bar finish, coded differently:
| Push bar finish | 8800 | 8600 |
|---|---|---|
| US finish | 00 | 00 |
| Clear anodized 628 | 01 | 11 |
| Dark bronze anodized 313 | 02 | 22 |
| Black anodized 335 | 03 | 33 |
- Options: EL (8800) or LR (8600) electric latch retraction (solenoid), MLR motorized latch retraction, C cylinder dogging, A alarm.
- 8600 only: T after the finish means top rod only.
- Monitoring: M single switch, M2 dual switch.
- Width: 30, 36, 42 or 48 inch opening; on a pair of doors, half of the total opening. A 30 inch device takes monitoring only with MLR.
- With finish 00, the US finish follows the width: US3, US4, US32 or US32D, and BSP (black suede powder) on the 8800.
- MEC adds matching end caps, for US finishes only; standard devices come with black metal end caps.
- Voltage on the 8800: 12 or 24, for the EL option.
So our 8801EL-36-24V is a clear anodized 8800 with solenoid latch retraction, 36 inch opening, 24 volts; our 8611MLR-36-24V is a clear anodized 8600 with motorized latch retraction, 36 inch opening. The catalog pages describe both devices as non-handed, for a minimum 2 inch stile, with bars that can be field cut to the next smallest opening width.
Adams Rite 2026 Parts Manual: faceplates, strikes and 8800 end caps
From the Parts Manual unless noted:
- MS1850S faceplate kits: 24-0384, then a shape digit (0 flat, 1 radius, 2 LH bevel, 3 RH bevel, 4 radius with weatherstrip), then 10 for the standard bolt or 20 for hookbolt and short bolt, then the finish (313, 335 or 628). Example: our 24-0384-020-335 (flat, hookbolt and short bolt).
- 4900 faceplates (4900 catalog page): 24-0137-01 flat, -02 radius, -03 radius with weatherstrip.
- Deadlatch strikes (also the strike catalog page): 4901 (long, flush mount) and 4902 (short box), -01 flat or -02 radius, in 119 (to match 335), 121 (to match 313) or 630 satin stainless, all unhanded. Example: our 4901-01-121.
- 8800 and 8600: hinge end metal end cap 41-0903-119 on both; latch end cap 41-0902-03-IP on the 8800 and nose end cap 41-0902-05-IP on the 8600; dogging assembly 31-0265-IP and dogging key 29-0481-MP on both. Push bars are ordered by series, door opening width and finish. Example: our 41-0902-03-IP.
End cap numbers starting 41-0901 or 41-0801 are not in the 2026 Parts Manual; for those, send us the full number and a photo.
