Baldwin Door Knockers, Bell Buttons, House Numbers and Door Viewers: Styles, Sizes and Finishes

The handleset is on the door, and the knocker, bell button and house numbers still have to match it. Baldwin lists each of these pieces by number with a three-digit finish code, so the match comes down to finding your handleset's code on the finish list of each piece. Not every finish is listed for every piece.

Baldwin door knockers: models and sizes

Our product pages name some knockers by finish alone, so go by the first four digits. The Baldwin Estate Price Book prints nine knocker numbers; sizes and bolt centers (the book's CTC of bolts) are in inches.

Number and nameSizeBolt centers
0102 Colonial6.5 x 3.54
0103 Colonial with Observascope6.5 x 3.54
0105 Knocker5.5 x 4.04
0113 S Knocker2 dia. base, 7.8 high, 2.8 deep4.75
0116 Imperial8.5 x 4.1254.75
0195 Ring4.25 x 5.53.75
0183 Contemporary4-9/32 x 5-29/325
0184 Modern2-1/2 x 64
0185 Modern with Observascope2-1/2 x 64

Sizes for the first six rows are in the order the book prints them. The last three come from dimensioned drawings, width first, and their bolt spacing is read from the same drawings. Observascope is Baldwin's name for its door viewer, so the 0103 and 0185 are the knockers listed with one.

The packing line for the 0102, 0103, 0105, 0113, 0116 and 0195 reads one in a box, poly-bagged, with proper fasteners for 1.75 inch thick doors. The Reserve Price Book prints the same note for the 0183, 0184 and 0185. These lines say nothing about other door thicknesses.

Baldwin bell buttons (doorbell buttons): four shapes

The four buttons are close in size and differ mainly in outline. These figures come from the drawings in the Estate book, in inches.

Number and shapeHeight x widthDepth
4860 Rectangular3.00 x 1.62.50
4861 Oval3.05 x 1.75.50
4862 Arch3.00 x 1.60.50
4863 Contemporary3 x 1-5/817/32

The bell button listings print no mounting note.

Baldwin house numbers: 0 to 9

Each digit is its own item, 90670.xxx.CD through 90679.xxx.CD, and the fifth digit of the number is the digit you get. The xxx is the finish, so our BAL_90671003 is house number 1 in finish 003. Count every digit in the address, repeats included.

The Estate book describes them as 4.75 inch tall solid forged brass residential house numbers applied with truss head wood screws, with a projection of .312 inch and fasteners included. Baldwin's General Hardware web page calls them 5 inch pieces. Our product pages say 4-3/4 inch, in line with the book.

Baldwin door viewers: 0155 and 0156

Baldwin prints the viewer's name two ways: Observascope in the Estate book, Observ-O-Scope in the Reserve item lines and the template list. You choose by door thickness:

  • 0155: doors under 2.25 inches thick
  • 0156: doors 2.25 to 3.25 inches thick

The book lists a .5 inch diameter lens, a field of vision exceeding 160 degrees and a shutter with all viewers. Its installation note asks for a .5 inch hole drilled completely through the door. Baldwin's template list gives A070 for the 0155 and A071 for the 0156.

Baldwin letter box plates and sleeves

The book calls the 0012 and 0014 package size, with an opening it says will accommodate small packages, and the 0015 and 0017 magazine size. In each pair, the second plate adds a covered hinging backplate.

NumberPlate (inches)Door prep opening
001213 x 3.62511.562 x 2.812
0014, hinging backplate13 x 3.62511.562 x 2.812
001510 x 38.25 x 2.375
0017, hinging backplate10 x 37.5 x 2

According to the book, the bronze spring on the 0012 and 0015 permits vertical installation, while the 0014 and 0017 are not suitable for it. On the 0012, 0014 and 0015 the millimeter figures printed beside the door prep openings do not agree with the inch figures, so go to Baldwin's template for the plate before any door is cut: A006 for the 0012, A008 for the 0014, A009 for the 0015 and A011 for the 0017.

The book also lists two stainless steel sleeves in finish 324, both for 1.75 inch thick doors: the 0050 fits the 0015 and 0017, and the 0052 fits the 0012 and 0014.

Matching your handleset: finish codes on these pieces

In an Estate number, the price book says, the three-digit finish follows the product number. Our guide to Baldwin model numbers and finish codes shows how to read Estate and Reserve numbers and lists the finish groups.

Thirteen codes appear on every knocker, bell button, house number and letter box plate in the Estate book: 003, 031, 033, 044, 050, 055, 056, 060, 076, 102, 112, 190 and 260. The rest depend on the piece:

CodeFinishListed for
077Heirloom Brass0102, 0103, 0195, 4860, 4861, 4862, house numbers
402Distressed Oil Rubbed BronzeAll knockers except 0183, all buttons except 4863, house numbers
140Polished Nickel0184, 0185
030Polished Brass0155, 0156

Door viewers are the exception. The book lists them only in 030 and 260, so a handleset in 003 Lifetime (PVD) Polished Brass has no viewer with the same code, because 030 and 003 are separate codes. 260 Polished Chrome is the one code the viewers share with the other pieces.

Our product pages sometimes use other names for a finish, for example Bright Brass for 030 and Unlacquered Brass for 031, which Baldwin calls Non-Lacquered Brass. Compare the code in the number.

If your handleset is Baldwin Reserve

The door accessories pages of the Reserve book show a shorter list. For the 0102, 0103, 0113, 0183, 0184, 0185 and 0195 knockers and all four bell buttons it prints 003, 031, 044, 055, 056, 112, 190, 260 and 402. Reserve finishes 150, 481 and 492 are not on that list. The same pages keep the viewers at 030 and 260, and they do not show the 0105 or 0116. The two books differ on 402: Reserve lists it for the 0183 and 4863, Estate does not.
