The thumbpiece on your Baldwin handleset is worn, the door turned out thicker than the set allows, or the door is bored for a different lock. Here is what Baldwin's Estate and Reserve price books list for each of those jobs. To read a number itself, with its finish code, use our Baldwin number guide.
Worn handleset: Baldwin 5399 repair kits
On page 107 of the Estate book, repair kits and thick door kits share the number 5399, so the last letter carries the difference: 5399.xxx.A is a thick door kit, 5399.xxx.G a repair kit. The xxx is the finish. For an active handleset, what sits on the inside of the door decides between G and H.
| Repair kit | Listed for |
|---|---|
| 5399.xxx.G | Active sectional and escutcheon handlesets with interior knobs: single cylinder (ENTR) and double cylinder (DBLC) |
| 5399.xxx.H | Active sectional and escutcheon handlesets with interior levers: single cylinder (LHRH) and double cylinder (LRDB) |
| 5399.xxx.K | Full dummy (FD or LRFD) sectional, escutcheon and emergency egress sets, Traditional oval thumbpiece, knobs or levers |
| 5399.xxx.M | Active emergency egress (ENTR): oval egress cartridge, Traditional oval thumbpiece, interior knob |
| 5399.xxx.N | Active emergency egress (LENT or RENT): rectangular egress cartridge, Traditional oval thumbpiece, interior lever |
Per Baldwin's tubular handleset brochure, on a sectional set the deadbolt is separate from the thumbpiece and grip; on a 3/4 or full escutcheon set the deadbolt and thumbpiece share one trim piece. A note under the kits says all parts must be installed for the lock to work properly.
When the trouble is the thumbpiece cartridge alone, the book also lists Thumbpiece Cartridge Kit 5300.000.005. It holds the cartridge only and is marked not compatible with 2-point handlesets.
Door thicker than the set allows: thick door kits
The same brochure gives 1-3/4 inches as the door thickness for Estate tubular entrance sets, with conversion kits for 2 and 2-1/4 inch doors. Two-point sets take 1-3/4 to 2 inch doors and cannot go on anything thicker. Check first whether yours is tubular or mortise.
| Thick door kit | For 2 and 2-1/4 inch doors |
|---|---|
| 5399.xxx.A | Sectional and escutcheon single cylinder entrance handlesets |
| 5399.xxx.B | Sectional and escutcheon double cylinder entrance handlesets |
| 5399.xxx.C | Emergency egress handlesets |
| 5399.xxx.D | Full dummy handle functions: sectional, escutcheon and emergency egress |
| 5399.xxx.E | Passage lever and knob sets |
| 5399.xxx.F | Privacy lever and knob sets |
Kits A to D include tailpieces if necessary, thru bolts, a strike plate and instructions; E and F (page 60) include spindles, fasteners, an adaptor if necessary, a strike plate and instructions. For a privacy set, extender 5199.000 lengthens the privacy button on doors over 1.75 inches thick, with escutcheon plates thicker than .25 inch, or both.
Ordering a spindle on its own? Baldwin lists straight spindles for passage sets, swivel for privacy and half spindles for front doors. Page 63 of the Estate book reads the length from door thickness and lock trim thickness; our number guide gives the numbers.
Estate deadbolts have their own brochure: the 8000 and 8200 series fit 1-3/4 inch doors, with kits for 2 and 2-1/4 inch doors. We list 8098000TP03 as a single cylinder turn piece conversion kit for 2 to 2-1/4 inch doors. For mortise sets, the Estate book's contents put thick door kits at page 142, which opens with a guide for 1.75 inch doors. Baldwin's mortise How to Order brochure says a door thicker than 1.75 inches needs 3 additional components and sends you to a sales associate with your door thickness and set details.
Baldwin Reserve thick door kits
Baldwin's Reserve sheets give 1-3/8 to 2 inches as standard for levers, 1-3/4 to 2 for deadbolts, and thick door kits up to 2-1/2 inches. Page 79 of the Reserve book lists:

Door bored for a different lock: 2-1/8 and 1-1/2 inch adapters
Baldwin spells it adaptor and recommends one by bore size and by what goes on the door:
| Adaptor | Door bore | Use with |
|---|---|---|
| 6503.009 | 2-1/8 inch | Knobs |
| 6504.009 | 2-1/8 inch | Lighter levers |
| 6507.009 | 2-1/8 inch | Heavy levers |
| 5086.009 | 1-1/2 inch | Knobs |
| 6501.009 | 1-1/2 inch | Lighter levers |
| 6511.009 | 1-1/2 inch | Heavy levers |
All six are listed for 1-3/8 and 1-3/4 inch doors, and the 1-1/2 inch group pairs with roses 2 inches or larger. The heavy lever list printed under the 2-1/8 inch group names 5112, 5113, 5116, 5118, 5125, 5162, 5167, 5173 and L023, L029, L030, L031, L032, L033, L034.
Baldwin's brochures say sectional sets fit a 2-1/8 inch face bore with no additional hardware, 8200 series deadbolts a 2-1/8 inch cutout, and 8000 series deadbolts 1-5/8 inches, with No. 8090 trim rings for 2-1/8 inch holes. Our door prep guide explains bore and backset.
Replacement latches
Page 107 of the Estate book lists two for tubular handlesets. 5300.xxx.9 is the adjustable latch. 5210.xxx is the universal deadlocking latch for keyed entry and two-point sets, with a 2.375 or 2.75 inch adjustable backset; it comes one per box without strike, fasteners or template.
Reserve latches are on the Latches + Fronts page (76) of the Reserve book. The Reserve lever sheet names four types: square corner adjustable, round corner, drive-in and 6-way adjustable.
Half dummy back plates and mortise lock parts
We list 5098.004.N as a half dummy back plate. The Estate book offers 5084.xxx.A, a rigid mounting spindle listed for a 1.375 inch door, as an optional through-bolt mounting in its place, for hollow core doors or where surface mounting is not recommended.
For mortise locks, page 166 lists yoke assemblies by backset, stop balls, springs and screws in packs, with numbers that start 8490.000.
Tools and instructions
Page 167 of the Estate book lists 8481.000, a 1/8 inch Allen wrench for set screws, and 8480.000, an aligning tool for trim on mortise locks and tubular latches. Our catalog also has a rose retainer wrench (532602800005) and a spanner tool (5198000A).
