A run of gasket has come out along a glass panel, or a hinge on an office glass door needs replacing, and the frame turns out to be a C.R. Laurence (CRL) Fallbrook partition. CRL names Fallbrook gaskets, nuts and fittings with short codes, and its installation instructions and brochure show which code belongs where. If the old part still carries a code, start from it. On the Extrusion Identification page of the Fallbrook instructions, CRL says an indicator label is placed on the inside or back side of each part before final packaging.
Fallbrook, Fallbrook XL or Fallbrook XL NY?
CRL's Fallbrook brochure covers three systems. Fallbrook has a slim floating door frame and is listed "For 5/16", 3/8", and 1/2" monolithic tempered glass". Fallbrook XL "Utilizes 1" insulating glass to mitigate sound" and has low-profile 1-7/8 inch framing. Fallbrook XL NY is a muntin grid system that CRL developed as a design option for Fallbrook XL.
Several XL parts carry an FX prefix. The XL hammer head nut is FXHHN, the XL striking plate is FXSP, and the XL door jamb gasket in the brochure is FXDJBL, where a Fallbrook frame takes FHHN or FHHN12, FSP and the FDJ gaskets. The prefix alone does not settle it, though. The FXCH corner connector is keyed to Fallbrook, XL and XL NY in both installation manuals, and so are the FRG push-in gaskets and the FFP, FFP14 and FFP16 glazing gaskets. The brochure's XL gasket list prints FFP14BL and FFP14GR as "Glazing gaskets for 1" glass" and lists FFP16BL and FFP16GR as another pair of XL glazing gaskets.
Fallbrook gaskets: FRGGR, FFPGR25, FDJGR and the other codes
The brochure lists three Fallbrook gaskets, each in black (BL) and grey (GR, spelled gray on CRL's product pages):
| Gasket | Black | Gray |
|---|---|---|
| Push-in glazing | FRGBL, FRGBL25 | FRGGR, FRGGR25 |
| Glazing | FFPBL, FFPBL25 | FFPGR, FFPGR25 |
| Door jamb | FDJBL, FDJBL25 | FDJGR, FDJGR25 |
On the CRL product pages we checked, the codes ending in 25 are the shorter rolls: FRGGR25 and FFPGR25 are sold per 25 meter roll, FRGGR and FDJGR per 50 meter roll. CRL's pages for FRGGR, FRGGR25 and FFPGR25 call each a component part for the Fallbrook and Fallbrook XL systems, while the FDJGR door jamb gasket page names only the Fallbrook system.
Watch the spelling in the installation instructions: in both manuals the parts keys print the gray glazing gasket as FFGR and FFGR25 in places, and page 10 prints the black one as FFBL, where the brochure prints FFPBL and FFPGR.
For the door jamb gasket, page 21 of the Fallbrook instructions shows how it is notched at each hinge and strike plate, and page 18 notes that the FDJ cutout depends on the door hinge type.
Which push-in glazing gasket fits the transom glass
The floating transom section of the Fallbrook instructions has a drawing for selecting the push-in glazing gasket by the thickness of the transom glass. It shows item 5 for 3/8" (10mm) glass and item 6 for 5/16" (8mm) glass. The parts list on page 23 identifies item 5 as FRGBL, FRGBL25, FRGGR or FRGGR25. Item 6 has no code of its own there: CRL shows it as included in the FCLPT3SA and FCLPT3MBL floating transom kits, which also include an FRG push-in gasket and an FFP glazing gasket.
For the FFP glazing gasket, page 10 states: "The Gasket FFBL / FFBL25 / FFPGR / FFPGR25 is suitable for 5/16'', 3/8'' and 1/2'' glass." The drawings below that sentence show how the gasket is set for each of the three thicknesses.
Hammer head nuts: FHHN, FHHN12 and FXHHN
On a Fallbrook door frame, the strike plate and the hinges are fixed with hammer head nuts that sit in the frame profile. CRL's FHHN page describes a pair of nuts with fasteners that have a thread lock coating, for use with the Fallbrook FSP strike plate or FH series hinges. The same page carries a warning: "Not for use with 1/2" (12 mm) glass doors, FHHN12 must be used with 1/2" (12 mm) glass doors".
Each nut also has a set position. The table on page 17 of the Fallbrook instructions gives a position code for the strike plate and for the door hinge, by glass thickness and by left or right hand door: A12 and B12 are FHHN positions, C13 and D13 are FHHN12 positions. Fallbrook XL doors use the FXHHN, which the brochure lists as Hammer head nut XL, with its own table of positions H1 to H4 on page 17 of the Fallbrook XL instructions. FTHHN1 and FTHHN1MBL belong to the floating transom: the brochure lists them as transom clips, and the transom pages of the Fallbrook instructions call them the supporting hammer head nuts (item 4, left and right).
Hinges, lock cases and lever sets
The Door Hardware and Components table in the brochure lists the Fallbrook door hardware in satin anodized (SA) and matte black (MBL):
| Part | Satin anodized | Matte black |
|---|---|---|
| Door hinge, square | FHSSA | FHSMBL |
| Lock case with cylinder | FLKSSA | FLKSMBL |
| Lock case, non-locking | FLSSA | FLSMBL |
| Set of levers, square | FLHSA | FLHMBL |
According to the brochure, the FHS hinge is not self-closing and the FLKS lock case includes a Europrofile cylinder. CRL's FLKSSA page calls the same part a Square Latch Housing with Keyed Cylinder, describes the lockset as non-handed and field reversible and links CRL's Lever Latch Handing Reversal Installation Instructions. Page 9 of both installation manuals, headed Glass Prep, shows the hole layout in the glass for the FLKS and FLS lock cases and for the FHS and FHD hinges with frame piece.
The number of hinges a door needs is set out in CRL's Fallbrook Door and Hinge Limitations sheet. It ties the hinge count to door weight and height, gives the maximum door width, height and weight, and shows recommended hinge locations. Read it before you change the hinges on a door.
