Detex V40 and ECL-230 Installation Instructions and Templates

Detex prints separate installation instructions for the V40 exit device, its alarm and delayed egress options and the ECL-230 exit control locks. This page links the official PDFs, summarizes each and shows how to pick the right one from the model number.

Detex installation instructions by model

The table links open PDFs on detex.com; revisions are those online on October 11, 2026. Detex's installation instructions index lists other devices and options.

The V40 is a Detex Value Series device. The Advantex 10 and 40 Series rim devices, such as our Detex 10-630-36, have their own instructions, 104881.

How to read a Detex V40 model number (V40 EB, V40xEB)

The codes are explained on the V40 How To Order sheet (January 10, 2024). Taking our Detex V40 EB LD KS 711 99 48 as the example:

  • V40 - rim device, wide stile (V40xNS is narrow stile).
  • EB - electric alarm with battery. EA is the hardwired electric alarm ("Formerly EH/EH R"), EE delayed egress.
  • LD - less/no dogging (HD is hex key dogging, CD cylinder key dogging).
  • KS - keystop.
  • 711 - device finish "Black, Aluminum" (628 is "Brushed Aluminum").
  • 99 - surface strike, standard on the V40 (98 is semi-mortise, standard on the V40xNS; 94 is double-door).
  • 48 - 48 inch wide door (36 for a 36 inch door).

A leading "H" is listed as "Hurricane" and "F" as "Fire Rated (Less/No Dogging Only)". The lowercase x is not a code on the sheet; Detex uses it to join codes, as in V40xNS, V40xW (weatherized), V40xEE and V40xEBxW, and prints V40 EB with a space on its catalog page. Read the same way, V40xEB is a V40 with the EB option.

Detex V40 installation instructions: what 101275 contains

  • Pages 2-4: parts list with order part numbers, hardware and tools. Our Detex 103065-1 is on the page 3 list as the 36 inch pushpad subassembly.
  • Page 5: door condition check with RHR and LHR door drawings (see our door handing chart).
  • Pages 6-7: mounting plate, 99 strike and device installation; page 6 recommends a unit centerline 40 inches above the finished floor.
  • Page 8: device clearance check, cut-off procedure and mortise cylinder installation.
  • Pages 9-10: 98 strike and 94 double door strike installation, both marked "(not approved for Hurricane models)", and strike hook installation.

V40 EB and EA alarm instructions (104947)

The electrical instructions cover the EB ("Exit Alarm (Battery only)"), EA, EX and EXV options and the weatherized EBxW, EXxW and EXVxW. Page 2 marks the rim device "See instruction 101275"; the page 3 parts list includes the 9V battery (PP-5567).

  • Page 4: unit arming test, low battery alert, dogging feature and silent arming. When the battery is low, the siren beeps and the red LED blinks at approximately 45 second intervals.
  • Pages 5-7: switch options, wiring details, cut-down procedure, power transfer methods and troubleshooting.

The EE delayed egress option has its own electrical instructions, 103185, with the riser diagram on page 6 and delayed egress operations on page 8. Its cover notice begins: "FOR SPECIAL LOCKING ARRANGEMENT: THIS PRODUCT MUST BE CONNECTED INTO A FIRE ALARM SYSTEM PER NFPA CODE OR OTHER REGULATIONS SO THAT, IN THE EVENT OF FIRE, THE TIME DELAY WILL BE BYPASSED. CONTACT YOUR LOCAL CODE AUTHORITY TO VERIFY COMPLIANCE WITH FIRE AND BUILDING CODES." See also our guides to exit device types and electrified door hardware.

Detex V40 door prep templates

Detex's V40 templates page lists a device template and, for devices with trim, a trim template. For the V40 and FV40 without trim it gives T1002 for metal doors, T1010 for aluminum doors and T1037 for wood doors.

  • T1002 (4-16-09) tabulates backset and recommended minimum stile by strike: with the 99 strike on a single door, a 2-1/4 inch backset and a 3-1/2 inch stile.
  • Page 5 of instruction 101275 prints a larger minimum door stile, 4-1/2 inches, for the wide stile device with a surface strike. If yours is in between, ask before ordering.

The electrified options table on the V40 templates page has rows such as V40xEBxW, V40xEE and V40xEH, but none for the non-weatherized EB, ED or ER EX; confirm the template for those with Detex or with us.

Detex exit control locks: ECL-230D and ECL-230X

ECL-230D and ECL-230D-PH (INS-230D/PM)

  • Pages 4-5: hardware, tools, application examples, door and frame preparation, backplate and keeper, outside (OKC) and inside (IKC) key control.
  • Pages 6-7: cam bridge, pushbar, 9V battery, cover and sign; testing and troubleshooting.
  • Pages 9-10: printed templates A (surface keeper) and B (semi-mortise keeper), with a note to confirm dimensions with a ruler before use.

Detex's ECL-230D templates page lists metal door templates only: T2109 (LHR) and T2110 (RHR) for the surface strike, T2115 (LHR) and T2116 (RHR) for the mortise strike. They place the bolt centerline 42-5/8 inches from the finished floor for LHR and 43-3/8 inches for RHR. In our ECL-230D W/#16 KEY title, the code means the number 16 cover lock cam and key.

ECL-230X (103132)

One document covers the single point ECL-230X, the two and three point versions and the H-ECL-230X. On the ECL-230X How To Order sheet (February 17, 2026), TD is top bolt and deadbolt, TB top and bottom bolt, TDB top bolt, deadbolt and bottom bolt, and W weatherized.

  • Pages 5-13: device applications, door condition check, template use, backplate, outside key control, trim, device, rim cylinder and deadbolt strike.
  • Pages 14-19: two and three point installation, battery and cover.
  • Pages 20-23: double door strike, troubleshooting, cutting the top rod, accessories and the outside trim template.

Detex's door prep templates page links three more: ECL-230X (Surface Strike Installation) is T2353, ECL-230X (Mortise Strike Installation) is T2355 and ECL-230X Trim Side Installation is T2354.
