Hickory Hardware Cabinet Hinges: How to Identify Your Hinge and Its Replacement

Need to replace a Hickory Hardware cabinet hinge? This guide follows the "How to Select Hinges" section of Hickory Hardware's Helpful Hints page and Hickory's product pages: what to read off the old hinge and the cabinet before you order, and which Hickory numbers belong to each hinge type.

Hickory's rule for replacement hinges

Hickory's guide says: "For replacements, choose a hinge that most closely matches or is the exact same model from the current hinge. New holes in the cabinet may be required if the model is not the same." If you know the Hickory number of the old hinge, start there. If you do not, use the points below to narrow it down.

What to check on the cabinet and the old hinge

  • Face frame or frameless. A face frame cabinet has a face built of vertical stiles and horizontal rails. A frameless cabinet has no face frame; its doors mount to the sides of the cabinet, and the guide says fully concealed hinges are used for them.
  • Door type. Flush or full inset: the door sits completely within the cabinet opening. Partial inset: partly in the opening, partly across the face of the cabinet. Partial overlay: attached to framed cabinetry, with the doors slightly apart so a piece of the face frame shows. Full overlay: fully across the face of the cabinet, with no reveal.
  • Visibility. Surface: the hinge mounting is visible on the outside of the cabinet. Concealed: the hinge is hidden on the inside of the cabinet, sometimes called a Euro (European) hinge. Semi-concealed: part of the hinge shows, typically the cabinet wing, while the door wing is concealed.
  • Closing. Self closing: the door closes by itself during the last few inches. Soft closing: it closes softly during the last few inches. Free swinging: no built-in closing mechanism; the door stays where it is left.
  • Wrap. Full wrap: the hinge wraps around three sides of the cabinet body. Partial wrap: around two sides.
  • Flush or inset door wing. Flush: the door wing mounts straight across the back of the door. Inset: the door wing is shaped to fit a 3/8 inch rabbet on doors for partial inset applications.
  • Single or double demountable. Single: the door comes off and the hinges stay on the cabinet, screwed to the cabinet face, with special incisions in the door. Double: the door can be removed and the hinges as well; they are mounted without screws, using incisions in both the door and the face frame.

The guide adds that the hinge you choose may have more than one trait.

How Hickory measures overlay

  1. Close the cabinet door.
  2. With a pencil, make a small mark on the cabinet frame directly against the hinged side of the door.
  3. Open (or remove) the door and measure from the pencil mark to the opening of the cabinet.

Hickory hinge numbers by type

The tables are a selection, not Hickory's full range. They combine the hinge chart in Hickory's guide with each number's Hickory product page; where the two differ, both are named.

Face frame hinges: surface, self mortise, wrap, demountable

NumberType; overlay or inset
P139Surface, free swinging; Variable overlay (product page)
P140Surface, free swinging; 3/8 inch inset
P143, P243, P295Surface, self-closing; 3/8 inch inset
P144, P244, P296Surface, self-closing; Guide: 3/8 inch inset. Product pages: variable overlay
P8293, P8294Self mortise, free swinging; Flush / full inset doors
P61030FSemi-concealed, partial wrap; 1/4 inch overlay, 3/8 inch inset
P60010FSemi-concealed, partial wrap; 1/4 inch overlay
P2710FSemi-concealed, partial wrap; 1/2 inch overlay

P5312Double demountable; 1/4 inch overlay, 3/8 inch inset
P5311Double demountable; 1/4 inch overlay
P5310Double demountable; 1/2 inch overlay

Where Hickory's sources differ: for P144, P244 and P296 the chart says 3/8 inch inset, while their product pages say variable overlay (the P143, P243 and P295 pages, and the P140 page for four of its five finishes, say "Variable overlay, 3/8 Inch Inset"; for P140-3 it prints no overlay or inset). The chart also files P139, P140 and the P143 and P144 groups under "Surface Mount Face Frame Hinges" and lists them as semi-concealed, and the P143-W and P144-AB dimension drawings say "Semi-Concealed" as well.

Not in the chart, as their own Hickory pages describe them: P9296 is a surface self-closing face frame hinge for variable overlay. P8290 is a mortise hinge for flush or full inset doors whose page says "May require machining or cutting depending on application". P5305 is a frameless full overlay concealed soft close hinge with a 105 degree opening, and HH75110-14 a frameless concealed self-closing hinge "For pie corner doors" with a 70 degree opening. The HH075216 to HH075228 concealed self-closing pages each print their own overlay or application: HH075216-14, for example, is a face frame hinge for 1/4 inch overlay with a 106 degree opening, HH075222-14 a frameless half overlay hinge with 110 degrees, and HH075228-14 is described as "For use with Clip On hinge".

Check the pack as well: the P244 page lists VP244-SN as "Satin Nickel, 20 Pack".

Concealed (Euro) hinges

For general concealed hinge terms (overlay, inset, opening angle, mounting plates), see our concealed cabinet hinges guide and our Richelieu cabinet hinges guide. Both cover other makers' hinges, such as Salice and Blum, not Hickory's.
