A hinge has to be replaced or added, and the old order or the hardware schedule reads something like 5BB1HW 4.5 x 4.5 NRP 630. That line carries four details: the Ives model, the size, an option and the finish. Here is how Ives (Allegion) prints each of them in its current Price Book 17, so you can order a hinge that matches.
Ives hinge models: 5BB1, 5BB1HW, 5PB1, 3PB1, 3CB1
The price book does not spell out the letters, but its descriptions follow them. In the six models below the first digit is the number of knuckles, BB goes with ball bearing, PB with plain bearing and HW with heavy weight. The last column is Ives' note on the door each model is for.
| Model | Knuckles, bearing | Door weight, use |
|---|---|---|
| 5BB1 | 5, ball bearing | standard, medium frequency |
| 5BB1 HW | 5, ball bearing | heavy, medium frequency |
| 5PB1 | 5, plain bearing | standard, low frequency |
| 3PB1 | 3, plain bearing | standard, medium frequency |
| 3CB1 HW | 3, concealed bearing | heavy, medium frequency |
| 3CB1 | 3, see below | standard, medium frequency |
All six come in steel with a steel pin, brass with a brass pin or stainless steel with a stainless pin. One entry needs care: the 3CB1 HW and the wide throw 3CB1 WT are described as concealed bearing hinges, yet the standard weight 3CB1 entry prints plain bearing. If the bearing decides your order, call us first.
The same section lists the 3SP1, a standard weight spring hinge in steel or stainless steel. Continuous hinges, pivots and other types are compared in our door hinge types guide.
Hinge size: 4.5 x 4.5 and the other Ives sizes
Ives gives sizes in inches with millimeters in parentheses, such as 4.5 x 4.5 in. (114 x 114 mm). The price book does not say which figure is the height. Hager puts height first and width second (see our hinge types guide), and our data lists the 5BB1 WT 4.5 x 6.0 as 6 inches wide. Sizes listed, in inches:
| Model | Sizes listed |
|---|---|
| 5BB1, 3CB1 | 3.5 x 3.5, 4 x 4, 4.5 x 4, 4.5 x 4.5, 5 x 4.5, 5 x 5 |
| 5BB1 HW, 3CB1 HW | 4.5 x 4, 4.5 x 4.5, 5 x 4.5, 5 x 5 |
| 3PB1, 5PB1 | 3.5 x 3.5, 4 x 4, 4.5 x 4, 4.5 x 4.5, 5 x 4.5 |
| 3SP1 | 4 x 4, 4.5 x 4, 4.5 x 4.5 |
| 5BB1 WT, 3CB1 WT | 4.5 x 5, 4.5 x 6, 5 x 6, 5 x 7, 5 x 8 |
| 5BB1 SC, 5BB1 HWSC | 4.5 or 5 |
Wide throw (WT) hinges are listed in steel only. Swing clear hinges carry a single size figure and come with a square edge (5BB1 SC, 5BB1 HWSC) or a beveled edge (5BB1 BSC, 5BB1 HWBSC). The price book prints no table that sizes the hinge to the door. Hager does, and our guide to replacing a Hager butt hinge shows it as Hager's guidance.
Finish codes: 652, 626, 630 and the base metal
On Ives architectural hinges the finish code also tells you the base metal. The hinge tables put each finish in a steel column or a brass and stainless column, next to its US reference code. A selection:
| Finish (US code) | Steel | Brass or stainless |
|---|---|---|
| Satin chrome (US26D) | 652 | 626 |
| Bright brass (US3) | 632 | 605 |
| Dark bronze, oil rubbed (US10B) | 640 | 613 |
| Satin nickel (US15) | 646 | 619 |
| Matte black (US19) | F-BLK | B-BLK |
| Satin stainless (US32D) | - | 630 |
| Primed for paint (USP) | 600 | - |
So 626 means a brass hinge, 652 a steel hinge with the same satin chrome look, and 630 stainless steel. The finish cross-reference at the front of the price book gives F-BLK the BHMA number 631 on steel and B-BLK 622 on brass or bronze, so a hinge named 5BB1HW 4.5X4.5 B-BLK is brass. Other brands are compared in our door hardware finish codes chart.
NRP and the other options: HT, RC, SH, SEC, TW
Options listed for most hinges, with the code to specify:
- NRP - non-removable pin, listed for all six models in the first table.
- HT - hospital tip. Ives notes that hospital tips come with non-removable pins, so NRP need not be added.
- RC - round corners, ordered as RC 1/4 or RC 5/8, the radius in inches.
- SH - security studs, which include NRP.
- SEC - security screws, machine screws only.
- TW4, TW8, TW12 - electric through-wire with 4, 8 or 12 wires. TW4M and TW8M add a monitor; MON is listed as monitor.
Through-wire is not offered on the 3PB1, 3SP1 or 5PB1, nor together with security studs. TW and MON are not available on 3.5 x 3.5 hinges, and MON not on 4 x 4 or smaller. TW4, TW8 and TW12 three and five knuckle hinges come standard with the Allegion Connect 8-pin connector, the CON in names such as 5BB1 4.5X4.5 639 TW8M CON. Our electrified hinges category lists them with power transfers.
How our product names write an Ives hinge number
Some of our names keep the parts apart, as in 5BB1HW 4.5X4.5 B-BLK. Others run them together and give the size in the title or on the product page: 5BB1412652 is a 4-1/2 x 4-1/2 inch 5BB1 in 652, 5BB14652 a 4 x 4 one, and 5BB1HW412630NRP a 4-1/2 x 4-1/2 inch 5BB1 HW in 630 with a non-removable pin. This is a pattern in our names, not an Ives rule, so check the size on the product page.
Ives residential hinges: 1010RP to 1021RP
Ives' residential section lists steel hinges sold in packages of 3. The 1010RP (square corners), 1011RP (5/8 inch radius) and 1012RP (1/4 inch radius) are 3.5 inches; the 1020RP (square) and 1021RP (5/8 inch radius) are 4 inches. RP means removable pin, which the price book calls compatible with hinge pin door stops. Finishes take an F- prefix, as in 1011RP F-619E, which our names write as 1011RPF619E. Here F- marks steel: F-619E is BHMA 646 and F-626E is 652, not brass.
Screws and the Ives range on our site
Lost the screws? For the 3CB1, 3PB1, 3SP1, 5BB1, 5BB1SC and 5PB1, the parts section of the price book lists mounting packages and packs of 100 screws by finish, each under an HGPART number. Other Ives hardware is on our Ives brand page, and butt hinges from Ives and other makers are grouped under butt and mortise hinges.
