Ives Wall Stops and Floor Stops: WS406, WS407, FS436, FS18 and the Installation Instructions

A lever has left a dent in the drywall, or an old floor stop has worked loose from the slab, and the replacement has to be ordered by its Ives number. That number depends on where the door can be stopped and on what the stop will be fastened into.

Wall, floor or overhead: how Ives decides

The Ives 101 page on door stops sorts the choice by the space around the door. A wall stop is for a door that opens against a wall. A floor stop suits places where a wall stop is impractical, such as a high-traffic area, and has to be placed so nobody trips over it. With cabinetry or furniture behind the door, Ives points to an overhead stop. It also warns that relying on the door closer alone can damage the closer and the door. On fire doors, the page rules out mechanical hold-open features such as hook stops, plunger stops and kick-down holders, because those doors must close automatically in a fire.

Overhead stops are covered in our ABH overhead stop and holder templates guide, and the general differences between stops and holders in door stops and holders explained.

Ives wall bumpers: WS401/402, WS404, WS406/407 and 411R-W

WS406/407Wrought brass or stainless2-1/2 in, 1 in
411R-WWhite rubber, adhesive1-7/8 in, 1-1/16 in

The WS401/402 and WS406/407 come with a convex (CVX) or concave (CCV) rubber; the WS404 is convex only. According to Ives, the concave bumper avoids damage to locks with projecting buttons. The adhesive 411R-W, also concave, is for clean, smooth, flat surfaces only. Ives describes the WS404 mounting as totally concealed and the WS406/407 as concealed and tamper-proof.

WS406 or WS407? One part, two sets of fasteners

The catalog notes that WS406/407 is the full part number and that 406 and 407 are not different products; the same goes for WS401/402. The instruction sheets still give two sets of steps (screw codes as printed by Ives):

  • WS401 and WS406: a #10 x 1 inch FPHSMS screw in a #10 plastic anchor.
  • WS402 and WS407: a #8 x 1-1/4 inch OPHWS screw with a drywall anchor.

The catalog says these bumpers are packed with fasteners for drywall or wood applications, while the current price book describes them with drywall and masonry anchors.

Projecting wall stops: the wall picks the number

The WS11, WS443, WS447 and WS65 project 3-11/16 to 3-3/4 inches from the wall. The WS11 and WS11X, and the WS447 and WS443, are pairs: one number for drywall or wood, one for heavy duty masonry. Their instruction sheets list the fasteners:

  • WS447, drywall or wood: three #12 x 1-1/4 inch OPHSMS screws with plastic expansion shields.
  • WS443, masonry: a 3/8-12 threaded stud in a lead shield, plus a #8 x 1 inch OPHWS screw in a second lead shield.
  • WS11, drywall or wood: three #10 x 1 inch FPHSMS screws with plastic expansion shields.
  • WS11X, masonry: one 5/16-18 screw with a lead expansion shield.
  • WS65, wood: a cast aluminum stop with two #10 x 3/4 inch OPHSMS screws.

Floor stops: dome height, risers and undercut doors

Dome stops are chosen by what lies under the door:

ModelHeightCatalog note
FS4361 inDoors without threshold
FS4381-3/8 inThreshold or undercut doors
FS131 inWhere no threshold is used
FS171-11/32 inOne piece, for thresholds
FS4391-1/2 inUniversal, high or low rise

The FS436 and FS438 are packed with fasteners for light duty masonry and wood, the FS13 and FS17 with fasteners for all types of floor construction, concrete included. For carpet, the aluminum R435 riser goes under an FS436 and the R437 under an FS438, in heights from 1/4 inch to 1 inch. The 5/16 inch R14 riser adapts the FS13 to threshold use.

The FS436 and FS438 installation template names the risers FS435 and FS437, so expect either number. Its screw table lists standard, Tampin and lead shield sets, and 2-1/4 inch screws with the riser drawn on the sheet. The catalog says the risers are packed with fasteners for heavy duty masonry and wood.

Several other floor stops are specified by door undercut. The FS441 and the steel FS434 take an undercut up to 1-1/2 inches, the 3 inch tall FS444 and FS448 up to 2-1/2 inches. The FS444 is packed for heavy duty masonry, and its sheet lists a 3/8-12 threaded stud in a lead expansion shield plus a #8 screw and lead anchor. The FS448 is the wood version, with three #12 x 1-1/4 inch OPHWS screws.

Security stops: FS18S and FS18L

The FS18 is molded from a black, flame resistant, resilient material around a heavy-duty stud, and once grouted in concrete it leaves no exposed fasteners. Ives designs it for high vandalism areas and recommends it for jail or security cell areas. The FS18S stands 1-1/2 inches high; the FS18L stands 3-1/2 inches and also suits concrete walls. Their instruction sheets show the stud grouted into a drilled hole and name the recommended grout.

Finish codes on Ives stops

The catalog finish tables for the brass stops use codes such as 605 (US3), 606 (US4), 613 (US10B), 625 (US26) and 626 (US26D); some models also list 619 (US15), aged bronze 643E/716 and matte black 622, which Ives writes as BLK. The current price book shows which finishes each model is sold in. Satin stainless 630 (US32D) is listed for the WS406/407 and the FS439. In our product names, such as WS406407CCV26D, the finish code follows the model: here a WS406/407CCV in 626 (US26D). Our door hardware finish codes chart explains the BHMA numbers and pairs 622 with US19, which Ives prints as BLK.

Where Ives publishes the installation instructions

The Ives door stops, holders and silencers 101 page links a template index for floor stops, wall stops, bumpers and silencers (PDF). It lists the sheets by template number, for example INST.WS406-407, INST.WS443-447, INST.FS435-438 for the dome stops with risers, INST.FS444-448 and INST.FS18S.

The index has no sheet for the FS13, FS17, FS410 and FS439 floor stops or the 411R-W bumper; for those, the Ives catalog gives specifications only.
