On a pair of doors with flush bolts in the inactive leaf, the active leaf usually latches into a strike on the inactive leaf's edge, so the inactive leaf has to shut first. A door coordinator at the head of the frame holds the active leaf back until it does. An Ives COR order needs a size and a finish. A filler bar is optional; some openings also need a mounting bracket, or a factory cutout and the active door size for vertical rod exit devices.
What an Ives COR coordinator does
The COR is a bar coordinator fastened to the stop at the head of the frame. Its lever nearest the active stop holds the active door open until the closing inactive leaf releases the trigger.
The catalog says all COR units are compatible with flush bolts (see our Ives flush bolt templates guide) but do not function correctly with swing-clear hinges; with 3/4 inch offset pivots it asks you to consult the factory.
Ives door coordinator sizes: COR32 to COR72
The number after COR is the channel length in inches. The catalog gives each size a range of opening widths and a common pair of doors:
| Model | Opening width | Common pair |
|---|---|---|
| COR32 | 34 to 52 in. | Two 24 in. doors |
| COR42 | 52 to 72 in. | Two 30 in. doors |
| COR52 | 62 to 92 in. | Two 36 in. doors |
| COR60 | 70 to 108 in. | Two 42 in. doors |
| COR72 | 84 to 132 in. | Two 48 in. doors |
How to size a COR coordinator for a pair of doors
Start with the active door width (X) and the frame opening between the stops (F). Ives prefers a coordinator about as long as X plus half the inactive door width. It must be 6 inches longer than the active door and shorter than F. Three of the catalog's examples, all with 5/8 inch stops:
- Pair of 30 inch doors, F = 58-3/4 inches: COR42
- Pair of 36 inch doors, F = 70-3/4 inches: COR52
- 36 inch active and 18 inch inactive door, F = 52-3/4 inches: COR42
FL20, FL32 and FL44 filler bars
A COR does not cover the whole stop. The instructions mount it flush against the stop on the active side and fill the gap between its end and the frame on the inactive side with a filler bar. FL bars come in 20, 32 and 44 inch lengths, 1-5/8 by 5/8 inches in section, and are cut to length on site.
Take the pair of 36 inch doors: a COR52 in a 70-3/4 inch opening leaves 18-3/4 inches uncovered, and the FL20 is the shortest bar that covers it. The price book also lists them together under one number, such as COR52 US28 w/FL20.
Mounting brackets for parallel arm closers and exit device strikes
A mounting bracket keeps the screws of a parallel arm closer or other hardware fastened to the same stop out of the coordinator's mechanism. The catalog lists the MB1 and MB2 for hardware such as a parallel arm closer or a non-fire-rated surface vertical rod strike, and the F and V brackets for surface vertical rod exit device strikes, the V versions for the Von Duprin 8827-F soffit latch.
| Bracket | Stop width | Jamb depth |
|---|---|---|
| MB1 | Over 2-1/2 in. | 4-3/4 in. min. |
| MB2 | Up to 2-1/2 in. | 4-3/4 in. min. |
| MB1F, MB1V | 1-1/2 to 2-1/4 in. | 5 in. |
| MB2F, MB2V | 2-3/8 to 3-1/4 in. | 5-7/8 in. |
| MB3F, MB3V | Over 3-3/8 in. | 6-7/8 in. |
The catalog notes that stop-mounted hardware has to be lowered to clear the coordinator and bracket. For the MB1 and MB2, INST.COR gives 15/16 inch for lowering the mounting holes of the door-applied hardware and warns never to drill into the coordinator. It sends the F and V brackets to separate instructions.
Pairs with vertical rod exit devices
With some surface or concealed vertical rod exit devices (see our exit device types guide), the coordinator needs a factory cutout. The table shortens the catalog chart; the -F and F- versions of these numbers share the same rows.
| Exit device | Cutout |
|---|---|
| Von Duprin 5547-F | Type A |
| Von Duprin 8827-F | Type B, plus MB1V, MB2V or MB3V |
| Von Duprin 8847-F | Type C |
| Von Duprin 33/3547, 33/3548, 98/9947, 98/9948 | Type D |
| Von Duprin 33/3547WDC, 98/9947WDC | Type E |
| Falcon 17-C, 18-C, 24-C, 25-C | Type F |
| The same Falcon devices with WDC | Type G |
The chart's largest active door is 33 inches for a COR42, 43 for a COR52, 51 for a COR60 and 63 to 66 for a COR72, depending on the device; there is no COR32 row. For an unlisted device Ives asks for its maker and model, both door widths, its backset, the stop width and the stop thickness if not 5/8 inch.
COR7G and COR9G gravity coordinators
A gravity coordinator does the same job with an arm on the head jamb. A strike plate on top of the closing inactive door meets a cam and lifts the arm, which frees the active door. The catalog lists the COR7G (7 inch projection) and COR9G (9 inch) as non-handed, so no door hand is needed (see our door handing chart). Size depends on where the astragal is (see our guide to door astragal types):
| Astragal on | COR7G | COR9G |
|---|---|---|
| Active door | Up to 4 ft | Over 4 ft |
| Inactive door | Up to 3 ft 4 in. | Over 3 ft 4 in. |
| Both doors | Up to 2 ft 10 in. | Over 2 ft 10 in. |
