Pemko Thresholds Explained: How to Read Saddle, Half Saddle, Panic, Thermal Break, Interlocking and Ramp Numbers

The old threshold is worn through at the door line, or the hardware schedule just says 2005AT. A Pemko threshold number carries most of what the order needs: profile, finish, seal and length. Split it into those parts and the catalog drawing fills in the rest.

How to read a Pemko threshold number

Pemko's full line catalog, the Markar and Pemko Catalog (PDF), asks for four things on an order: profile number, finish, insert and length. Its own example is 2005 A T 36, the 2005 profile in A finish with a T insert, 36 inches long. In the catalog the finish position is printed as an underscore, as in 2005_T or 171_.

The table is a selection of numbers we list; the length in inches follows at the end, as in our 2005AT72.

NumberProfile, finishInsert
2005AT2005, AT ThermoSeal
2005AV2005, AV Eco-V
171A171, Anone
271D271, Dnone
253x3AFG253x3, A, FGnone
114A114, Anone

Finish letters on threshold pages include A mill finish aluminum, B mill finish extruded bronze (brass), D dark bronze anodized, AK mill finish aluminum with PemKote non-slip coating, BSP and WSP black and white suede powder coat, and 10BE satin bronze powder coat. Each profile lists its own available finishes.

Insert letters name the seal, for example T for ThermoSeal, V for Eco-V, P for pile, PK for PemkoPrene, S for SiliconSeal or sponge silicone. Some profiles join two numbers with an x, such as 253x3_FG or 254x226_T; order them exactly as printed.

Unless an exact net cut size is specified, the catalog says thresholds come 1/2 inch longer up to 47 inches and 1 inch longer from 48 inches, for fitting on site.

Saddle, half saddle and offset saddle sizes

The profile number fixes height and width. A selection, in inches, from the catalog drawings:

ProfileTypeHeight x width
270 to 272Saddle1/4 x 4, 5, 6
170 to 172Saddle1/2 x 4, 5, 6
176Saddle1/2 x 7
2548Saddle1/2 x 8
273Half saddle1/4 x 3
254, 255Half saddle1/2 x 4, 5
158Offset saddle1/2 x 5-1/2
157Offset saddle3/4 x 5-1/2

Pemko's website describes the 253 to 256 half saddles as filling a 1/2 inch floor offset and the 273 a 1/4 inch one. Offset saddles are drawn higher on one side, and the same site gives the 158 for a 1/4 inch change in floor height, the 157 for 1/2 inch.

Latching panic saddles: 2005AT and its relatives

These saddles work with a surface applied vertical rod exit device (see our exit device types guide), or as a stop and a seal at the bottom of the door. Each drawing states the door clearance to allow (a selection, in inches):

ProfileWidthDoor clearance
2001_T51/4
2005_T, 2006_T53/8
179_T51/2
177_T55/8
181_T53/4
185_T3-1/23/4

If only the seal is worn, the catalog lists T5 as the replacement insert for every T version above, P2 for pile and EV41 for Eco-V. Pemko's 2005 Series page carries cut sheets, CAD drawings and installation instructions for the T, P and V versions.

Thermal break thresholds: what FG means

FG stands for Frost Guard. A black rigid polypropylene key between the extrusions provides the thermal break, and FG follows the finish code. So 253x3AFG is the 253x3 profile in A finish with the key, drawn 1/2 inch high and 6-1/8 inches wide. Panic saddles have thermal break versions too, such as the 253x226_FGT with a ThermoSeal insert and 5/8 inch door clearance.

Interlocking thresholds, caps and hooks

An interlocking threshold engages a hook on the bottom of the door. The 114_ is drawn 1/2 inch high and 4-1/4 inches wide, in A, B or D, and the catalog says interlocking thresholds and caps come with #61 hooks and nails. Caps such as the 101_ are typically mounted on an existing saddle-type threshold to create an interlock with a J-hook or L-hook. Water return versions send water back outside through weep holes; the aluminum water return pan has its own product number, PAN.

ADA notes and modular ramps

Pemko marks barrier-free products with a wheelchair symbol. According to the catalog, products with it have installed height differences of no more than 1/2 inch with allowable edge and slope conditions. Every profile in the saddle table above carries it except the 157. In the panic table only the 2005_T and 2006_T do, and the catalog notes that the 2006_T is only ADA compliant when installed butted to 1/4 inch tile or other floor material. A given opening's rules come from the project and the local code official.

For changes in floor level over 1/2 inch the catalog points to its modular ramps, numbered left to right: R for ramp, the floor offset (.5 to 2.25 inches for flush ramps), F for flush or OS and OSS for up-and-over offsets with a 7 or 3-1/2 inch top plate, MR when a pair of miter returns is included, then the finish, such as A or AK. Our R.75FAK48 is the flush ramp for a 3/4 inch offset in AK. The catalog says the assemblies accommodate 1/2 to 2-1/4 inch offsets in meeting the ADA 1:12 slope requirements, and that miter returns are not ADA compliant.

Fasteners, holes and anchors

As standard, Pemko thresholds are punched on 12 inch centers, with a double row over 8 inches wide, and generally come with #10 flat head screws. For material without holes, the catalog says to state "No Holes" on the purchase order line. The option tables in Pemko's current price book list other fasteners by code, among them:

  • MSES10, MSES25: #10 or 1/4-20 machine screws with expansion shields (MSES10SS, MSES25SS in stainless)
  • MS10, MS25: machine screws only, no anchors
  • WSLS10: #10 wood screws with lead shields
  • WSxPLA10: #10 wood screws with plastic anchors
  • FHSL14: 1/4-20 x 2 flat head sleeve anchors

The same tables say all thermal barrier saddle thresholds, such as the 253x3AFG, need two rows of fasteners. For installation, follow Pemko's instructions for the series.
