This page helps you identify replacement door hardware for a restroom stall: hinges, latches, and strikes and keepers. It shows what to read off the old hardware and the stall before ordering a replacement, in the terms of Jacknob's catalog and product pages, and where those details appear on our Jacknob pages.
Door swing and hand on a restroom stall door
Jacknob's Restroom Partition Hardware catalog (PDF, 172 pages, back cover number 111124) explains this on page 28: stand outside and face the stall. The side of the door the hinges are installed on gives the hand; then see whether the door swings in to the stall or out from the stall. The diagram labels four doors: Left Hand In, Right Hand In, Left Hand Out and Right Hand Out.
Part names shorten these to LH-In, RH-In, LH-Out and RH-Out, and a hinge name can carry two: 7093 is RH-In/LH-Out, and Jacknob's surface mounted hinge page says a right hand inswing hinge is also used for left hand outswing.
Our door handing chart explains LH, RH, LHR and RHR for regular doors. Jacknob pairs the hand with In or Out instead, so order partition hardware by Jacknob's wording.
Door and pilaster (post) thickness
Jacknob's catalog writes "pilaster (post)", and its website menu sorts door hardware kits into ten door and post combinations, from 1/2 inch door and 3/4 inch post to 1 inch door and 1-1/4 inch post, so measure both. Note the post edge too: Jacknob lists pivot hinges for square posts, round posts and flats, and the catalog sorts inswing, outswing and concealed latch strikes and keepers by square pilaster mount, round pilaster mount and flat wall mount.
Replacement hinges: surface mounted, pivot, wrap around and piano
- Surface mounted hinges - on Jacknob's page, typically sets with an active top hinge (gravity closes the door) and an inactive bottom hinge, and typically handed. The catalog lists two hinge sets (one top, one bottom assembly) and three hinge sets (two top, one bottom); 7893, named 2T/1B of 7103, is a three hinge set. Names may add RD. BARREL (Round Barrel in our titles) or SQUARE BARREL.
- Pivot hinges - Jacknob's square post and round post pages also call them wrap around gravity pivot hinges: the hinge wraps around the edge of the post. The diagram on catalog page 19 names the parts: top hinge, top hinge pin, top door insert, bottom door insert, cam, pintle and bottom hinge. The catalog recommends replacing pintles and cams at the same time and lists replacement kits for the top assembly, the bottom assembly or both.
- Wrap around hinges - a separate group in the catalog (page 27): extruded aluminum two and three hinge sets for 1 inch doors and pilasters. Jacknob's website lists 8974 under Aluminum Hinge Sets: our Jacknob 8974 Aluminum Wrap Hinge.
- Piano (continuous) hinges - usually the full length of the door. Jacknob's page says spring loaded piano hinges are typically handed and cam close piano hinges are not.
Note who made the partition, if you know: the catalog has a Compatibility column, and Jacknob lists replacement hinge pack 63150 for Bobrick. For Bradley's own part numbers see our Bradley partition parts guide.
Latches: surface mounted, concealed and indicator
- Surface mounted latches are mounted on the surface of the stall door. The catalog lists them by bar style (slide bar or throw bar), swing and hole centers (Hole C/C).
- Concealed latches have the bar installed inside the door. Jacknob describes them as usually a knob set with a bar, or a knob set only when the mechanism is pre-built into the door by the manufacturer.
- Indicator latches show whether the stall is occupied (red) or unoccupied (green).
The catalog also lists Latch Fix-It Kits, which convert a 1 inch door from a concealed latch to a slide latch: round edge kits for steel doors and square edge kits for plastic laminated or wood doors.
Strike versus keeper
According to the catalog, a strike and keeper pair works with the door latch to help secure the door while the stall is occupied, and a rubber insert on the strike helps protect the door. On outswing doors the latch bar slides over the strike portion; with a concealed latch it slides into the strike and keeper.
Single parts are on catalog page 80: keepers only "should be used with a matching strike", and strikes only "can be used without a matching keeper on outswing doors".
What a partition door hardware pack includes
Jacknob lists door hardware kits as inswing or outswing. On our product pages for the packs named below, the description includes the parts list. Two outswing examples:
- Jacknob 20430 LH-Out Door Hardware 1/2" Door 3/4" Post (7011) - 6 items: surface hinge (7011), slide latch, strike for door, door pull, two prong coat hook and a box.
- Jacknob 21300 Outswing Door Hardware, 1 inch door and post - 11 items: top and bottom hinge brackets, top and bottom door inserts, cam, hinge pin, slide latch, strike for door, door pull, two prong coat hook and a box.
Both outswing lists name a strike for the door and a door pull; the inswing pack Jacknob 11503 lists a strike and keeper (inswing) and a combination bumper coat hook. The lists do not show screws; ask us if you need the fasteners confirmed.
Toilet partition door stops
The catalog lists rubber tipped bumper door stops for door mount, such as Jacknob 4129, and for pilaster mount, such as Jacknob 4153.
