The closer on your door is worn out, or the hardware schedule calls for an LCN closer, and the item numbers look alike: 4040XP-RW/PA 695, 4111-EDA RH 689, 1461-RW/PA 689, 3133-STD LH 689. Each one names a model, an arm or track, a finish and, where LCN requires it, a hand.
Start with where the closer mounts
LCN's selection chart, Choosing the Right Closer, starts from whether the door faces the exterior and whether the closer is surface mounted, concealed or high security, then splits surface closers by traffic and mounting. The 4040XP and 1460 catalogs name three mountings:
- Hinge mount, pull side: on the side you pull the door from, which LCN also calls the hinge side or in-swing side.
- Top jamb, push side: on the frame face, on the stop side of the frame.
- Parallel arm, push side: a double lever arm whose main arm lies parallel to the closed door.
LCN 4040XP, 4010, 4110, 1460 and 3130 compared
| Series | Mounting | Handing |
|---|---|---|
| 4040XP | Pull side, top jamb, parallel arm | Non-handed |
| 4010 (4011, 4016) | Pull side | Handed |
| 4110 (4111, 4116) | Parallel arm | Handed |
| 1460 (1461) | Pull side, top jamb, parallel arm | Non-handed |
| 3130 (3131-3133) | Concealed in the door | Handed |
On the chart's exterior page, high traffic cast iron closers divide into handed and non-handed. Each handed model is built for one mounting: the 4010 goes on the pull side and the 4110 in parallel arm. The 4040XP is the non-handed choice there for all three mountings. The 1460 is also cast iron, non-handed and mounts three ways, but the chart lists it under medium traffic, and LCN's catalogs give it a 1-1/4 inch piston against 1-1/2 inch in the 4040XP.
The 4010 and 4110 are ordered as a 4011 or 4111, adjustable from size 1 to 5, or a 4016 or 4116 for size 6 only. The 1460 is ordered as model 1461; it and the 4040XP adjust from size 1 to 6. All of these adjustable models ship set to size 3. Our door closer types guide explains sizes and delayed action.
The 3130 is concealed in the top rail of a 1-3/4 inch interior door, with a single lever arm and roller assembly working in a track concealed in the head frame. It comes in sizes 1, 2 and 3 (3131, 3132, 3133), and its closing power is not adjustable. A standard track is included; tracks with bumper (BUMP) or hold open (H, HBMP) are options. LCN asks for a top rail of at least 4 inches, and says to consult the door manufacturer before fitting it in a wood door and the factory for doors on pivots.
LCN arm codes: REG, RW/PA, EDA, CUSH and hold open arms
Our product cards write LCN's REGARM and RWPA as REG and RW/PA. From LCN's documents:
- REG, regular arm: a double lever arm without hold open. On the 4040XP it mounts pull side or top jamb.
- RW/PA, regular arm with parallel arm bracket. For the 4040XP and 1460, the catalogs say parallel arm closers include the 62PA shoe that a parallel arm mount requires.
- EDA, extra duty arm: main arm and forearm of solid forged steel, for potentially abusive installations.
- CUSH, Cush-n-Stop arm: forged steel arms with a stop in the soffit shoe. On a 4040XP parallel arm mount the catalog gives 110 degrees maximum opening with CUSH arms, 180 with the others.
- Hold open arms such as H, HWPA, HEDA and HCUSH. The HEDA is handed, with the hold open adjusted at the shoe; on the HCUSH a handle controls it.
In the arm listings of the 4040XP, 4110 and 1460 catalogs, every hold open arm has a -3049 number and every other arm a -3077 number. More suffixes are in our LCN door closer parts guide.
LCN's 4000 and 1000 Series catalogs state that the UL listing of these closers covers self-closing doors without hold open, and LCN's current 4040XP installation instructions warn that hold open arms must not be installed on fire treated doors.
How to read an LCN item number on our site
- LCN 4040XP-RW/PA 695: 4040XP Series, regular arm with parallel arm bracket, 695 dark bronze. No hand, since the 4040XP is non-handed.
- LCN 4111-EDA RH 689: 4110 Series with the 4111 cylinder, extra duty arm, right hand, 689 aluminum.
- LCN 3133-STD LH 689: 3130 Series, size 3, standard track, left hand.
- LCN 4041DEL-RW/PA 689: a 4040XP with the delayed action cylinder, which the price book orders as model 4041.
In LCN's powder coat range 689 is aluminum, 693 gloss black and 695 dark bronze; plated finishes require a metal cover, the price book notes. Our finish codes chart lists more LCN finish numbers.
What to check on the door before you order
- Door width and exposure. LCN sizes a closer by door width, with separate tables for exterior and interior doors. The 4000 Series catalog adds that its closers are not designed for exterior mounting or exposure to the elements.
- Hand, for the 4010, 4110, 3130, HEDA arms and a 4040XP with a metal cover. LCN asks for RH or LH only; if our door handing chart puts your door at LHR or RHR, tell us the door hand and the mounting.
- Top rail, reveal and stop. For a 4040XP pull side mount the catalog allows a reveal of up to 3/4 inch with a regular or hold open arm and requires the 4040XP-18 plate on a top rail under 3-3/4 inches. For parallel arm mounting on a narrow top rail the plate is the 4040XP-18PA. Other series have their own figures.
- Opening. The catalogs recommend an auxiliary stop at the hold open point or where the door cannot swing to the closer's maximum opening, and for a 4040XP parallel arm mount wherever no Cush-n-Stop arm is used; see our door stops and holders guide.
- Opening force. LCN cautions that a manual closer adjusted for ADA or other reduced opening force requirements may lack the power to close and latch the door reliably, and points to automatic operators, covered in our automatic door operator guide.
