Von Duprin Exit Device Trim: 996L Lever, 990NL Pull, 388 Trim, R/V vs M and Handing

The outside lever on a Von Duprin exit device is worn out, or the door now needs a key on the outside instead of a dummy pull. The new trim has to suit the series and type of the device already on the door and give the function you want from the outside. Read those on the device first, and the trim number will make sense.

Start with the device on the door

In Von Duprin's price book, 98 is the smooth device and 99 the grooved one. In the 33A/35A Series it is the other way round: 33A is grooved, 35A smooth. The number after the series gives the device type, for example none for a rim device, 27 for surface vertical rod, 47 or 48 for concealed vertical rod and 75 for a mortise device (see our exit device types guide).

The letters that follow are the function, and the price book prints the trim each device comes with. A 99L rim device ships with 996L-R/V lever trim. A 9875NL mortise device ships with 990NL-M. The 33A/35A Series has its own trims, covered below, and the 22 Series uses 210 and 230 trims.

Von Duprin 98/99 trim functions: 990 pulls and 996L levers

The table is a selection: functions as the 98/99 catalog describes them, and the trim the price book lists for a 98 or 99 rim device. Knob, turn lever and some other functions are left out.

The 990 pull trims sit on a 3 by 14-3/16 inch escutcheon plate, with 5-1/2 inch pull centers. The 996 trim carries a lever (996L) or a knob (996K) on a 2-3/4 by 10-3/4 inch plate. The price book also lists 696 and 697 trims as optional. The 996L-DT is the lever version of dummy trim. Dogging, which dummy trim relies on, is covered in our Von Duprin strikes and dogging guide.

R/V vs M in a Von Duprin trim number

For the 996, 990, 696 and 697 trims, Von Duprin's 98/99 catalog asks for R/V when the trim goes on a rim or vertical device (rod or cable) and M when it goes on a mortise device, for example 996L-R/V or 996L-M. The catalog lists a rim cylinder for the 996L, 996L-NL and 990NL on rim and vertical devices, and a 1-1/4 inch mortise cylinder on a mortise device.

Not every trim comes in both. The price book lists the 996L-KC for R/V only, and the 990DT and 990EO carry no device type at all. An M in front of the number means something else: M996 is Von Duprin's motor driven electric unlocking trim, offered with the L and L-BE functions only. For a mortise device the M goes at the end, as in a 996L-M with the 17 lever or a 990NL-M.

Trims have door templates of their own. In Von Duprin's 98/99 trims template index for hollow metal doors, the R/V and M versions of the 996L and 990NL have separate templates, while the 996L-NL uses one for both. The motorized M996L shares the 996L numbers.

Lever design numbers and handing

In a number such as 996L-NL-06, the 06 is the lever design. The price book furnishes the 06 lever as standard and lists 01, 02, 03, 05, 07, 12, 16, 17 and 18 as optional, along with named designs such as Accent, Asti, Latitude and Merano.

Handing depends on the design. According to the price book, the levers are field reversible and furnished RHR when no hand is given, except 12, Asti, Merano, Accent and some M collection designs, which must be ordered RHR or LHR. The 06, 03 and 17 are not among those exceptions. The catalog gives no handing for the 990 pull trims.

Our item names put these pieces in a row. In 996L-NL-06-R/V 26D LHR, 996L-NL is the lever night latch trim, 06 the lever, R/V the device type, 26D the finish (US26D) and LHR the hand. Some of our item names use another order, such as 996L-RV-626-03-RHR for the 03 lever. RHR and LHR are right hand reverse and left hand reverse; our door handing chart shows how to tell them apart.

Finish codes on Von Duprin trim

The price book lists trim finishes by BHMA number with the older US code beside it: 626 satin chrome (US26D), 613 oil-rubbed satin bronze (US10B), 605 bright brass (US3) and 630 satin stainless (US32D). That is why one of our item names can show both 26D and 626.

Two notes help with matching. The price book says devices ordered in 628 or 630 come with 626 trim unless stainless steel levers are specified, and a 630 stainless steel lever comes with a 619 trim plate. More finish codes are in our door hardware finish codes chart.

33A/35A trim: 386NL, 388 and 360L

For a 33A or 35A device the price book lists 386DT dummy trim, 386NL night latch trim and the 388 night latch cylinder trim as standard, plus the 360L lever control (key unlocks) for 33A/35A rim, 27A and 47A devices. The 386NL is handed and not field reversible, so RHR or LHR has to be specified.

The 388 is the trim a 33A/35A NL-OP device (night latch, optional pull) comes with. Von Duprin's 33A/35A template index calls it the 388NL cylinder control, template 40079, and lists pulls for it, such as the 392-6, with templates of their own. The price book adds a 550DT dummy trim that is available only with the 388, on rim devices.

Full item numbers look like 388NL 26D, 386NL-626-RHR and 360L-06 26D RHR.
