Preparing a door for a Von Duprin 98 or 99 exit device takes the installation instructions and door template for that exact device. Von Duprin publishes them separately for each device type. Below we link the official PDFs for the 98/99 rim, 9827/9927 surface vertical rod (SVR), 9847/9947 concealed vertical rod (CVR) and 9875/9975 mortise devices, explain what each one contains and show how to find the right one from the device number.
The four device types are explained in our exit device types guide, and the Chexit wiring manual has its own page: Von Duprin Chexit CX98/99 manual.

The table links PDFs on Allegion's website (us.allegion.com). The table shows the main rows for hollow metal doors, plus W10054 for the wood door (WDC) device; wood door templates start with W.

How to find the right Von Duprin 98/99 template
The one-page Von Duprin template indexes sort the templates by device, door and function: the 98/99 template index for hollow metal doors and the 98/99 template index for wood doors.
- Device: the device number picks the section. Each section lists the versions that share its templates, for example 9827, 9927, 9827-F and 9927-F.
- Function: the letters after the device number pick the row. In Von Duprin's 98/99 catalog EO is exit only, DT dummy trim, NL night latch, TP thumbpiece, K knob, L lever (classroom) and TL turn lever.
- Version: double cylinder (-2, -2SI), LBR and LBR-F versions have their own rows. All LBR (less bottom rod) versions of the 9827/9927 use 10317 or 10318 instead of 10303 or 10304.
- Wood doors: some rows have an asterisk instead of a template number, meaning no door manufacturing prep is required, for example EO and DT rim devices, and the EL, LX, RX and SS options add hinge stile wire routing templates, such as W40084 for a rim device on a single door.
Example: a 9927EO on a hollow metal door uses 911375-00 and template 10303; a 9875L uses 911374-00 and device template 10305 (W10305 on a wood door), plus a lever trim template from the trims index.
98/99 rim exit device instructions (911373-00)
The rim instructions cover the 98/99, 98/99-F, CD98/99 (cylinder dogging), QEL98/99 (electric latch retraction), HH98/99 and HW98/99 devices. They include a screw chart, the 16 installation steps, the 499F strike installation and a page on the CD option.
Template 10300 tabulates the minimum stile width by strike (single doors) or Von Duprin mullion (double doors) for 990/991/992 and 696/697 trim, for example 4-1/2 and 4-3/8 inches with the 299 strike on a single door. It places the device centerline 39-13/16 inches above the finished floor for a single door opening and 39-11/16 inches for a double door opening with a Von Duprin mullion.
9827/9927 surface vertical rod instructions (911375-00)
The SVR instructions cover the 98/9927, 98/9927-F, CD, QEL, HH and HW versions. They say the rods are factory sized for a 7 ft (84 inch) door and must be cut for shorter doors. They also list standard door heights of 8 ft with a 1 ft rod extension and 10 ft with a 3 ft extension.
Template 10303 lists a 3-11/16 inch minimum stile and 2-3/16 inch backset for a single door or two vertical rod devices, and a 2-3/4 inch backset when the vertical rod device is paired with a mortise device. It recommends a door undercut of 1/4 inch from the finished floor (marked "panic & fire") or 1/8 inch from the threshold (marked "panic only").
9847/9947 concealed vertical rod instructions (911376-00 and 911377-00)
For metal doors, 911376-00 covers the 98/9947/48, -F, CD, QEL, HH and HW versions. It includes a door preparation chart, the device installation steps and a frame preparation chart. Template 10320 lists a 3-11/16 inch minimum stile for a single door or two vertical rod devices. Its 385-A or 304-L strike detail notes a required 1/4 inch undercut for the 9947 and 3/4 inch for the 9948; its threshold detail shows 1/8 inch.
The wood door WDC devices have their own document, 911377-00, covering the 98/9947WDC, -F, CD and EL versions. After the installation steps come the door preparation chart, door routing instructions and frame preparation.
Von Duprin 9875 and 9975 mortise instructions (911374-00)
The current mortise instructions open with a cover page linking an interactive version, followed by the screw chart, the 15 installation steps and the 576A or 576B strike. Step 8 refers to the separate 7500 mortise lock instruction #941019. The strikes shown are the 575 (single door), 575-2 (double door) and 576A or 576B (for 1-3/4 or 2-1/4 inch doors).
Template 10305 prints a 4-3/4 inch minimum stile, a 2-3/4 inch backset from the center of the door edge and 39-5/8 inches from the device centerline to the finished floor. Its notes say the SS7500 lock must be used for LX98/9975 devices.
The file we host, Von Duprin 98/9975 mortise exit device installation instructions (PDF, 9 pages), is an older fax version of document 911374. It covers the 98/9975, -F, CD, EL and 98/9975-2 (double cylinder) devices and the same strikes.
Notes printed on the device templates
- The templates refer to master sheet #10001 for suggested reinforcing.
- LHR application shown, RHR opposite. Hand codes are explained in our door handing chart.
- When outside trim preparation is required, the templates point to a separate trim template or direction sheet; trim templates are listed in the 98/99 trims, controls and strikes index for hollow metal doors or wood doors.
