How to Read Norton Door Closer Model Numbers: 7500, 8501, 1600 and 9300BC

The Norton closer on the door has worn out, or only its arm is bent, and all you have is the number from the old closer or the last order: 7500H, CLP8501 or 1604BCH 689. That number carries the series, the arm, the spring size and the options. Norton Rixson's current surface closers catalog explains each part.

Norton surface closer series in the current catalog

The catalog lists twelve surface closer series, from the 2800ST cam action closer to the cast iron 9500, 9540 and 410.

SeriesCatalog nameSpring size
7500Institutional1 to 6
8000 (8301, 8501)Architectural1 to 6
1600 (1601)Aluminum storefront1 to 6
1600BC (1603BC, 1604BC)Aluminum storefront3 or 4 only
9500Cast iron1 to 6

Spring power adjusts on all but the 1600BC. The catalog calls the 7500 ideal for government, healthcare and educational facilities, the 8000 suited to moderate to high traffic architectural openings, the 1600 an ANSI/BHMA Grade 1 closer for medium traffic commercial use, and the 9500 a cast iron closer for high use openings.

Norton 9300 series door closer instructions

The 9300BC is not in the catalog. Norton Rixson discontinued it in March 2023, and its discontinuance notice names the 1600 Series as its replacement. The notice lists models such as 9303BC, 9304BC and their P and H versions, in spring size 3 or 4. Its non hold open and hold open installation instructions and a top jamb template for the 9388 drop plate are still on the 9300BC page under Discontinued Products at nortonrixson.com.

How to read a Norton closer model number

The catalog's How to Order pages split the number into boxes:

  • JL7500H: prefix JL, series 75, an option digit (0 is the standard arm), a size digit (0 means adjustable 1-6) and the suffix H for a hold open arm.
  • CLP8501T: prefix CLP, series 8, a cover digit (1 without cover, 3 Slim Line cover, 5 full cover), 0 for standard arms, 1 for adjustable 1-6 and T for thumbturn hold open. An 8301 has the slim cover, an 8501 the full cover.
  • J1603BCH 689: prefix J, series 16, 0 for the standard arm (8 is the low profile arm), size 1 for adjustable 1-6 or 3BC and 4BC for ANSI sizes 3 and 4, suffix H, finish 689.

A 7500HM 606 is a 7500 with a hold open arm, a metal cover and finish 606. A UNI7500 33-41 has the Unitrol arm, which Norton orders by door width, here 33 to 41 inches. On the 1600, a P after the number (1601P) is the molded plastic cover, while a P in front marks parallel arm units such as P1601 and P1681.

Norton arm codes: tri-pack, top jamb, parallel and heavy-duty arms

With no prefix, the 7500, 8000, 1600 and 9500 come in what Norton calls Tri-Style packaging: one tri-packed closer for regular arm, top jamb or parallel arm mounting. The table is a selection; codes vary by series.

CodeMeaning in the catalog
S, JS, PRegular, top jamb or parallel arm only, non hold open (7500, 8000)
J, JLTop jamb, 2-3/4 to 7 inch reveal; on the 7500 J swings 150 degrees, JL 180
PR, PROParallel rigid arm; PRO adds an offset soffit plate
CLP, CPSCloserPlus and CloserPlus Spring arms, parallel only
UNI, UNIJUnitrol arm, parallel (give door width) or top jamb (give frame reveal)
CACushion stop arm, regular arm only (1600)
H, M, DA (suffixes)Hold open arm, metal cover, delayed action

The catalog lists these four series as non-handed, yet some codes still call for the hand. With a PR arm in hold open the catalog asks for it, and on the 7500 and 8000 a metal cover for a top jamb closer is handed. Our door handing chart shows how to name the hand.

Replacing only the arm or the closer body

A selection of complete arm assemblies from the catalog:

Top jamb (J)7701-1A7701-1A
Parallel (P)7701-57701-6
Hold open7701-3 or 7701-87701-3 or 7701-8
Tri-pack arm7701-257701-26

The tri-pack arm is the 7701-1 plus a 1618 plate for the 7500, or a 1618A plate for the 8000 and 1600. The 7701-8 hold open arm is the 7701-3 plus a 1628H soffit adapter plate; the 1600 table marks the pair Reg./Par. For a top jamb hold open arm, the 8000 and 1600 tables list the 7701-3A. When the body itself has failed, the parts pages list the closer body alone as LAP, less all parts: 7500LAP, 8101LAP (one body for the 8101, 8301 and 8501), 1601LAP or a sized 1600BC body.

Norton finish codes

The finish comes last. Norton's painted finishes include 689 aluminum, 690 dark bronze, 693 black, 694 medium bronze and 696 gold; BSP and WSP are black and white suede powder coats. In the 7500 and 8000 notes, closer bodies and plastic covers come in waterborne acrylic finishes, while arms and metal covers come in powder coat or plated finishes. Order by the number, not the US code: Norton's tables print US10 next to both 612 and 691, and US4 next to both 606 and 696. Our finish codes chart explains the BHMA numbers.

Where to find Norton installation instructions and templates

The 7500, 8000 and 1600 pages on nortonrixson.com each have a Documentation tab with a template and instruction guide for the series:

Each guide sorts the templates by where the closer goes: pull side on the door (regular arm), push side on the frame (top jamb), push side on the door (parallel arm), plus slide tracks in the 7500 and 8000 guides, then names the installation instruction for each arm. For tri-packed closers one instruction covers all three mountings, with another for hold open arms. The catalog also recommends an auxiliary wall, floor or overhead stop and requires one in abusive applications; see our door stops and holders guide.

Before you order, note the full number with its finish, the mounting and, for a Unitrol arm, the door width or frame reveal. For comparison, see our LCN door closer guide and the door closer types guide. Browse our Norton Closers brand page, or the Surface Door Closers and Closer Arms, Brackets and Parts categories.
