A maglock has stopped holding, or a new opening needs one, and the order has to name the right Securitron Magnalock. Three things decide it: holding force and current, the letters that add sensors, and the bracket or plate under the magnet.
Securitron Magnalock models: holding force and current
The catalog sheets on Securitron's electromagnetic locks pages print:
| Model | Holding force | Current, 12 / 24 VDC |
|---|---|---|
| M32 | 600 lbs | 300 / 150 mA |
| M34R | 500 lbs | 320 / 170 mA |
| M62 | 1,200 lbs | 250 / 150 mA |
| M82 | 1,800 lbs | 350 / 200 mA |
| M680E | 1,200 lbs | 520 / 360 mA max. |
All five sense 12 or 24 VDC on their own. The catalog lists the M32, M34R, M62 and M82 for indoor or outdoor use, the M680E for indoor use only.
According to the FAQ, the M32B, M62B and M82B replaced the SC versions, and the M680EBD and M680EBDX replaced the M680BD family. For the M680E it warns that wiring may differ and asks for all of its own hardware.
Which Magnalock fits the door
Securitron's maglock FAQ has a rule of thumb by door type. Its rows for these models:
- Storefront aluminum over glass, or an office door at low to medium security: M32 or M34 series.
- Sliding door: M34R, the recessed version.
- Steel door such as a warehouse exit, or an office door at medium to high security: M62.
- Very high security, such as a detention center door: M82.
Other rows point concealed installations, Herculite and bi-swing doors to the SAM series, gates to the M62FG and detention holding areas to dual M62 or M82.
The M32, M62 and M82B are made for swinging doors and normally mount to the stop. On an in-swinging door the FAQ calls for the F option with a Z bracket, or a TJ top jamb kit on the M38 and M68. The M380E and M680E are for outswing doors only. For a pair of doors it names two separate locks, two magnets in one housing such as the DM62, or one lock with a split strike where there is no center mullion, which leaves each leaf slightly less than half the rated holding force.
Option letters in a Magnalock part number
The M32, M62 and M82 How to Order charts build the number from model, mounting, monitoring and strike. An M62FGBD is an M62, face drilled, with gate conduit, BondSTAT and a door position switch.
- F: face drilled, mounts to the face of the header. No Z bracket is included.
- G: gate conduit (M62 and M82).
- B: BondSTAT, a bond sensor that reports lock status through an SPDT dry contact rated 30 VDC, 1 A maximum.
- D: door position switch, an SPDT reed switch rated 30 VDC, 125 mA maximum.
- SS, OS, SASM: split strike, offset strike (M62 and M82), shock absorbing strike mount.
- X: passive infrared request to exit, M680E only. Its chart adds BD or no monitoring and a finish code such as 628.
On the M32 chart, D and BD are not available with the split strike, and the M82 chart lists only B or BD (the FAQ writes M82B). The manual counts two wires for a standard lock, five for B or D and eight for BD.
Brackets and stop filler plates
Securitron's mounting accessories brochure (PDF) starts with the door stop. The M32, M38, M68, M380E, M680E and DEM680E fit in 2-1/4 inches of flat mounting space, the M62, DM62 and M82 in 2-1/2 inches. A stop under 2-1/2 inches may need one or more of the first five; the last two are for in-swing doors.
| Part | Use in the brochure |
|---|---|
| SFP stop filler plate | Fills or extends the stop, steel and wood frames |
| ASB spacer bracket | Aluminum doors, lowers the lock below a blade stop |
| CWB concrete wood bracket | Concrete filled metal and wood frames |
| UHB header bracket | Extends the header 1 to 1-1/2 in |
| HEB extension bracket | 90 degree angle for narrow headers |
| ZA Z bracket | In-swing doors, M32, M62, M82 with F |
| TJ top jamb bracket | In-swing doors, M38 and M68 |
The SFP is 1/4, 3/8, 1/2 or 5/8 inch thick and 1-1/4 inches wide. The brochure offers the ASB and CWB for the M32, M62 and M82; the M680E catalog page names its own ASB-680, CWB-680 and GDHB-680. The ZA adjusts from 2-1/4 to 3-1/2 inches off the door or header.
The universal SFP and the UHB come 8 or 12 inches long. The brochure asks you to verify the lock length before ordering; the manual lists 8 inches for the M32 and M62 and 12 inches for the M82. Securitron's FAQ says there is no filler plate for the M380E and M680E, since their bracket already drops the magnet 1/2 inch, yet the SFP product page lists both locks. Ask us before ordering one.
The FAQ lists replacement strike plates APS-32, APS-62 and APS-82, with a D suffix for D models, and sex bolt SB-1.
Power: DC, sized for every device
The FAQ says the M32, M62 and M82B are not compatible with AC and need a DC power supply or rectified AC. Their installation manual (PDF) asks for full-wave rectified DC, with the output isolated from earth ground. The M680E instructions are stricter: rectified and filtered 12 to 24 VDC, with AC, half wave and full wave power ruled out, and a supply sized for the maximum draw. Its request to exit models need two separate 12 or 24 VDC pairs, with processor power provided continuously.
The manual sizes the wire by total current of all devices and distance, with tables on page 7. It adds that Securitron power supplies have terminals for emergency release switches.
Securitron's own supplies include the AQD, AQL and AQS series. For other makers, see our Altronix manuals guide; for what a lock does when power drops, see fail safe vs fail secure. For power to hardware inside the door, see our Securitron EPT guide.
Securitron's M680E instructions say the lock must be installed according to all applicable building and life safety codes, so confirm a maglock on an egress door with your local code authority.
