An electric power transfer carries the wires for an electrified lock or exit device from the frame to the door on the hinge side. This page links the Securitron EPT templates we host and summarizes what they and related manufacturer documents print about door preparation, wires and ratings.

Each template is a single 17 x 11 inch page, in inches with millimeters in brackets, and carries the note "Do not photocopy this template!!! (Scale may be affected)". According to Securitron's instructions, the installation template and the instructions come with the product.
EPT or EPTL: the swing gap decides
Securitron's EPT/EPTL instructions (PN 500-14250, Rev. G) choose the model by the swing gap distance between the door edge and the frame: the EPT is used for 2-1/2 inches or less, the EPTL for more than 2-1/2 inches. Figure 1 on page 2 shows where the distance is measured. The EPT-SC is designed for doors on swing clear hinges.
What the Securitron EPT template shows
Template 500-20260-C prints each dimension for both models, as "EPT: ... -OR- EPTL: ...". Key dimensions in inches:
| Printed dimension | EPT | EPTL |
|---|---|---|
| Overall length, end to end | 12.77 | 21.43 |
| Mounting screw holes | 11.77 | 20.43 |
| Flush mount bracket holes (metal) | 13.27 | 21.93 |
| Door cable hole to frame cable hole | 7.80 | 16.30 |
The pocket is 1.00 inch wide, with a 3/4 inch cable hole in the door and an 11/16 inch hole in the frame for the flexible shield and bezel. Separate notes cover wood and metal doors, and the centerlines on door and frame must align with the door closed.
The EPT-SC template (500-20265-A) prints the same 12.77, 11.77 and 13.27 inch dimensions and, in its reference view, 7.87 inches between the cable holes. The EPT-SC instructions (PN 500-14220, Rev. C) say it will not work on doors with center pivot type hinges.
Wires, current and voltage, as printed
| Unit | Wires | Rating |
|---|---|---|
| Securitron EPT, EPTL, EPT-SC | Up to 12 conductors, 20-22 AWG | 1 A at 12 V or 24 V, AC or DC |
| Securitron CEPT-10 | 2 x 18 AWG, 8 x 22 AWG | Max. 5 A (18 AWG), 1 A (22 AWG) per wire |
| Securitron EL-CEPT | 12 x 22 AWG | Max. 1 A per wire |
| ABH PT1000 (sell sheet) | 10 x 24 AWG | 24 VDC, 1 A max. |
Securitron's instructions set the 12-conductor limit "to maintain this product's compliance with UL listings (UL 10C and UBC 7-2-1997)". The Von Duprin price book describes the EPT 2 as two 18 gauge wires and the EPT 10 as ten 24 gauge wires.
Which hinges and pivots the documents name
- Securitron EPT and EPTL: full mortise butt hinges, continuous butt hinges or offset pivots with up to 3/4 inch offset; not compatible with swing clear hinges or center pivot doors.
- Securitron CEPT: will not operate properly with offset pivots, pocket pivots, center hung doors, butt hinges over 6 inches, swing clear hinges or balanced doors; the door should be 1-3/4 inches thick minimum.
- ABH PT1000: not for swing clear hinges, pocket pivots, butt hinges larger than 6 inches, 1-1/2 inch offset pivots or center hung doors.
- McKinney EPT: according to the McKinney cut sheet, it will work on most doors hung using butt hinges, continuous hinges or pivots and will not function on a center pivot door.
Concealed power transfer, electric hinge or door cord
McKinney describes its EPT as installing in the door and frame edges and protecting the cable within a flexible steel shield; Securitron says its CEPT is totally concealed when the door is fully closed. Other ways to bring the wires to the door:
- Electric hinge: McKinney describes its ElectroLynx Quick Connect (QC) hinges as connecting power from the source through the hinge to the electrified hardware, with plug connectors that eliminate the need for separate or exposed wiring.
- Door cord or power transfer loop: an armored cable for running wires from the frame to the door. McKinney's door cord is an 18 or 36 inch armored stainless steel cable with plastic end pieces; Security Door Controls recommends its surface mount loops for hollow metal and aluminum frames.
Von Duprin's Chexit manual marks a power transfer as highly recommended and calls for a door loop or an electric hinge if one is not used (see our Chexit manual guide). Which method suits an opening depends on the door and frame preparation, the number and gauge of wires, the current and how the door moves.
How our product names read
- ABH PT1000US28: model PT1000, finish US28. ABH's sell sheet also lists an Easy Connect option, suffix EZ.
- Von Duprin EPT10-689: model EPT 10, finish 689. The price book lists the EPT 2 and EPT 10 in finishes 622, 689 and 695, with a connector option, CON, for the EPT 10.
- Securitron: in Securitron's documents the EL prefix (EL-EPT, EL-EPTL, EL-EPT-SC, EL-CEPT) marks the ElectroLynx version with plug-in connectors; the EPT/EPTL instructions describe it as pre-harnessed on both ends.
- McKinney TA2714 4X4 26D QC4: hinge model TA2714, size 4 x 4, finish 26D and the QC (Quick Connect) option; the product description lists a 4-wire ElectroLynx connector.
Where to find the installation steps
- EPT and EPTL: section 3, Physical Installation, of PN 500-14250 (wood and metal doors on page 2, ElectroLynx version on pages 3-4).
- EPT-SC: section 4 of PN 500-14220, pages 1-4.
- CEPT: pages 3-4 of PN 500-22115 for factory prepped doors and frames; for others, the installation diagram on page 5, marked "This drawing is not to scale!"
Securitron's EPT/EPTL instructions note that door stiles and hinge spacing may vary depending on the door manufacturer, and advise consulting the door manufacturer to decide whether the unit fits.
