A lever that wobbles, a knob that has to come off for re-keying, a spare key to cut, a door thicker than the set was made for: on an Emtek set, each of these points to a small part or tool. Which one depends on how the set is built, and Emtek's current instructions show it.
Identify the Emtek set first
Start with the set's Emtek item number, from the original order if you have it. Our guide to Emtek item numbers shows how to read it. Then check three things that change the part:
- Type of set. Passage and privacy sets and key in knob or lever locks have separate guides.
- Rosette. The Providence Key in Knob, for example, is offered with a #8, Regular, Rectangular or Rope rosette, and the #8 style rosette has a guide of its own.
- Backset and door thickness. On Emtek's Providence Key in Knob and Regular Keyed Deadbolt pages, the standard latch is for a 2-3/8 inch backset and a 2-3/4 inch backset has to be specified when needed. Our Schlage and Emtek door prep guide explains both measurements.
Emtek spanner wrench: which rosettes use one
Four of Emtek's current installation guides show the inside rosette fastened in different ways, and two of those sets come with a wrench for the job:
| Set | Rosette held by | Tool named |
|---|---|---|
| Passage, privacy | Two #8 machine screws | Not named |
| CF 2.0 passage, privacy | Ring fastener | Ring fastener wrench |
| Key in knob, lever | Rosette threaded on the stem | Not named |
| Key in, #8 rosette | Rosette nut | Spanner wrench |
Both wrenches come in the box with the set. CF is Emtek's Concealed Fastener option for passage and privacy sets, which its FAQ describes as having no visible screws on the interior rosette. If the wrench is lost, the Emtek wrench we list on its own is MS4-RINGWRENCH, a spanner wrench tool. That listing does not say which rosettes it fits, so send us your set's item number before you order.
Set screws, hex wrenches and privacy pins
Emtek's FAQ and installation guides tie the set screw on a knob or lever to these jobs:
- Wobbling knob or lever: in the tubular entry set section of its FAQ, Emtek says to tighten the set screw on the stem. That screw does not hold the knob or lever onto the trim plate; it tightens it onto the spindle.
- CF 2.0: each knob or lever has a pre-installed set screw, and the box holds a 3/32 inch hex torque wrench for it.
- Key in knob and lever: the inside knob or lever comes off once its set screw is loosened with the hex wrench provided.
The privacy pin engages privacy from the inside. In an emergency the lock is opened through a hole in the exterior rosette, and the passage and privacy guide names the Emergency Release tool for it. Emtek's FAQ says it offers replacement parts including latch mechanisms, strike plates and screws.
Emtek torsion springs and lever springs
Springs call for more care. In the tubular entry set section of its FAQ, Emtek says the knob or lever is spring-loaded to the plate and held on with washers and e-clips or snap rings, and it advises against removing the knob or lever, since doing so may result in denial of warranty. The same FAQ says all Emtek multipoint trims are spring loaded.
Our catalog lists Emtek spring parts such as SG4-SPRINGLEVER, a torsion spring, and SG4-MPLVSPRING, a multi-point lever spring assembly. Neither listing names the sets it fits. Before you take any trim apart, send us the item number of the set and a photo.
Emtek key blanks, keyway and cylinders
Emtek's Providence Key in Knob and Regular Keyed Deadbolt pages also list the Schlage C keyway in their technical specifications. Our listing for the MS4-KEYBLKC Emtek key blank describes a 5 pin blank in that keyway. A blank has to match both the keyway and the pin count of the cylinder; our key blank chart has the Schlage numbers and Ilco equivalents.
The key in knob and lever guides include an optional re-pinning section that shows how the knob or lever slides off its stem. For a new cylinder, we list Emtek Schlage C cylinders for keyed knobs and levers and for deadbolts, each for the finishes named in its title.
Spindles, tailpieces and thicker doors
In Emtek's passage and privacy specifications, the spindle, screws, strike and privacy pin change with door thickness. For the brass classic passage and privacy knobsets (Egg, Melon, Norwich, Providence and Waverly) the sheet lists:
| Door, inches | Inside half spindle | Rosette screws |
|---|---|---|
| 1-1/4 to 2 | Standard | 1-1/2 |
| 2 to 2-1/2 | Long | 2 |
| 2-1/2 to 3 | Extra long | 2-1/2 |
Both thicker ranges also call for an extended full-lip strike plate and, on privacy sets, a privacy pin with extension. Other lines, such as stainless steel, use other ranges. If your set is already on the door and needs one of these parts, send us its item number and the door thickness.
- Key in knob and key in lever locks: Emtek's sheets give a standard door thickness of 1-1/4 to 2-1/16 inches, extended up to 2-3/4. They ask for the door thickness with the order, and on most of them the extension kit is not available separately.
- Deadbolts: Emtek's FAQ lists extension kits for doors up to 3-3/8 inches and notes that single cylinder tailpieces have breakaway marks and can snap when the bolt drags too much. Emtek's tubular entry set answers describe a single cylinder tailpiece as long, flat and narrow and a double cylinder one as forked and shorter; neither replaces the other. Our catalog lists MC4-SGLTAIL240B, an extra long tailpiece for single cylinder deadbolts.
- Entry set thumb press: the outside thumb press spindle on most handle sets has a reach of up to 2 inches; for a longer one, Emtek says to re-order the handle set built for your door thickness.
Where Emtek publishes installation instructions
Emtek's product pages link the documents published for each design. The Technical Specifications and Installation Guides page in Emtek's Support menu links to Emtek's document library and asks you to contact Emtek customer service if a guide is missing.

Our Emtek brand page lists the Emtek items we carry. Small service parts such as privacy pins, deadlatches and the spanner wrench sit under lock parts and components.
