The door is on the bench and the Sargent lock is on order. Before anyone cuts a mortise or bores a hole, you need the right template, and Sargent splits the door prep into separate sheets for the lock, the trim, the strike and the electrified versions. Here is which sheet goes with an 8200 mortise lock and which with a 114 or 115 hospital latch.
Where Sargent publishes templates and installation instructions
On sargentlock.com the documents sit in the Technical Documents tab of the product page. On the 8200 Series page that tab is divided into Template And Instruction Guide, Templates, Installation Instructions and Parts Manuals.
For the 8200, start with the Mortise Lock Template and Installation Instruction Guide (91065). It indexes the templates and installation instructions of each Sargent mortise series by document number, with notes on when they apply.
Sargent 8200 mortise lock template: 7057
Template 7057 covers the 7800, 8200 and 9200 Series locks, and the guide marks it as needed for every 8200 unless the lock has behavioral health trim. The single sheet shows:
- a table of eight holes in four sizes (1-1/8, 1-1/4, 5/8 and 1/4 inch) and which of them the listed functions need, with a note to check the table before cutting a hole
- the inside and outside faces of the door, with the 2-3/4 inch backset measured from the centerline of the bevel
- a suggested door cut for a wood door and for a metal door
- a table of variable dimensions A, B and C, with separate rows for the 1- and 74- prefixes and for the electrified and monitoring versions
Its notes ask for suitable reinforcement in metal doors and set the minimum stile at 4-1/2 inch for mechanical functions and 4-3/4 inch for electrified ones. Our lock functions guide explains the function codes, and our Sargent model numbers guide decodes a full 8200 order number.
Trim and strike templates for the 8200
The holes for the rose or escutcheon come from a separate trim template. A selection from the guide's 8200 tables:
| Trim or version | Template |
|---|---|
| Roses such as L, LN and O | 7058 |
| Exposed screw escutcheons, such as LE1, LW1 | 7052 |
| LS and KS security escutcheons | 7054 |
| WT escutcheon, surface applied | 7055 |
| Dummy trim, functions 93 and 94 | 4298 |
| BHW behavioral health trim | 4711 |
| BHL and ALP trim | 4745 |
| KP keypad locks, 8276 to 8279 | 4514 |
For the strike, both 7057 and the electrified template point to 7063, the curved or straight lip strike template. The guide prints 7064 in its curved and straight lip strike row, but the 8200 page titles 7064 as the template for the 78-0034 deadbolt strike, so go by the title printed on the sheet.
Electrified 8200: template 7065 and wiring instructions A7722
For functions 70 to 73, the 56-, RX-, LX- and DX- prefixes and NAC- versions 270, 271, 274, 275, 280 and 281, the guide lists template 7065, typically paired with 7057, which still gives the function holes. Sheet 1 covers the metal door and sheet 2 the wood door, each with a 3/8 inch raceway to the power transfer device; the wood door sheet adds a pocket behind the mortise for the QC connectors.
A7772 is the standard installation sheet for all 8200 functions, electrified ones included. A7722 adds the wiring for functions 70 to 73 and the RX-, LX- and DX- monitoring prefixes. It lists 70 and 72 as fail safe and 71 and 73 as fail secure, and says the DIP switches at the bottom of the lock body must be set before installation. For MELR locks (56-) with standard levers, A8385 adds the lock body installation and wiring.
Handing an 8200 mortise lock
The 8200 page lists the lock as field reversible. Section 9 of A7772 describes the change: the locking piece turns so its red surface faces the locked side, and the latchbolt turns 180 degrees so its bevel faces the strike. Functions 04, 06, 13, 17 and 31 need extra steps there. Door hands are determined from the outside, as our door handing chart shows. The exception is function 8242, which the 8200 page lists as handed, to be specified on the order, and not field reversible.
Sargent 115 hospital latch template: 4154
Sargent's Healthcare Hardware catalog presents the 114 and the 115 as hospital latches. The 114/115 page calls the series a tubular lock for the passage function only, and the template titles call each model a hospital push-pull latch. On the 115 the push paddle mounts up and the pull paddle down; on the 114 both mount down. Each has its own sheets:
| Latch | Template | Instructions |
|---|---|---|
| 115 | 4154 | A5735 |
| 114 | 4279 | A6380 |
Template 4154 is one sheet for wood or metal doors 1-3/4 to 2-1/4 inch thick. It recommends a 2-1/8 inch through hole and gives a table of backsets: 5 inch for the standard 115, 2-3/4 inch for the 24-115 and 7 inch for the 26-115, each with its own case length. Its notes call for suitable reinforcement by others. A5735 starts with preparing the door to the template, then moves on to the latch case, fire shields, handle units and covers.
Check the strike before you prepare the frame. The 4154 sheet still names strike template 4131 for the regularly furnished strike. Sargent's current Healthcare Hardware catalog says the 808 curved lip strike has been standard since July 2025 and the 28- option is no longer required; the 800 strike is the 29- option. On the 114/115 page the 808 strike has template 4049 and the 800 strike has 4131.
The 115 is handed. The catalog's order line reads options, series, finish and hand, as in P-115 26D RH, where P- stamps PUSH and PULL on each escutcheon. A5735 adds that the handle units are factory assembled for a right or left hand door, so the hand you order must match the door.
Other Sargent push and pull trim
The 8200 with ALP push and pull paddle trim uses template 4745 and instructions A8053, and the catalog says ALP needs a special 8200 lock body, shipped automatically when ALP is specified. The HP Series bored lock with ALP trim, which the catalog also calls a bored hospital latch, has template 4695 and instructions A8054.
